1 "Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble.	1 Az asszony szülötte, az ember, rövid ideig él és betelik sok nyomorúsággal:
2 He comes forth like a flower, and withers; he flees like a shadow, and continues not.	2 mint a virág, kinyílik és elhervad, eltűnik, mint az árnyék, és nincsen tartós maradása.
3 And dost thou open thy eyes upon such a one and bring him into judgment with thee?	3 Mégis érdemesnek tartod, hogy rá vesd a szemedet, és perbe szállj vele?
4 Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? There is not one.	4 Tisztátalan magból fogantat ki tehet tisztává? Nemde te, az Egyedülvaló!
5 Since his days are determined, and the number of his months is with thee, and thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass,	5 Rövidek az ember napjai, és hónapjai száma tenálad van; határt szabtál neki, amelyet át nem hághat.
6 look away from him, and desist, that he may enjoy, like a hireling, his day.	6 Hagyd egy kevéssé magára, hadd pihenjen, míg el nem jön várva várt napja, mint a napszámosé.
7 "For there is hope for a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that its shoots will not cease.	7 Mert van ugyan reménye a fának: ha ki is vágják, újra sarjadzik, és ágai kihajtanak;
8 Though its root grow old in the earth, and its stump die in the ground,	8 ha meg is avul gyökere a földben, ha el is hal törzsöke a porban,
9 yet at the scent of water it will bud and put forth branches like a young plant.	9 már a víznek szagától is kifakad, és ágat hajt, mint amikor kiültették;
10 But man dies, and is laid low; man breathes his last, and where is he?	10 az ember azonban, ha meghal és levetkőztetik és elpusztul – ugyan hol van?
11 As waters fail from a lake, and a river wastes away and dries up,	11 Kiapadhat a víz a tengerből, elapadhat a Folyó és kiszáradhat,
12 so man lies down and rises not again; till the heavens are no more he will not awake, or be roused out of his sleep.	12 de ha az ember lefekszik, nem kel fel többé, az ég enyészetéig fel nem ébred, és fel nem kel álmából.
13 Oh that thou wouldest hide me in Sheol, that thou wouldest conceal me until thy wrath be past, that thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me!	13 Bárcsak biztos helyen tartanál az alvilágban, és elrejtenél, amíg el nem ül haragod! Bár időt szabnál nekem, amikor majd rólam megemlékezel!
14 If a man die, shall he live again? All the days of my service I would wait, till my release should come.	14 Ha az ember meghal, vajon életre kel-e ismét? Akkor katonasorom minden napján várnám, hogy eljöjjön leváltásom.
15 Thou wouldest call, and I would answer thee; thou wouldest long for the work of thy hands.	15 Te szólítanál, én meg jelentkeznék nálad, s odanyújtanád jobbodat kezed alkotásának.
16 For then thou wouldest number my steps, thou wouldest not keep watch over my sin;	16 Te akkor megszámlálnád lépteimet, de nem néznéd vétkeimet;
17 my transgression would be sealed up in a bag, and thou wouldest cover over my iniquity.	17 bűneim tarsolyban, pecsét alatt lennének, és betakarnád vétkemet.
18 "But the mountain falls and crumbles away, and the rock is removed from its place;	18 De a hegy, ha beomlik, szétesik, s a szikla elszakad a helyétől;
19 the waters wear away the stones; the torrents wash away the soil of the earth; so thou destroyest the hope of man.	19 a köveket a víz elkoptatja, s az ár a törmeléket lassankint elmossa; épp így teszed tönkre az ember reményét.
20 Thou prevailest for ever against him, and he passes; thou changest his countenance, and sendest him away.	20 Erőhöz engeded kissé, hogy azután elmehessen örökre; elváltoztatod arcát, és elbocsátod.
21 His sons come to honor, and he does not know it; they are brought low, and he perceives it not.	21 Ha a fiait tisztesség éri, nem tud róla, és ha lenézik őket, nem veszi észre;
22 He feels only the pain of his own body, and he mourns only for himself."	22 csak magában fájdítja testét – amíg él –, és lelke önmagán kesereg.«
