1 "I have made a covenant with my eyes; how then could I look upon a virgin?	1 Io avea fatto patto con gli occhi miei; Come dunque avrei io mirata la vergine?
2 What would be my portion from God above, and my heritage from the Almighty on high?	2 E pur quale è la parte che Iddio mi ha mandata da alto? E quale è l’eredità che l’Onnipotente mi ha data da’ luoghi sovrani?
3 Does not calamity befall the unrighteous, and disaster the workers of iniquity?	3 La ruina non è ella per lo perverso, E gli accidenti strani per gli operatori d’iniquità?
4 Does not he see my ways, and number all my steps?	4 Non vede egli le mie vie? E non conta egli tutti i miei passi?
5 "If I have walked with falsehood, and my foot has hastened to deceit;	5 Se io son proceduto con falsità, E se il mio piè si è affrettato alla fraude,
6 (Let me be weighed in a just balance, and let God know my integrity!)	6 Pesimi pure Iddio con bilance giuste, E conoscerà la mia integrità.
7 if my step has turned aside from the way, and my heart has gone after my eyes, and if any spot has cleaved to my hands;	7 Se i miei passi si sono stornati dalla diritta via, E se il mio cuore è ito dietro agli occhi miei, E se alcuna macchia mi è rimasta attaccata alla mano;
8 then let me sow, and another eat; and let what grows for me be rooted out.	8 Semini pure io, e un altro se lo mangi; E sieno diradicati i miei rampolli
9 "If my heart has been enticed to a woman, and I have lain in wait at my neighbor's door;	9 Se il mio cuore è stato allettato dietro ad alcuna donna, E se io sono stato all’agguato all’uscio del mio prossimo;
10 then let my wife grind for another, and let others bow down upon her.	10 Macini pur la mia moglie ad un altro, E chininsi altri addosso a lei.
11 For that would be a heinous crime; that would be an iniquity to be punished by the judges;	11 Perciocchè quello è una scelleratezza, Ed una iniquità da giudici.
12 for that would be a fire which consumes unto Abaddon, and it would burn to the root all my increase.	12 Conciossiachè quello sarebbe stato un fuoco Che mi avrebbe consumato fino a perdizione, E avrebbe diradicata tutta la mia rendita.
13 "If I have rejected the cause of my manservant or my maidservant, when they brought a complaint against me;	13 Se io ho disdegnato di comparire in giudicio col mio servitore, E con la mia servente, Quando hanno litigato meco;
14 what then shall I do when God rises up? When he makes inquiry, what shall I answer him?	14 E che farei io, quando Iddio si leverà? E quando egli ne farà inchiesta, che gli risponderei?
15 Did not he who made me in the womb make him? And did not one fashion us in the womb?	15 Colui che mi ha fatto nel seno non ha egli fatto ancora lui? Non è egli un medesimo che ci ha formati nella matrice?
16 "If I have withheld anything that the poor desired, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail,	16 Se io ho rifiutato a’ poveri ciò che desideravano, Ed ho fatti venir meno gli occhi della vedova;
17 or have eaten my morsel alone, and the fatherless has not eaten of it	17 E se ho mangiato tutto solo il mio boccone, E se l’orfano non ne ha eziandio mangiato;
18 (for from his youth I reared him as a father, and from his mother's womb I guided him);	18 Conciossiachè dalla mia fanciullezza esso sia stato allevato meco, Come appresso un padre; Ed io abbia dal ventre di mia madre avuta cura della vedova;
19 if I have seen any one perish for lack of clothing, or a poor man without covering;	19 Se ho veduto che alcuno perisse per mancamento di vestimento, E che il bisognoso non avesse nulla da coprirsi;
20 if his loins have not blessed me, and if he was not warmed with the fleece of my sheep;	20 Se le sue reni non mi hanno benedetto, E se egli non si è riscaldato con la lana delle mie pecore;
21 if I have raised my hand against the fatherless, because I saw help in the gate;	21 Se io ho levata la mano contro all’orfano, Perchè io vedeva chi mi avrebbe aiutato nella porta;
22 then let my shoulder blade fall from my shoulder, and let my arm be broken from its socket.	22 Caggiami la paletta della spalla, E sia il mio braccio rotto, e divelto dalla sua canna.
