1 Simon heard that Trypho had assembled a large army to invade the land of Judah and destroy it,	1 Simón supo que Trifón había reunido un gran ejército para invadir y devastar a Judea.
2 and he saw that the people were trembling and fearful. So he went up to Jerusalem, and gathering the people together	2 Viendo que el pueblo era presa del pánico, subió a Jerusalén, reunió a sus habitantes
3 he encouraged them, saying to them, "You yourselves know what great things I and my brothers and the house of my father have done for the laws and the sanctuary; you know also the wars and the difficulties which we have seen.	3 y los exhortó, diciéndoles: «Ustedes saben muy bien todo lo que yo, mis hermanos y la familia de mi padre hemos hecho por las leyes y el Santuario, y las guerras y tribulaciones que hemos soportado.
4 By reason of this all my brothers have perished for the sake of Israel, and I alone am left.	4 A causa de esto, todos mis hermanos han muerto por Israel y he quedado yo solo.
5 And now, far be it from me to spare my life in any time of distress, for I am not better than my brothers.	5 ¡Pero lejos de mí tratar de ponerme a salvo en los momentos de peligro, ya que no valgo más que mis hermanos!
6 But I will avenge my nation and the sanctuary and your wives and children, for all the nations have gathered together out of hatred to destroy us."	6 Al contrario, vengaré a mi nación, al Santuario, a las mujeres y a los hijos de ustedes, porque todos los pueblos, por el odio que nos tienen, se han unido para exterminarnos».
7 The spirit of the people was rekindled when they heard these words,	7 Al oír estas palabras, se enardeció el espíritu del pueblo
8 and they answered in a loud voice, "You are our leader in place of Judas and Jonathan your brother.	8 y todos le respondieron a una sola voz: «Tú eres nuestro jefe, en; lugar de Judas y de tu hermano Jonatán:
9 Fight our battles, and all that you say to us we will do."	9 dirige nuestra guerra, y nosotros haremos todo lo que nos mandes».
10 So he assembled all the warriors and hastened to complete the walls of Jerusalem, and he fortified it on every side.	10 Luego reunió a todos los hombres aptos para la guerra, se apresuró a terminar los muros de Jerusalén y fortificó todo su contorno.
11 He sent Jonathan the son of Absalom to Joppa, and with him a considerable army; he drove out its occupants and remained there.	11 En seguida envió a Jonatán, hijo de Absalón, a Jope, con un buen número de hombres, y este expulsó a sus habitantes y se estableció en ella.
12 Then Trypho departed from Ptolemais with a large army to invade the land of Judah, and Jonathan was with him under guard.	12 Trifón partió de Tolemaida al frente de un gran ejército para invadir el país de Judá, llevando prisionero consigo a Jonatán.
13 And Simon encamped in Adida, facing the plain.	13 Entonces Simón acampó en Adidá, frente a la llanura.
14 Trypho learned that Simon had risen up in place of Jonathan his brother, and that he was about to join battle with him, so he sent envoys to him and said,	14 Al enterarse Trifón de que Simón había sucedido en el mando a su hermano Jonatán y que estaba preparado para combatir con él, le envió mensajeros para decirle:
15 "It is for the money that Jonathan your brother owed the royal treasury, in connection with the offices he held, that we are detaining him.	15 «Tenemos en nuestro poder a tu hermano Jonatán por las deudas contraídas con el tesoro real en el desempeño de su cargo.
16 Send now a hundred talents of silver and two of his sons as hostages, so that when released he will not revolt against us, and we will release him."	16 Envíanos cien talentos de plata y a dos de sus hijos como rehenes, no sea que una vez puesto en libertad se vuelva contra nosotros. Sólo así lo soltaremos».
17 Simon knew that they were speaking deceitfully to him, but he sent to get the money and the sons, lest he arouse great hostility among the people, who might say,	17 Simón, aunque se dio cuenta del engaño, mandó traer el dinero y a los niños, a fin de no provocar una fuerte oposición de parte del pueblo,
18 "Because Simon * did not send him the money and the sons, he perished."	18 que de lo contrario hubiera dicho: «Por no haberle enviado el dinero y a los niños, ha muerto Jonatán».
19 So he sent the sons and the hundred talents, but Trypho * broke his word and did not release Jonathan.	19 Entonces envió a los niños, junto con los cien talentos, pero Trifón faltó a su palabra y no liberó a Jonatán.
