1 Now when Jonathan saw that the time was favorable for him, he chose men and sent them to Rome to confirm and renew the friendship with them.	1 Jonathas vit que le temps lui était favorable, et il choisit des hommes qu'il envoya à Rome, pour affermir et renouveler l'amitié avec les Romains.
2 He also sent letters to the same effect to the Spartans and to other places.	2 Il envoya aussi aux Spartiates, et en d'autres lieux, des lettres dont la forme était la même.
3 So they went to Rome and entered the senate chamber and said, "Jonathan the high priest and the Jewish nation have sent us to renew the former friendship and alliance with them."	3 Ils allèrent à Rome, et entrèrent au sénat, et dirent: Jonathas, grand prêtre, et la nation des Juifs, nous ont envoyés pour que nous renouvelions l'amitié et l'alliance, selon qu'elle a été faite auparavant.
4 And the Romans * gave them letters to the people in every place, asking them to provide for the envoys * safe conduct to the land of Judah.	4 Et les Romains leur donnèrent des lettres pour leurs officiers dans chaque région, afin qu'ils les fissent conduire en paix dans le pays de Juda.
5 This is a copy of the letter which Jonathan wrote to the Spartans:	5 Voici la copie des lettres que Jonathas écrit aux Spartiates:
6 "Jonathan the high priest, the senate of the nation, the priests, and the rest of the Jewish people to their brethren the Spartans, greeting.	6 Jonathas, grand prêtre, les anciens de la nation, les prêtres et le reste du peuple juif, aux Spartiates, leurs frères, salut.
7 Already in time past a letter was sent to Onias the high priest from Arius, * who was king among you, stating that you are our brethren, as the appended copy shows.	7 Il y a longtemps que des lettres ont été envoyées à Onias, le grand prêtre, par Arius, qui régnait chez vous, car vous êtes nos frères, comme le montre la copie qui est jointe ici.
8 Onias welcomed the envoy with honor, and received the letter, which contained a clear declaration of alliance and friendship.	8 Et Onias accueillit avec honneur l'homme qui avait été envoyé, et il reçut les lettres, où il était parlé d'alliance et d'amitié.
9 Therefore, though we have no need of these things, since we have as encouragement the holy books which are in our hands,	9 Et nous, quoique nous n'eussions pas besoin de ces choses, ayant pour consolation les saints livres qui sont entre nos mains,
10 we have undertaken to send to renew our brotherhood and friendship with you, so that we may not become estranged from you, for considerable time has passed since you sent your letter to us.	10 nous avons mieux aimé envoyer vers vous, pour renouveler la fraternité et l'amitié, de peur que nous ne vous devenions étrangers; car il s'est écoulé beaucoup de temps depuis que vous avez envoyé vers nous.
11 We therefore remember you constantly on every occasion, both in our feasts and on other appropriate days, at the sacrifices which we offer and in our prayers, as it is right and proper to remember brethren.	11 Nous donc, sans cesse en tout temps, aux jours solennels et aux autres jours où cela est nécessaire, nous nous souvenons de vous dans les sacrifices que nous offrons, et dans nos cérémonies, selon qu'il est du devoir et de la bienséance de se souvenir de ses frères.
12 And we rejoice in your glory.	12 Nous nous réjouissons donc de votre gloire.
13 But as for ourselves, many afflictions and many wars have encircled us; the kings round about us have waged war against us.	13 Mais pour nous, beaucoup de tribulations et beaucoup de combats nous ont entourés, et les rois qui sont autour de nous nous ont attaqués.
14 We were unwilling to annoy you and our other allies and friends with these wars,	14 Cependant nous n'avons voulu être à charge ni à vous, ni à nos autres alliés et amis, dans ces combats;
15 for we have the help which comes from Heaven for our aid; and we were delivered from our enemies and our enemies were humbled.	15 car nous avons reçu du secours du Ciel, et nous avons été délivrés, et nos ennemis ont été humiliés.
16 We therefore have chosen Numenius the son of Antiochus and Antipater the son of Jason, and have sent them to Rome to renew our former friendship and alliance with them.	16 C'est pourquoi nous avons choisi Numénius, fils d'Antiochus, et Antipator, fils de Jason, et nous les avons envoyés vers les Romains, pour renouveler avec eux l'amitié et l'alliance antérieure;
17 We have commanded them to go also to you and greet you and deliver to you this letter from us concerning the renewal of our brotherhood.	17 nous leur avons aussi ordonné d'aller auprès de vous, de vous saluer, et de vous porter nos lettres relatives au renouvellement de notre fraternité.
