1 When the people saw that Moses delayed to come down from the mountain, the people gathered themselves together to Aaron, and said to him, "Up, make us gods, who shall go before us; as for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him."	1 Le peuple vit que Moïse tardait à descendre de la montagne. Alors le peuple se rassembla autour d’Aaron et lui dit: “Tu vas nous faire un dieu qui marche devant nous, car ce Moïse, l’homme qui nous a fait sortir du pays d’Égypte, nous ne savons pas ce qu’il est devenu!”
2 And Aaron said to them, "Take off the rings of gold which are in the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters, and bring them to me."	2 Aaron leur dit: “Enlevez les boucles d’or que vos femmes, vos fils et vos filles portent à leurs oreilles, et apportez-les moi.”
3 So all the people took off the rings of gold which were in their ears, and brought them to Aaron.	3 Ils enlevèrent tous les boucles d’or qu’ils avaient à leurs oreilles et ils les apportèrent à Aaron.
4 And he received the gold at their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, and made a molten calf; and they said, "These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!"	4 Lui reçut tout cela de leurs mains, on le façonna avec un burin et on en fit un veau de métal fondu. Ils s’écrièrent alors: “Israël! Voici ton Dieu qui t’a fait sortir du pays d’Égypte!”
5 When Aaron saw this, he built an altar before it; and Aaron made proclamation and said, "Tomorrow shall be a feast to the LORD."	5 Voyant ce veau, Aaron construisit un autel devant lui; puis il cria d’une voix forte: “Demain sera une fête pour Yahvé!”
6 And they rose up early on the morrow, and offered burnt offerings and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.	6 Le lendemain matin ils se levèrent, offrirent des sacrifices par le feu et présentèrent des offrandes. Le peuple s’assit pour manger et pour boire, puis on se leva pour se divertir.
7 And the LORD said to Moses, "Go down; for your people, whom you brought up out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves;	7 Yahvé dit alors à Moïse: “Va, redescends! Car ton peuple s’est corrompu, ce peuple que tu as fait sortir du pays d’Égypte!
8 they have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them; they have made for themselves a molten calf, and have worshipped it and sacrificed to it, and said, 'These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!'"	8 Ils n’ont pas été longs à se détourner de la voie que je leur avais enseignée: ils se sont fait un veau de métal fondu, ils se sont prosternés devant lui et lui ont présenté des sacrifices. Ils ont même dit: Israël, voici tes dieux qui t’ont fait sortir du pays d’Égypte!”
9 And the LORD said to Moses, "I have seen this people, and behold, it is a stiff-necked people;	9 Yahvé dit encore à Moïse: “J’ai bien compris que ce peuple a la nuque raide.
10 now therefore let me alone, that my wrath may burn hot against them and I may consume them; but of you I will make a great nation."	10 Laisse-moi donc déchaîner contre eux ma colère: je vais les faire disparaître, mais je ferai sortir de toi une grande nation.”
11 But Moses besought the LORD his God, and said, "O LORD, why does thy wrath burn hot against thy people, whom thou hast brought forth out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand?	11 Moïse voulut calmer Yahvé son Dieu, il lui dit: “Yahvé! Pourquoi te fâcher contre ton peuple que tu as fait sortir d’Égypte en déployant toute ta puissance?
12 Why should the Egyptians say, 'With evil intent did he bring them forth, to slay them in the mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth? Turn from thy fierce wrath, and repent of this evil against thy people.	12 Veux-tu que les Égyptiens disent: Il avait une arrière-pensée quand il les a fait sortir; il voulait les tuer dans les montagnes et les faire disparaître de la surface de la terre? Remets-toi de ta colère et renonce au mal que tu veux faire à ton peuple.
13 Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, thy servants, to whom thou didst swear by thine own self, and didst say to them, 'I will multiply your descendants as the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have promised I will give to your descendants, and they shall inherit it for ever.'"	13 Souviens-toi d’Abraham, d’Isaac et de Jacob, tes serviteurs. Tu leur as juré par toi-même: Je rendrai votre descendance aussi nombreuse que les étoiles du ciel, et tout le pays dont j’ai parlé, je le donnerai à tes descendants afin qu’ils le possèdent pour toujours.”
14 And the LORD repented of the evil which he thought to do to his people.	14 Ainsi donc Yahvé renonça au mal qu’il voulait faire à son peuple.
15 And Moses turned, and went down from the mountain with the two tables of the testimony in his hands, tables that were written on both sides; on the one side and on the other were they written.	15 Moïse redescendit de la montagne, tenant dans sa main les deux tables du Témoignage: elles étaient écrites des deux côtés, sur les deux faces.
16 And the tables were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, graven upon the tables.	16 Les tables étaient l’œuvre de Dieu et l’écriture gravée sur les tables était l’écriture de Dieu.
17 When Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted, he said to Moses, "There is a noise of war in the camp."	17 Josué entendit le vacarme du peuple en fête et dit à Moïse: “Mais c’est un bruit de guerre dans le camp!”