20 After this Trypho came to invade the country and destroy it, and he circled around by the way to Adora. But Simon and his army kept marching along opposite him to every place he went.	20 Después de esto, se puso en marcha para invadir el país y devastarlo. 21 Now the men in the citadel kept sending envoys to Trypho urging him to come to them by way of the wilderness and to send them food.	21 Al mismo tiempo, los de la Ciudadela enviaban mensajeros a Trifón, instándolo a que viniera por el desierto y les hiciera llegar víveres.
22 So Trypho got all his cavalry ready to go, but that night a very heavy snow fell, and he did not go because of the snow. He marched off and went into the land of Gilead.	22 Trifón dispuso toda su caballería para ir, pero aquella noche cayó tanta nieve que no pudo avanzar. Por eso partió y se fue a Galaad.
23 When he approached Baskama, he killed Jonathan, and he was buried there.	23 En las cercanías de Bascamá, hizo matar a Jonatán, que fue enterrado allí mismo.
24 Then Trypho turned back and departed to his own land.	24 Luego Trifón dio la vuelta y volvió a su país.
25 And Simon sent and took the bones of Jonathan his brother, and buried him in Modein, the city of his fathers.	25 Simón mandó recoger los restos de su hermano Jonatán y les dio sepultura en Modín, la ciudad de sus padres.
26 All Israel bewailed him with great lamentation, and mourned for him many days.	26 Todo Israel hizo un gran duelo por él y lo lloraron durante muchos días.
27 And Simon built a monument over the tomb of his father and his brothers; he made it high that it might be seen, with polished stone at the front and back.	27 Simón construyó sobre el sepulcro de su padre y de sus hermanos un mausoleo bien alto, de manera que pudiera verse, cubriéndolo por detrás y por delante con piedras pulidas.
28 He also erected seven pyramids, opposite one another, for his father and mother and four brothers.	28 Levantó siete pirámides, una frente a otra, dedicadas a su padre;, a su madre y a sus cuatro hermanos.
29 And for the pyramids * he devised an elaborate setting, erecting about them great columns, and upon the columns he put suits of armor for a permanent memorial, and beside the suits of armor carved ships, so that they could be seen by all who sail the sea.	29 Las adornó, rodeándolas de grande columnas y sobre estas colocó escudos con armas, en recuerdo eterno. Junto a las armas, hizo esculpir unas naves, para que las vieran los que navegan por el mar.
30 This is the tomb which he built in Modein; it remains to this day.	30 Este es el mausoleo que construyó en Modín y que existe hasta el día de hoy.
31 Trypho dealt treacherously with the young king Antiochus; he killed him	31 Trifón, que actuaba insidiosamente con el joven rey Antíoco, terminó por matarlo.
32 and became king in his place, putting on the crown of Asia; and he brought great calamity upon the land.	32 Ocupó su trono y se ciñó la corona de Asia, causando grandes estragos en el país.
33 But Simon built up the strongholds of Judea and walled them all around, with high towers and great walls and gates and bolts, and he stored food in the strongholds.	33 Simón, por su parte, reparó las fortalezas de Judea, las rodeó de altas torres y de grandes murallas con puertas y cerrojos, y almacenó víveres en ellas.
34 Simon also chose men and sent them to Demetrius the king with a request to grant relief to the country, for all that Trypho did was to plunder.	34 Después eligió a algunos hombres y los envió al rey Demetrio, para que este concediera al país una remisión de impuestos, ya que Trifón no había hecho más que cometer depredaciones.
35 Demetrius the king sent him a favorable reply to this request, and wrote him a letter as follows,	35 El rey Demetrio accedió a su demanda, y le escribió esta carta:
36 "King Demetrius to Simon, the high priest and friend of kings, and to the elders and nation of the Jews, greeting.	36 «El rey Demetrio saluda a Simón, Sumo Sacerdote y amigo de reyes, a los ancianos y a la nación de los judíos.
37 We have received the gold crown and the palm branch which you * sent, and we are ready to make a general peace with you and to write to our officials to grant you release from tribute.	37 Hemos recibido la corona de oro y el ramo de palma que ustedes nos enviaron y estamos dispuestos a otorgarles una paz completa y a ordenar a los funcionarios que les concedan la exención de las deudas.
38 All the grants that we have made to you remain valid, and let the strongholds that you have built be your possession.	38 Todo lo que hemos decretado en favor de ustedes mantendrá su vigencia, y quedarán en poder de ustedes las fortalezas que han construido.
