1 Now Maccabeus and his followers, the Lord leading them on, recovered the temple and the city;	1 cf2Cependant Machabée et ceux qui étaient avec lui reprirent, grâce à la protection du Seigneur, le temple et la ville.
2 and they tore down the altars which had been built in the public square by the foreigners, and also destroyed the sacred precincts.	2 Ils détruisirent les autels que les étrangers avaient dressés sur les places publiques, ainsi que les sanctuaires (temples des idoles) ;
3 They purified the sanctuary, and made another altar of sacrifice; then, striking fire out of flint, they offered sacrifices, after a lapse of two years, and they burned incense and lighted lamps and set out the bread of the Presence.	3 et, après avoir purifié le temple, ils érigèrent un autre autel ; et, ayant tiré des étincelles de(s) pierres à feu, ils offrirent des sacrifices après deux ans (après), et ils mirent l'encens, les lampes et les pains de proposition.
4 And when they had done this, they fell prostrate and besought the Lord that they might never again fall into such misfortunes, but that, if they should ever sin, they might be disciplined by him with forbearance and not be handed over to blasphemous and barbarous nations.	4 Cela fait, ils demandaient au Seigneur, prosternés à terre, de ne plus tomber dans de tels maux ; mais, s'ils péchaient jamais, d'être châtiés plus doucement par lui, et de n'être plus livrés à des barbares et à des blasphémateurs.
5 It happened that on the same day on which the sanctuary had been profaned by the foreigners, the purification of the sanctuary took place, that is, on the twenty-fifth day of the same month, which was Chislev.	5 Or il arriva que la purification du temple eut lieu le même jour où il avait été profané par les étrangers, le vingt-cinq du mois de Casleu.
6 And they celebrated it for eight days with rejoicing, in the manner of the feast of booths, remembering how not long before, during the feast of booths, they had been wandering in the mountains and caves like wild animals.	6 Ils célébrèrent cette fête avec joie pendant huit jours, comme celle des tabernacles, se souvenant que, peu de temps auparavant, ils avaient passé la fête solennelle des tabernacles sur les montagnes et dans les cavernes, à la manière des bêtes sauvages.

9 Such then was the end of Antiochus, who was called Epiphanes.	9 Telle fut donc la fin de la vie d'Antiochus, qui fut appelé le Noble.
10 Now we will tell what took place under Antiochus Eupator, who was the son of that ungodly man, and will give a brief summary of the principal calamities of the wars.	10 Nous raconterons maintenant les actions d'Eupator, fils de l'impie Antiochus, en exposant brièvement (abrégeant) les maux arrivés pendant ses (les) guerres.
11 This man, when he succeeded to the kingdom, appointed one Lysias to have charge of the government and to be chief governor of Coelesyria and Phoenicia.	11 Lorsqu'il prit possession du pouvoir, il établit sur les affaires du royaume un certain Lysias, chef (prince) de l'armée de Phénicie et de Syrie.
12 Ptolemy, who was called Macron, took the lead in showing justice to the Jews because of the wrong that had been done to them, and attempted to maintain peaceful relations with them.	12 Car Ptolémée, surnommé Macer (le Maigre), résolut d'être tout à fait juste envers les Juifs, surtout à cause de l'injustice qu'on leur avait faite, et d'agir avec eux dans un esprit de paix.
13 As a result he was accused before Eupator by the king's friends. He heard himself called a traitor at every turn, because he had abandoned Cyprus, which Philometor had entrusted to him, and had gone over to Antiochus Epiphanes. 14 When Gorgias became governor of the region, he maintained a force of mercenaries, and at every turn kept on warring against the Jews.	14 Or Gorgias, qui commandait en ces lieux, ayant pris des troupes étrangères, combattait souvent contre les Juifs.
15 Besides this, the Idumeans, who had control of important strongholds, were harassing the Jews; they received those who were banished from Jerusalem, and endeavored to keep up the war.	15 Mais les Juifs, qui occupaient des forteresses avantageuses, recevaient ceux qui avaient été chassés de Jérusalem, et cherchaient à faire la guerre.
16 But Maccabeus and his men, after making solemn supplication and beseeching God to fight on their side, rushed to the strongholds of the Idumeans.	16 Cependant ceux qui étaient avec Machabée, ayant conjuré par leurs prières le Seigneur de venir à leur secours, attaquèrent avec vigueur les forteresses des Iduméens ;

19 Maccabeus left Simon and Joseph, and also Zacchaeus and his men, a force sufficient to besiege them; and he himself set off for places where he was more urgently needed.	19 Machabée laissa pour les forcer Simon, Joseph et Zachée, et les hommes assez nombreux qui étaient avec eux, et il partit lui-même pour des expéditions qui pressaient davantage.

