Proverbs 25

1 These also are proverbs of Solomon which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied.	1 Auch das sind Sprichwörter Salomos, die die Männer Hiskijas, des Königs von Juda, sammelten.
2 It is the glory of God to conceal things, but the glory of kings is to search things out.	2 Gottes Ehre ist es, eine Sache zu verhüllen, des Königs Ehre ist es, eine Sache zu erforschen.
3 As the heavens for height, and the earth for depth, so the mind of kings is unsearchable.	3 Der Himmel so hoch und die Erde so tief und das Herz des Königs: sie sind nicht zu erforschen.
4 Take away the dross from the silver, and the smith has material for a vessel;	4 Scheidet man die Schlacken vom Silber, gelingt dem Feinschmied das Gefäß.
5 take away the wicked from the presence of the king, and his throne will be established in righteousness.	5 Scheidet man den Frevler vom König, erlangt dessen Thron Bestand durch Gerechtigkeit.
6 Do not put yourself forward in the king's presence or stand in the place of the great;	6 Rühme dich nicht vor dem König und stell dich nicht an den Platz der Großen;
7 for it is better to be told, "Come up here," than to be put lower in the presence of the prince. What your eyes have seen	7 denn besser, man sagt zu dir: Rück hier herauf, als dass man dich nach unten setzt wegen eines Vornehmen. Was deine Augen sahen,
8 do not hastily bring into court; for what will you do in the end, when your neighbor puts you to shame?	8 bring es nicht übereilt als Streitfall vor; denn was willst du später tun, wenn dein Nächster dich bloßstellt?
9 Argue your case with your neighbor himself, and do not disclose another's secret;	9 Trag deinen Streit mit deinem Nächsten aus, doch verrate nicht das Geheimnis eines andern,
10 lest he who hears you bring shame upon you, and your ill repute have no end.	10 sonst wird dich schmähen, wer es hört, und dein Geschwätz wird auf dich zurückfallen.
11 A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in a setting of silver.	11 Wie goldene Äpfel auf silbernen Schalen ist ein Wort, gesprochen zur rechten Zeit.
12 Like a gold ring or an ornament of gold is a wise reprover to a listening ear.	12 Wie ein goldener Ring und Schmuck aus Feingold ist ein weiser Mahner für ein Ohr, das zuhört.
13 Like the cold of snow in the time of harvest is a faithful messenger to those who send him, he refreshes the spirit of his masters.	13 Wie kühlender Schnee an einem Sommertag ist ein verlässlicher Bote für den, der ihn sendet; er erquickt die Seele seines Herrn.
14 Like clouds and wind without rain is a man who boasts of a gift he does not give.	14 Aufziehende Wolken mit Wind, doch kein Regen, so ist ein Mann, der Versprechungen macht und nicht hält.
15 With patience a ruler may be persuaded, and a soft tongue will break a bone.	15 Mit Geduld wird ein Vorgesetzter umgestimmt, sanfte Zunge bricht Knochen.
16 If you have found honey, eat only enough for you, lest you be sated with it and vomit it.	16 Findest du Honig, iss nur, so viel dir bekommt, sonst wirst du ihn satt und erbrichst ihn.
17 Let your foot be seldom in your neighbor's house, lest he become weary of you and hate you.	17 Mach dich rar im Haus deines Nächsten, sonst wird er dich satt und verabscheut dich.
18 A man who bears false witness against his neighbor is like a war club, or a sword, or a sharp arrow.	18 Keule und Schwert und scharfer Pfeil: das ist einer, der falsch aussagt gegen seinen Nächsten.
19 Trust in a faithless man in time of trouble is like a bad tooth or a foot that slips.	19 Schlechter Zahn und stolpernder Fuß: der Verräter am Tag der Not.
20 He who sings songs to a heavy heart is like one who takes off a garment on a cold day, and like vinegar on a wound.	20 Essig auf Laugensalz - (so ist,) wer Lieder singt vor einem missmutigen Herzen. [Wie die Motte am Kleid, der Wurm im Holz, so nagt der Kummer am Herzen des Menschen.]
21 If your enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he is thirsty, give him water to drink;	21 Hat dein Feind Hunger, gib ihm zu essen, hat er Durst, gib ihm zu trinken;
22 for you will heap coals of fire on his head, and the LORD will reward you.	22 so sammelst du glühende Kohlen auf sein Haupt und der Herr wird es dir vergelten.
23 The north wind brings forth rain; and a backbiting tongue, angry looks.	23 Der Nordwind bringt Regen, eine heimtückische Zunge zornige Gesichter.
24 It is better to live in a corner of the housetop than in a house shared with a contentious woman.	24 Besser in einer Ecke des Daches wohnen als eine zänkische Frau im gemeinsamen Haus.
25 Like cold water to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country.	25 Kühles Wasser für eine durstige Kehle ist eine gute Nachricht aus fernem Land.
26 Like a muddied spring or a polluted fountain is a righteous man who gives way before the wicked.	26 Ein getrübter Brunnen, ein verschütteter Quell ist ein Gerechter, der vor dem Frevler wankt.
27 It is not good to eat much honey, so be sparing of complimentary words.	27 Zu viel Honig essen ist nicht gut: Ebenso spare mit ehrenden Worten!
28 A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls.	28 Eine Stadt mit eingerissener Mauer ist ein Mann, der sich nicht beherrscht.