39 We pardon any errors and offenses committed to this day, and cancel the crown tax which you owe; and whatever other tax has been collected in Jerusalem shall be collected no longer.	39 Les indultamos los errores y delitos cometidos hasta el día de hoy y renunciamos a la corona que nos deben. Si se percibía algún otro impuesto de Jerusalén, ya no será exigido.
40 And if any of you are qualified to be enrolled in our bodyguard, * let them be enrolled, and let there be peace between us."	40 Si alguno de ustedes es apto para enrolarse en nuestro séquito, podrá inscribirse. Y que haya paz entre nosotros».
41 In the one hundred and seventieth year * the yoke of the Gentiles was removed from Israel,	41 El año ciento setenta Israel fue liberado del yugo de las naciones.
42 and the people began to write in their documents and contracts, "In the first year of Simon the great high priest and commander and leader of the Jews."	42 A partir de entonces, el pueblo comenzó a escribir en los documentos y contratos: «Año primero de Simón, Sumo Sacerdote insigne y general en jefe de los Judíos».
43 In those days Simon * encamped against Gazara * and surrounded it with troops. He made a siege engine, brought it up to the city, and battered and captured one tower.	43 En aquellos días Simón acampó frente a Gázara y la sitió con sus tropas. Fabricó una torre móvil de asalto y la acercó a la ciudad; así embistió uno de los baluartes y lo tomó.
44 The men in the siege engine leaped out into the city, and a great tumult arose in the city.	44 Los que estaban en la torre saltaron al interior de la ciudad y se produjo entre la gente una gran conmoción.
45 The men in the city, with their wives and children, went up on the wall with their clothes rent, and they cried out with a loud voice, asking Simon to make peace with them;	45 Los habitantes de la ciudad, con sus mujeres y sus niños, subieron a la muralla, rasgándose las vestiduras y pidiendo a gritos a Simón que les concediera la paz.
46 they said, "Do not treat us according to our wicked acts but according to your mercy."	46 «No nos trates, le decían, según nuestras maldades, sino según tu misericordia».
47 So Simon reached an agreement with them and stopped fighting against them. But he expelled them from the city and cleansed the houses in which the idols were, and then entered it with hymns and praise.	47 Entonces Simón se reconcilió con ellos y dejó de atacarlos, pero los expulsó de la ciudad y purificó las casas donde había ídolos. Así entró en la ciudad, entonando himnos y bendiciones.
48 He cast out of it all uncleanness, and settled in it men who observed the law. He also strengthened its fortifications and built in it a house for himself.	48 Después de limpiarla de toda impureza, estableció en ella gente que practicaba la Ley, la fortificó y se construyó una residencia.
49 The men in the citadel at Jerusalem were prevented from going out to the country and back to buy and sell. So they were very hungry, and many of them perished from famine.	49 Los que ocupaban la Ciudadela de Jerusalén, como no podían ir y venir por la región para comprar y vender, se vieron acosados por el hambre, y muchos de ellos murieron de inanición.
50 Then they cried to Simon to make peace with them, and he did so. But he expelled them from there and cleansed the citadel from its pollutions.	50 Entonces clamaron a Simón, pidiéndole la paz. El se la concedió, pero los expulsó de allí y purificó la Ciudadela de toda contaminación.
51 On the twenty-third day of the second month, in the one hundred and seventy-first year, * the Jews * entered it with praise and palm branches, and with harps and cymbals and stringed instruments, and with hymns and songs, because a great enemy had been crushed and removed from Israel.	51 Los judíos entraron en ella el día veintitrés del segundo mes del año ciento setenta y uno, con vítores y palmas, al son de arpas, címbalos y cítaras, y entonando himnos y cantos, porque un gran enemigo había sido exterminado de Israel.
52 And Simon * decreed that every year they should celebrate this day with rejoicing. He strengthened the fortifications of the temple hill alongside the citadel, and he and his men dwelt there.	52 Simón dispuso que este día se celebrara cada año jubilosamente. Luego fortificó la montaña del Templo a lo largo de la Ciudadela y se estableció allí con los suyos.
53 And Simon saw that John his son had reached manhood, so he made him commander of all the forces, and he dwelt in Gazara.	53 Y al ver que su hijo Juan era ya un hombre, lo nombró general de todas las tropas. Juan vivía en Gázara.
