Sirach 11

1 The wisdom of a humble man will lift up his head, and will seat him among the great.	1 La sapienza dell'umile gli farà tenere alta la testa, gli permetterà di sedere tra i grandi.
2 Do not praise a man for his good looks, nor loathe a man because of his appearance.	2 Non lodare un uomo per la sua bellezza e non detestare un uomo per il suo aspetto.
3 The bee is small among flying creatures, but her product is the best of sweet things.	3 L'ape è piccola tra gli esseri alati, ma il suo prodotto ha il primato fra i dolci sapori.
4 Do not boast about wearing fine clothes, nor exalt yourself in the day that you are honored; for the works of the Lord are wonderful, and his works are concealed from men.	4 Non ti vantare per le vesti che indossi e non insuperbirti nel giorno della gloria, poiché stupende sono le opere del Signore, eppure sono nascoste agli uomini le opere sue.
5 Many kings have had to sit on the ground, but one who was never thought of has worn a crown.	5 Molti sovrani sedettero sulla polvere e uno sconosciuto cinse il loro diadema.
6 Many rulers have been greatly disgraced, and illustrious men have been handed over to others.	6 Molti potenti furono umiliati profondamente; uomini illustri furono consegnati in potere altrui.
7 Do not find fault before you investigate; first consider, and then reprove.	7 Non biasimare prima di avere indagato, prima rifletti e quindi condanna.
8 Do not answer before you have heard, nor interrupt a speaker in the midst of his words.	8 Non rispondere prima di avere ascoltato, in mezzo ai discorsi non intrometterti.
9 Do not argue about a matter which does not concern you, nor sit with sinners when they judge a case.	9 Per una cosa di cui non hai bisogno non litigare, non immischiarti nelle liti dei peccatori.
10 My son, do not busy yourself with many matters; if you multiply activities you will not go unpunished, and if you pursue you will not overtake, and by fleeing you will not escape.	10 Figlio, la tua attività non abbracci troppe cose; se esageri, non sarai esente da colpa; anche se corri, non arriverai e non riuscirai a scampare con la fuga.
11 There is a man who works, and toils, and presses on, but is so much the more in want.	11 C'è chi lavora, fatica e si affanna: eppure resta tanto più indietro.
12 There is another who is slow and needs help, who lacks strength and abounds in poverty; but the eyes of the Lord look upon him for his good; he lifts him out of his low estate	12 C'è chi è debole e ha bisogno di soccorso, chi è privo di beni e ricco di miseria: eppure il Signore lo guarda con benevolenza, lo solleva dalla sua bassezza
13 and raises up his head, so that many are amazed at him.	13 e lo fa stare a testa alta, sì che molti ne sono stupiti.
14 Good things and bad, life and death, poverty and wealth, come from the Lord.	14 Bene e male, vita e morte, povertà e ricchezza, tutto proviene dal Signore.
15 .	15 Sapienza, senno e conoscenza della legge vengono dal Signore; carità e rettitudine sono dono del Signore.
16 .	16 Errore e tenebre sono per gli empi e il male resta per i malvagi.
17 The gift of the Lord endures for those who are godly, and what he approves will have lasting success.	17 Il dono del Signore è assicurato ai pii e il suo favore li rende felici per sempre.
18 There is a man who is rich through his diligence and self-denial, and this is the reward allotted to him:	18 C'è chi è ricco a forza di attenzione e di risparmio; ed ecco la parte della sua ricompensa:
19 when he says, "I have found rest, and now I shall enjoy my goods!" he does not know how much time will pass until he leaves them to others and dies.	19 mentre dice: "Ho trovato riposo; ora mi godrò i miei beni", non sa quanto tempo ancora trascorrerà; lascerà tutto ad altri e morirà.
20 Stand by your covenant and attend to it, and grow old in your work.	20 Sta' fermo al tuo impegno e fanne la tua vita, invecchia compiendo il tuo lavoro.
21 Do not wonder at the works of a sinner, but trust in the Lord and keep at your toil; for it is easy in the sight of the Lord to enrich a poor man quickly and suddenly.	21 Non ammirare le opere del peccatore, confida nel Signore e persevera nella fatica, perché è facile per il Signore arricchire un povero all'improvviso.
22 The blessing of the Lord is the reward of the godly, and quickly God causes his blessing to flourish.	22 La benedizione del Signore è la ricompensa del pio; in un istante Dio farà sbocciare la sua benedizione.
23 Do not say, "What do I need, and what prosperity could be mine in the future?"	23 Non dire: "Di che cosa ho bisogno e di quali beni disporrò d'ora innanzi?".
24 Do not say, "I have enough, and what calamity could happen to me in the future?"	24 Non dire: "Ho quanto mi occorre; che cosa potrà ormai capitarmi di male?".
25 In the day of prosperity, adversity is forgotten, and in the day of adversity, prosperity is not remembered.	25 Nel tempo della prosperità si dimentica la sventura; nel tempo della sventura non si ricorda la prosperità.
26 For it is easy in the sight of the Lord to reward a man on the day of death according to his conduct.	26 È facile per il Signore nel giorno della morte rendere all'uomo secondo la sua condotta.
27 The misery of an hour makes one forget luxury, and at the close of a man's life his deeds will be revealed.	27 L'infelicità di un'ora fa dimenticare il benessere; alla morte di un uomo si rivelano le sue opere.
28 Call no one happy before his death; a man will be known through his children.	28 Prima della fine non chiamare nessuno beato; un uomo si conosce veramente alla fine.
29 Do not bring every man into your home, for many are the wiles of the crafty.	29 Non portare in casa qualsiasi persona, perché sono molte le insidie del fraudolento.
30 Like a decoy partridge in a cage, so is the mind of a proud man, and like a spy he observes your weakness;	30 Una pernice da richiamo in gabbia, tale il cuore del superbo; come una spia egli attende la tua caduta.
31 for he lies in wait, turning good into evil, and to worthy actions he will attach blame.	31 Cambiando il bene in male tende insidie, troverà difetti anche nelle cose migliori.
32 From a spark of fire come many burning coals, and a sinner lies in wait to shed blood.	32 Con una scintilla di fuoco si riempie il braciere, il peccatore sta in agguato per spargere sangue.
33 Beware of a scoundrel, for he devises evil, lest he give you a lasting blemish.	33 Guàrdati dal malvagio, poiché egli il male prepara, che non contamini per sempre anche te.
34 Receive a stranger into your home and he will upset you with commotion, and will estrange you from your family.	34 Ospita un estraneo, ti metterà sottosopra ogni cosa e ti renderà estraneo ai tuoi.