23 For I was in terror of calamity from God, and I could not have faced his majesty.	23 Perciocchè io avea spavento della ruina mandata da Dio, E che io non potrei durar per la sua altezza
24 "If I have made gold my trust, or called fine gold my confidence;	24 Se ho posto l’oro per mia speranza; E se ho detto all’oro fino: Tu sei la mia confidanza;
25 if I have rejoiced because my wealth was great, or because my hand had gotten much;	25 Se mi son rallegrato perchè le mie facoltà fosser grandi, E perchè la mia mano avesse acquistato assai;
26 if I have looked at the sun when it shone, or the moon moving in splendor,	26 Se ho riguardato il sole, quando risplendeva; E la luna facendo il suo corso, chiara e lucente;
27 and my heart has been secretly enticed, and my mouth has kissed my hand;	27 E se il mio cuore è stato di nascosto sedotto, E la mia bocca ha baciata la mia mano;
28 this also would be an iniquity to be punished by the judges, for I should have been false to God above.	28 Questa ancora è una iniquità da giudici; Conciossiachè io avrei rinnegato l’Iddio disopra.
29 "If I have rejoiced at the ruin of him that hated me, or exulted when evil overtook him	29 Se mi son rallegrato della calamità del mio nemico, Se mi son commosso di allegrezza, quando male gli era sopraggiunto,
30 (I have not let my mouth sin by asking for his life with a curse);	30 Io che non pure ho recato il mio palato a peccare, Per chieder la sua morte con maledizione;
31 if the men of my tent have not said, 'Who is there that has not been filled with his meat?'	31 Se la gente del mio tabernacolo non ha detto: Chi ci darà della sua carne? Noi non ce ne potremmo giammai satollare….
32 (the sojourner has not lodged in the street; I have opened my doors to the wayfarer);	32 Il forestiere non è restato la notte in su la strada; Io ho aperto il mio uscio al viandante
33 if I have concealed my transgressions from men, by hiding my iniquity in my bosom,	33 Se io ho coperto il mio misfatto, come fanno gli uomini, Per nasconder la mia iniquità nel mio seno…
34 because I stood in great fear of the multitude, and the contempt of families terrified me, so that I kept silence, and did not go out of doors--	34 Quantunque io potessi spaventare una gran moltitudine, Pure i più vili della gente mi facevano paura, Ed io mi taceva, e non usciva fuor della porta.
35 Oh, that I had one to hear me! (Here is my signature! let the Almighty answer me!) Oh, that I had the indictment written by my adversary!	35 Oh! avessi io pure chi mi ascoltasse! Ecco, il mio desiderio è Che l’Onnipotente mi risponda, O che colui che litiga meco mi faccia una scritta;
36 Surely I would carry it on my shoulder; I would bind it on me as a crown;	36 Se io non la porto in su la spalla, E non me la lego attorno a guisa di bende.
37 I would give him an account of all my steps; like a prince I would approach him.	37 Io gli renderei conto di tutti i miei passi, Io mi accosterei a lui come un capitano.
38 "If my land has cried out against me, and its furrows have wept together;	38 Se la mia terra grida contro a me, E se parimente i suoi solchi piangono;
39 if I have eaten its yield without payment, and caused the death of its owners;	39 Se ho mangiati i suoi frutti senza pagamento, E se ho fatto sospirar l’anima de’ suoi padroni;
40 let thorns grow instead of wheat, and foul weeds instead of barley." The words of Job are ended.	40 In luogo del grano nascami il tribolo, E il loglio in luogo dell’orzo. Qui finiscono i ragionamenti di Giobbe