18 But he said, "It is not the sound of shouting for victory, or the sound of the cry of defeat, but the sound of singing that I hear."	18 Moïse répondit: “Ce n’est ni un chant de victoire, ni un chant de défaite, ce que j’entends, ce sont des chœurs alternés.”
19 And as soon as he came near the camp and saw the calf and the dancing, Moses' anger burned hot, and he threw the tables out of his hands and broke them at the foot of the mountain.	19 Quand Moïse approcha du camp, il vit le veau et les danses. Alors, au comble de la colère, il jeta les tables et les brisa au pied de la montagne.
20 And he took the calf which they had made, and burnt it with fire, and ground it to powder, and scattered it upon the water, and made the people of Israel drink it.	20 Moïse s’empara du veau qu’ils avaient fabriqué, il le brûla au feu, il le broya et le réduisit en poudre; puis il jeta la poudre dans de l’eau qu’il fit boire aux Israélites.
21 And Moses said to Aaron, "What did this people do to you that you have brought a great sin upon them?"	21 Moïse dit à Aaron: “Que t’a fait ce peuple pour que tu lui fasses commettre un si grand péché?”
22 And Aaron said, "Let not the anger of my lord burn hot; you know the people, that they are set on evil.	22 Aaron lui répondit: “Ne te mets pas en colère contre moi, mon seigneur! Tu sais toi-même combien ce peuple est porté au mal.
23 For they said to me, 'Make us gods, who shall go before us; as for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.'	23 Ils m’ont dit: Fais-nous un Dieu qui marche devant nous, car ce Moïse, l’homme qui nous a fait monter du pays d’Égypte, nous ne savons pas ce qu’il est devenu.
24 And I said to them, 'Let any who have gold take it off'; so they gave it to me, and I threw it into the fire, and there came out this calf."	24 Alors je leur ai dit: Qui a de l’or parmi vous? Ils l’ont aussitôt enlevé de leurs oreilles et me l’ont donné; je l’ai jeté dans le feu et il en est sorti ce veau.”
25 And when Moses saw that the people had broken loose (for Aaron had let them break loose, to their shame among their enemies),	25 Moïse se rendit compte que le peuple était déchaîné par la faute d’Aaron, et ses ennemis auraient bien eu de quoi le mépriser.
26 then Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, "Who is on the LORD's side? Come to me." And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together to him.	26 Alors Moïse, debout à la porte du camp, s’écria: “Que ceux qui sont pour Yahvé viennent à moi!” Et tous les fils de Lévi se rassemblèrent autour de lui.
27 And he said to them, "Thus says the LORD God of Israel, 'Put every man his sword on his side, and go to and fro from gate to gate throughout the camp, and slay every man his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbor.'"	27 Il leur dit: “Voici ce que dit Yahvé, le Dieu d’Israël: Prenez chacun votre épée, et passez et repassez dans le camp, d’une porte à l’autre! Exterminez frères, compagnons ou amis!”
28 And the sons of Levi did according to the word of Moses; and there fell of the people that day about three thousand men.	28 Les fils de Lévi firent ce que Moïse leur avait dit, et ce jour-là il y eut environ 3 000 victimes dans le peuple.
29 And Moses said, "Today you have ordained yourselves for the service of the LORD, each one at the cost of his son and of his brother, that he may bestow a blessing upon you this day."	29 Alors Moïse leur dit: “Aujourd’hui vous vous êtes consacrés à Yahvé par le sang, peut-être le sang d’un fils ou d’un frère, c’est pourquoi il vous donne aujourd’hui la bénédiction.”
30 On the morrow Moses said to the people, "You have sinned a great sin. And now I will go up to the LORD; perhaps I can make atonement for your sin."	30 Le lendemain Moïse dit au peuple: “Vous avez commis un grand péché, mais je vais monter vers Yahvé, peut-être obtiendrai-je le pardon de votre péché.”
31 So Moses returned to the LORD and said, "Alas, this people have sinned a great sin; they have made for themselves gods of gold.	31 Moïse revint donc vers Yahvé et lui dit: “Ce peuple a commis un grand péché, ils se sont fait un dieu en or;
32 But now, if thou wilt forgive their sin--and if not, blot me, I pray thee, out of thy book which thou hast written."	32 veux-tu pourtant leur pardonner?… Sinon, efface-moi du livre que tu as écrit.”
33 But the LORD said to Moses, "Whoever has sinned against me, him will I blot out of my book.	33 Yahvé dit à Moïse: “Celui qui a péché contre moi, c’est lui que j’effacerai de mon livre.
34 But now go, lead the people to the place of which I have spoken to you; behold, my angel shall go before you. Nevertheless, in the day when I visit, I will visit their sin upon them."	34 Pour l’instant, va et conduis ce peuple où je t’ai dit! Mon ange marchera devant toi mais, au jour du châtiment, je les punirai pour leur péché.”
35 And the LORD sent a plague upon the people, because they made the calf which Aaron made.	35 Yahvé frappa donc le peuple pour le veau qu’ils avaient fait, pour le veau qu’avait fabriqué Aaron.
