Sirach 14

1 Blessed is the man who does not blunder with his lips and need not suffer grief for sin.	1 Beato l’uomo che non ha peccato con la sua bocca e non è tormentato dal rimorso dei peccati.
2 Blessed is he whose heart does not condemn him, and who has not given up his hope.	2 Beato chi non ha nulla da rimproverarsi e chi non ha perduto la sua speranza.
3 Riches are not seemly for a stingy man; and of what use is property to an envious man?	3 A un uomo gretto non va bene la ricchezza, a che cosa servono gli averi a un uomo avaro?
4 Whoever accumulates by depriving himself, accumulates for others; and others will live in luxury on his goods.	4 Chi accumula a forza di privazioni, accumula per altri; con i suoi beni faranno festa gli estranei.
5 If a man is mean to himself, to whom will he be generous? He will not enjoy his own riches.	5 Chi è cattivo con se stesso con chi sarà buono? Certo non godrà delle sue ricchezze.
6 No one is meaner than the man who is grudging to himself, and this is the retribution for his baseness;	6 Nessuno è peggiore di chi danneggia se stesso, e questa è la ricompensa della sua malizia:
7 even if he does good, he does it unintentionally, and betrays his baseness in the end.	7 anche se fa il bene, lo fa per distrazione, e alla fine sarà manifesta la sua malizia.
8 Evil is the man with a grudging eye; he averts his face and disregards people.	8 È malvagio l’uomo dall’occhio invidioso, volge lo sguardo altrove e disprezza la vita altrui.
9 A greedy man's eye is not satisfied with a portion, and mean injustice withers the soul.	9 L’occhio dell’avaro non si accontenta della sua parte, una malvagia ingiustizia gli inaridisce l’anima.
10 A stingy man's eye begrudges bread, and it is lacking at his table.	10 Un occhio cattivo è invidioso anche del pane ed è proprio questo che manca sulla sua tavola.
11 My son, treat yourself well, according to your means, and present worthy offerings to the Lord.	11 Figlio, per quanto ti è possibile, tràttati bene e presenta al Signore le offerte dovute.
12 Remember that death will not delay, and the decree of Hades has not been shown to you.	12 Ricòrdati che la morte non tarderà e il decreto degli inferi non ti è stato rivelato.
13 Do good to a friend before you die, and reach out and give to him as much as you can.	13 Prima di morire fa’ del bene all’amico, secondo le tue possibilità sii generoso con lui.
14 Do not deprive yourself of a happy day; let not your share of desired good pass by you.	14 Non privarti di un giorno felice, non ti sfugga nulla di un legittimo desiderio.
15 Will you not leave the fruit of your labors to another, and what you acquired by toil to be divided by lot?	15 Non lascerai forse a un altro i frutti del tuo lavoro, e le tue fatiche per essere divise fra gli eredi?
16 Give, and take, and beguile yourself, because in Hades one cannot look for luxury.	16 Regala e accetta regali, e divèrtiti, perché negli inferi non si ricerca l’allegria.
17 All living beings become old like a garment, for the decree from of old is, "You must surely die!"	17 Ogni corpo invecchia come un abito, è una legge da sempre: «Devi morire!».
18 Like flourishing leaves on a spreading tree which sheds some and puts forth others, so are the generations of flesh and blood: one dies and another is born.	18 Come foglie verdi su un albero frondoso, alcune cadono e altre germogliano, così sono le generazioni umane: una muore e un’altra nasce.
19 Every product decays and ceases to exist, and the man who made it will pass away with it.	19 Ogni opera corruttibile scompare e chi la compie se ne andrà con essa.
20 Blessed is the man who meditates on wisdom and who reasons intelligently.	20 Beato l’uomo che si dedica alla sapienza e riflette con la sua intelligenza,
21 He who reflects in his mind on her ways will also ponder her secrets.	21 che medita nel cuore le sue vie e con la mente ne penetra i segreti.
22 Pursue wisdom like a hunter, and lie in wait on her paths.	22 La insegue come un cacciatore, si apposta sui suoi sentieri.
23 He who peers through her windows will also listen at her doors;	23 Egli spia alle sue finestre e sta ad ascoltare alla sua porta.
24 he who encamps near her house will also fasten his tent peg to her walls;	24 Sosta vicino alla sua casa e fissa il picchetto nelle sue pareti,
25 he will pitch his tent near her, and will lodge in an excellent lodging place;	25 alza la propria tenda presso di lei e si ripara in un rifugio di benessere,
26 he will place his children under her shelter, and will camp under her boughs	26 mette i propri figli sotto la sua protezione e sotto i suoi rami soggiorna;
27 he will be sheltered by her from the heat, and will dwell in the midst of her glory.	27 da lei è protetto contro il caldo, e nella sua gloria egli abita.