18 And now please send us a reply to this."	18 Et maintenant, vous ferez bien de nous répondre au sujet de ces choses.
19 This is a copy of the letter which they sent to Onias:	19 Voici la copie de la lettre qu'Arius avait envoyée à Onias:
20 "Arius, king of the Spartans, to Onias the high priest, greeting.	20 Arius, roi des Spartiates, au grand prêtre Onias, salut.
21 It has been found in writing concerning the Spartans and the Jews that they are brethren and are of the family of Abraham.	21 Il a été trouvé, dans un écrit qui concerne les Spartiates et les Juifs, qu'ils sont frères et qu'ils sont de la race d'Abraham.
22 And now that we have learned this, please write us concerning your welfare;	22 Et maintenant, depuis que nous avons connu ces choses, vous faites bien de nous écrire au sujet de votre prospérité.
23 we on our part write to you that your cattle and your property belong to us, and ours belong to you. We therefore command that our envoys * report to you accordingly."	23 Mais nous aussi nous vous avons répondu. Nos bestiaux et nos biens sont à vous, et les vôtres sont à nous: nous avons donc ordonné que cela vous soit déclaré.
24 Now Jonathan heard that the commanders of Demetrius had returned, with a larger force than before, to wage war against him.	24 Cependant Jonathas apprit que les généraux de Démétrius étaient revenus avec une armée beaucoup plus grande qu'auparavant, pour combattre contre lui;
25 So he marched away from Jerusalem and met them in the region of Hamath, for he gave them no opportunity to invade his own country.	25 et il sortit de Jérusalem, et alla au-devant d'eux dans le pays d'Amathis, car il ne leur donna pas le temps d'entrer sur ses terres.
26 He sent spies to their camp, and they returned and reported to him that the enemy * were being drawn up in formation to fall upon the Jews * by night.	26 Et il envoya des espions dans leur camp, et, de retour, ils rapportèrent qu'ils avaient résolu de le surprendre pendant la nuit.
27 So when the sun set, Jonathan commanded his men to be alert and to keep their arms at hand so as to be ready all night for battle, and he stationed outposts around the camp.	27 Après donc que le soleil fut couché, Jonathas ordonna aux siens de veiller, et de se tenir toute la nuit sous les armes, prêts à combattre; et il mit des gardes autour du camp.
28 When the enemy heard that Jonathan and his men were prepared for battle, they were afraid and were terrified at heart; so they kindled fires in their camp and withdrew. *	28 Les ennemis apprirent que Jonathas était prêt avec les siens pour le combat, et ils craignirent et furent saisis d'effroi dans leurs coeurs; ils allumèrent des feux dans leur camp.
29 But Jonathan and his men did not know it until morning, for they saw the fires burning.	29 Mais Jonathas et ceux qui étaient avec lui ne s'en aperçurent pas jusqu'au matin, car ils voyaient les feux allumés.
30 Then Jonathan pursued them, but he did not overtake them, for they had crossed the Eleutherus river.	30 Jonathas les poursuivit; mais il ne les atteignit pas, car ils avaient passé le fleuve Eleuthère.
31 So Jonathan turned aside against the Arabs who are called Zabadeans, and he crushed them and plundered them.	31 Jonathas marcha de là vers les Arabes qui sont appelés Zabadéens; il les frappa; et prit leurs dépouilles.
32 Then he broke camp and went to Damascus, and marched through all that region.	32 Puis il partit et vint à Damas, et il parcourait toute cette contrée.
33 Simon also went forth and marched through the country as far as Askalon and the neighboring strongholds. He turned aside to Joppa and took it by surprise,	33 Cependant Simon était sorti et était venu jusqu'à Ascalon et aux forteresses voisines; il marcha de là vers Joppé et s'en empara;
34 for he had heard that they were ready to hand over the stronghold to the men whom Demetrius had sent. And he stationed a garrison there to guard it.	34 car il avait appris qu'on voulait livrer la place à ceux du parti de Démétrius; et il y mit une garnison pour la garder.
35 When Jonathan returned he convened the elders of the people and planned with them to build strongholds in Judea,	35 Jonathas revint, et assembla les anciens du peuple, et il résolut avec eux de bâtir des forteresses dans la Judée,
36 to build the walls of Jerusalem still higher, and to erect a high barrier between the citadel and the city to separate it from the city, in order to isolate it so that its garrison * could neither buy nor sell.	36 de bâtir aussi des murs dans Jérusalem, et d'élever un mur d'une grande hauteur entre la citadelle et la ville, pour la séparer de la ville, afin qu'elle fût isolée, et qu'on ne pût ni y acheter ni y vendre.
37 So they gathered together to build up the city; part of the wall on the valley to the east had fallen, and he repaired the section called Chaphenatha.	37 Ils s'assemblèrent donc pour bâtir la ville; et le mur qui était au-dessus du torrent, du côté du soleil levant, tomba, et Jonathas le rétablit; il s'appelait Caphététha.
