1 Happy is the husband of a good wife; the number of his days will be doubled.1 Beato il marito della donna dabbene, perocché sarà doppio il numero de' suoi giorni.
2 A loyal wife rejoices her husband, and he will complete his years in peace.2 La donna forte è la consolazione del marito, e gli fa passare in pace gli anni di sua vita.
3 A good wife is a great blessing; she will be granted among the blessings of the man who fears the Lord.3 Una donna buona è una buona sorte, ella toccherà a chi teme Dio, e sarà data all'uomo per le sue buone opere:
4 Whether rich or poor, his heart is glad, and at all times his face is cheerful.4 Sia egli ricco, o sia povero, avrà il cuore contento, e la faccia lieta in ogni tempo.
5 Of three things my heart is afraid, and of a fourth I am frightened: The slander of a city, the gathering of a mob, and false accusation--all these are worse than death.5 Di tre cose ha paura il mio cuore, e la quarta fa impallidire il mio volto:
6 There is grief of heart and sorrow when a wife is envious of a rival, and a tongue-lashing makes it known to all.6 La persecuzione di una città; le raunate del popolo;
7 An evil wife is an ox yoke which chafes; taking hold of her is like grasping a scorpion.7 E la calunnia falsa: tutte cose più dolorose della morte.
8 There is great anger when a wife is drunken; she will not hide her shame.8 Ma la donna gelosa è dolore, ed affanno di cuore.
9 A wife's harlotry shows in her lustful eyes, and she is known by her eyelids.9 La donna gelosa ha la sferza nella lingua, e la fa sentire a tutti.
10 Keep strict watch over a headstrong daughter, lest, when she finds liberty, she use it to her hurt.10 La donna cattiva è come il giogo de' bovi, che ondeggia: chi la prende è come chi prende uno scorpione.
11 Be on guard against her impudent eye, and do not wonder if she sins against you.11 La donna, che si imbriaca è gran flagello, e le sue ignominie, e turpitudini non saranno nascoste.
12 As a thirsty wayfarer opens his mouth and drinks from any water near him, so will she sit in front of every post and open her quiver to the arrow.12 La impudicizia della donna si conosce alla sfrontatezza dello sguardo, ed agli occhi di essa.
13 A wife's charm delights her husband, and her skill puts fat on his bones.13 Veglia attentamente sopra la figliuola, la quale non affrena i suoi occhi, affinché, trovata l'opportunità, ella non isfoghi i suoi capricci.
14 A silent wife is a gift of the Lord, and there is nothing so precious as a disciplined soul.14 Sia a te sospetta ogni immodestia de' suoi occhi, e non maravigliarti, se ella non fa conto di te:
15 A modest wife adds charm to charm, and no balance can weigh the value of a chaste soul.15 Ella come un viandante assetato aprirà la bocca alla fontana, e berà dell'acqua più vicina qualunque ella sia, e si metterà a sedere presso ogni angolo, e aprirà il turcasso ad ogni saetta sino a venir meno.
16 Like the sun rising in the heights of the Lord, so is the beauty of a good wife in her well-ordered home.16 La garbatezza della moglie diligente rallegra il marito, e fa vegete le sue ossa.
17 Like the shining lamp on the holy lampstand, so is a beautiful face on a stately figure.17 La morigeratezza di lei è dono di Dio.
18 Like pillars of gold on a base of silver, so are beautiful feet with a steadfast heart.18 La donna giudiziosa, e amante del silenzio, col suo animo ben composto è cosa senza paraggio.
19 At two things my heart is grieved, and because of a third anger comes over me: a warrior in want through poverty, and intelligent men who are treated contemptuously; a man who turns back from righteousness to sin-- the Lord will prepare him for the sword!19 Grazia sopra grazia ell'è una donna santa, e vereconda.
20 A merchant can hardly keep from wrongdoing, and a tradesman will not be declared innocent of sin.20 Né v'ha cosa di tanto valore, che possa agguagliarsi a questa anima casta:
21 Quello, che il sole nascente dall'altissima abitazione di Dio è pel mondo, lo è l'avvenenza della donna virtuosa pell'ornamento di sua casa.
22 Lucerna, che splende sul candelabro santo ell'è l'avvenenza del volto in ferma età.
23 Colonne d'oro sopra basi d'argento, sono i piedi, che posano sulle piante di donna grave.
24 Come eterni sono i fondamenti gettati sopra salda pietra; cosi i comandamenti di Dio sul cuore di donna santa.
25 Due cose contristano il mio cuore, e la terza mi muove ad ira:
26 Un uom guerriero, che languisce di inopia, e il saggio messo in non cale:
27 E l'uomo, il quale dalla giustizia fa passaggio al peccato: Iddio serba costui alla spada.
28 Due professioni ho conosciute per difficili, e pericolose: il negoziante difficilmente fuggirà le omissioni; e l'ostiere non sarà esente da' peccati della lingua.