22 Then he slew these men who had turned traitor, and immediately captured the two towers.	22 Il fit donc mourir ceux qui étaient devenus des traîtres, et il s'empara aussitôt des deux tours.
23 Having success at arms in everything he undertook, he destroyed more than twenty thousand in the two strongholds.	23 Et, tout cédant heureusement à ses armes et à ses efforts, il tua dans ces deux forteresses plus de vingt mille hommes.
24 Now Timothy, who had been defeated by the Jews before, gathered a tremendous force of mercenaries and collected the cavalry from Asia in no small number. 29 When the battle became fierce, there appeared to the enemy from heaven five resplendent men on horses with golden bridles, and they were leading the Jews.	29 Mais, au plus fort du combat, cinq hommes apparurent du ciel aux ennemis, sur des chevaux ornés de freins d'or, servant de guides aux Juifs.
30 Surrounding Maccabeus and protecting him with their own armor and weapons, they kept him from being wounded. And they showered arrows and thunderbolts upon the enemy, so that, confused and blinded, they were thrown into disorder and cut to pieces.	30 Deux d'entre eux, ayant Machabée au milieu d'eux, le couvraient de leurs armes, et le conservaient sain et sauf ; mais ils lançaient des traits et la foudre contre les ennemis, qui tombaient frappés d'aveuglement et mis en désordre (confondus par la cécité, et remplis de trouble, ils tombaient morts).
31 Twenty thousand five hundred were slaughtered, besides six hundred horsemen.	31 Il y en eut vingt mille cinq cents de tués, et six cents cavaliers.
32 Timothy himself fled to a stronghold called Gazara, especially well garrisoned, where Chaereas was commander.	32 Quant à Timothée, il s'enfuit à Gazara, place forte où commandait Chaeréas.
33 Then Maccabeus and his men were glad, and they besieged the fort for four days.	33 Machabée et ceux qui étaient avec lui, pleins de joie, assiégèrent cette forteresse pendant quatre jours.
34 The men within, relying on the strength of the place, blasphemed terribly and hurled out wicked words.	34 Ceux qui étaient dedans, se confiant dans la force de la place, les maudissaient sans mesure et proféraient des paroles abominables (impies).
35 But at dawn of the fifth day, twenty young men in the army of Maccabeus, fired with anger because of the blasphemies, bravely stormed the wall and with savage fury cut down every one they met.	35 Mais, à l'aube du cinquième jour, vingt jeunes hommes de ceux qui étaient avec Machabée, irrités par ces blasphèmes, s'approchèrent courageusement de la muraille, et y montèrent avec une ardeur intrépide ;
36 Others who came up in the same way wheeled around against the defenders and set fire to the towers; they kindled fires and burned the blasphemers alive. Others broke open the gates and let in the rest of the force, and they occupied the city.	36 et d'autres, y étant montés de même, commencèrent à mettre le feu aux tours et aux portes, et à brûler vifs ces blasphémateurs (ceux mêmes qui les maudissaient).
37 They killed Timothy, who was hidden in a cistern, and his brother Chaereas, and Apollophanes.	37 Pendant deux jours entiers ils pillèrent la place, et ayant trouvé Timothée qui se cachait dans un certain lieu, ils le mirent à mort ; ils tuèrent aussi son frère Chaeréas et Apollophanès.
38 When they had accomplished these things, with hymns and thanksgivings they blessed the Lord who shows great kindness to Israel and gives them the victory.	38 Cela fait, ils bénissaient par des hymnes et des cantiques le Seigneur, qui avait fait de grandes choses en Israël, et qui leur avait donné la victoire.