38 And Simon built Adida in the Shephelah; he fortified it and installed gates with bolts.	38 Simon bâtit aussi Adiada dans la Sephéla; il la fortifia, et y mit des portes et des serrures.
39 Then Trypho attempted to become king in Asia and put on the crown, and to raise his hand against Antiochus the king.	39 Mais comme Tryphon avait résolu de régner en Asie, de prendre le diadème et d'étendre la main sur le roi Antiochus,
40 He feared that Jonathan might not permit him to do so, but might make war on him, so he kept seeking to seize and kill him, and he marched forth and came to Beth-shan.	40 craignant que Jonathas ne l'en empêchât et ne combattît contre lui, il cherchait à se saisir de lui et à le tuer. Se levant donc, il alla à Bethsan.
41 Jonathan went out to meet him with forty thousand picked fighting men, and he came to Beth-shan.	41 Jonathas sortit au-devant de lui pour le combattre avec quarante mille hommes choisis, et vint à Bethsan.
42 When Trypho saw that he had come with a large army, he was afraid to raise his hand against him.	42 Lorsque Tryphon vit que Jonathas était venu avec une armée nombreuse pour étendre la main sur lui, il eut peur,
43 So he received him with honor and commended him to all his friends, and he gave him gifts and commanded his friends and his troops to obey him as they would himself.	43 et il le reçut avec honneur, le recommanda à tous ses amis, lui fit des présents, et ordonna à son armée de lui obéir comme à lui-même.
44 Then he said to Jonathan, "Why have you wearied all these people when we are not at war?	44 Et il dit à Jonathas: Pourquoi as-tu fatigué tout ce peuple, puisque nous n'avons pas de guerre ensemble?
45 Dismiss them now to their homes and choose for yourself a few men to stay with you, and come with me to Ptolemais. I will hand it over to you as well as the other strongholds and the remaining troops and all the officials, and will turn round and go home. For that is why I am here."	45 Renvoie-les donc maintenant dans leurs maisons; mais choisis-en quelques-uns pour être avec toi, et viens avec moi à Ptolémaïs, et je te la livrerai, ainsi que les autres forteresses, et l'armée, et tous ceux qui sont préposés aux affaires, puis je m'en retournerai; car c'est pour cela que je suis venu.
46 Jonathan * trusted him and did as he said; he sent away the troops, and they returned to the land of Judah.	46 Jonathas le crut, et fit comme il avait dit: il renvoya les troupes, et elles s'en retournèrent dans le pays de Juda.
47 He kept with himself three thousand men, two thousand of whom he left in Galilee, while a thousand accompanied him.	47 Il retint cependant avec lui trois mille hommes, dont il renvoya deux mille en Galilée, et mille vinrent avec lui.
48 But when Jonathan entered Ptolemais, the men of Ptolemais closed the gates and seized him, and all who had entered with him they killed with the sword.	48 Mais dès que Jonathas fut entré dans Ptolémaïs, les habitants de la ville fermèrent les portes et le prirent; et ils tuèrent par le glaive tous ceux qui étaient entrés avec lui.
49 Then Trypho sent troops and cavalry into Galilee and the Great Plain to destroy all Jonathan's soldiers.	49 Tryphon envoya une armée et des cavaliers en Galilée, et dans la grande plaine, pour tuer tous les compagnons de Jonathas.
50 But they realized that Jonathan * had been seized and had perished along with his men, and they encouraged one another and kept marching in close formation, ready for battle.	50 Mais ceux-ci, ayant su que Jonathas avait été pris, et qu'il avait péri avec tous ceux qui étaient avec lui, s'encouragèrent les uns les autres; et sortirent prêts à combattre.
51 When their pursuers saw that they would fight for their lives, they turned back.	51 Ceux qui les avaient poursuivis, voyant qu'ils se battaient pour leur vie, s'en retournèrent;
52 So they all reached the land of Judah safely, and they mourned for Jonathan and his companions and were in great fear; and all Israel mourned deeply.	52 ainsi ils revinrent tous en paix dans le pays de Juda. On pleura beaucoup Jonathas et ceux qui étaient avec lui, et Israël en fit un grand deuil.
53 And all the nations round about them tried to destroy them, for they said, "They have no leader or helper. Now therefore let us make war on them and blot out the memory of them from among men."	53 Alors toutes les nations qui étaient autour d'eux cherchèrent à les écraser; car elles disaient:
	54 Ils n'ont ni chef ni auxiliaire; attaquons-les donc maintenant, et effaçons leur mémoire parmi les hommes.
