1 At that time Judith heard about these things: she was the daughter of Merari the son of Ox, son of Joseph, son of Oziel, son of Elkiah, son of Ananias, son of Gideon, son of Raphaim, son of Ahitub, son of Elijah, son of Hilkiah, son of Eliab, son of Nathanael, son of Salamiel, son of Sarasadai, son of Israel.	1 Or queste parole furono intese da Giuditta, vedova, figlia di Merari, figlio di Idox, figlio di Giuseppe, figlio di Ozia, figlio di Elai, figlio di Iamnor, figlio di Gedeone, figlio di Rafaim, figlio di Achitob, figlio di Melchia, figlio di Enam, figlio di Natania, figlio di Salatici, figlio di Simeone, figlio di Ruben.
2 Her husband Manasseh, who belonged to her tribe and family, had died during the barley harvest.	2 Suo marito fu Manasse il quale morì durante la mietitura dell'orzo,
3 For as he stood overseeing the men who were binding sheaves in the field, he was overcome by the burning heat, and took to his bed and died in Bethulia his city. So they buried him with his fathers in the field between Dothan and Balamon.	3 mentre sorvegliava quei che legavano i covoni nel campo, colpito al capo dal caldo, morì in Betulia sua città ed ivi fu sepolto coi suoi padri.
4 Judith had lived at home as a widow for three years and four months.	4 Giuditta era vedova di lui già da tre anni e sei mesi,
5 She set up a tent for herself on the roof of her house, and girded sackcloth about her loins and wore the garments of her widowhood.	5 e, nella parte superiore della casa, s'era fatta una stanza appartata, dove se ne stava rinchiusa colle sue ancelle,
6 She fasted all the days of her widowhood, except the day before the sabbath and the sabbath itself, the day before the new moon and the day of the new moon, and the feasts and days of rejoicing of the house of Israel.	6 portando sui suoi fianchi un cilizio, e digiunando tutti i giorni di sua vita, eccetto i sabati, i primi del mese e le feste della casa d'Israele.
7 She was beautiful in appearance, and had a very lovely face; and her husband Manasseh had left her gold and silver, and men and women slaves, and cattle, and fields; and she maintained this estate.	7 Era bellissima: suo marito le aveva lasciate molte ricchezze, una numerosa famiglia, e dei possessi pieni d'armenti e di greggi di pecore.
8 No one spoke ill of her, for she feared God with great devotion.	8 Era in grandissima stima presso tutti, perchè temeva molto Dio, e non v'era chi potesse dir male di lei.
9 When Judith heard the wicked words spoken by the people against the ruler, because they were faint for lack of water, and when she heard all that Uzziah said to them, and how he promised them under oath to surrender the city to the Assyrians after five days,	9 Or dunque avendo essa sentito dire come Ozia avesse promesso la resa della città passati cinque giorni, mandò a chiamare gli anziani Cabri e Carmi.
10 she sent her maid, who was in charge of all she possessed, to summon Chabris and Charmis, the elders of her city.	10 Andati che furono da lei, disse loro: « Che parola è quella con la quale Ozia ha consentito di consegnare la città agli Assiri, se dentro cinque giorni non vi viene soccorso?
11 They came to her, and she said to them, "Listen to me, rulers of the people of Bethulia! What you have said to the people today is not right; you have even sworn and pronounced this oath between God and you, promising to surrender the city to our enemies unless the Lord turns and helps us within so many days.	11 Chi siete voi da tentare Dio?
12 Who are you, that have put God to the test this day, and are setting yourselves up in the place of God among the sons of men?	12 Questa non è una parola che ecciti la misericordia: provoca piuttosto l'ira ed accende il furore.
13 You are putting the Lord Almighty to the test--but you will never know anything!	13 Voi avete fissato un termine alla misericordia del Signore, a vostro arbitrio le avete fissato un giorno.
14 You cannot plumb the depths of the human heart, nor find out what a man is thinking; how do you expect to search out God, who made all these things, and find out his mind or comprehend his thought? No, my brethren, do not provoke the Lord our God to anger.	14 Ma ora, giacché il Signore è paziente, facciamo penitenza anche di questo, e imploriamo con abbondanza di lacrime la sua indulgenza;
15 For if he does not choose to help us within these five days, he has power to protect us within any time he pleases, or even to destroy us in the presence of our enemies.	15 chè Dio non minaccia come l'uomo, e non si accende di sdegno come il figlio dell'uomo.
16 Do not try to bind the purposes of the Lord our God; for God is not like man, to be threatened, nor like a human being, to be won over by pleading.	16 Or dunque umiliamo dinanzi a lui le nostre anime, e, servendo a lui collo spirito umiliato,
17 Therefore, while we wait for his deliverance, let us call upon him to help us, and he will hear our voice, if it pleases him.	17 diciamo colle lacrime al Signore che ci usi misericordia in quel modo che gli piace, in modo che, come abbiamo agitato il cuore per l'orgoglio degli (Assiri), così possiamo gloriarci della nostra umiliazione,
18 "For never in our generation, nor in these present days, has there been any tribe or family or people or city of ours which worshiped gods made with hands, as was done in days gone by--	18 noi, che non abbiamo imitato i peccati dei nostri padri, i quali abbandonarono il loro Dio per adorare gli dèi stranieri,
19 and that was why our fathers were handed over to the sword, and to be plundered, and so they suffered a great catastrophe before our enemies.	19 e per questo furono abbandonati alla spada, al saccheggio, alla confusione tra i loro nemici; noi, che fuori di lui non conosciamo altro Dio.
20 But we know no other god but him, and therefore we hope that he will not disdain us or any of our nation.	20 Aspettiamo umilmente la sua consolazione, ed egli vendicherà il nostro sangue dalle oppressioni dei nostri nemici, egli umilierà tutte le nazioni che insorgono contro di noi: il Signore Dio nostro le riricoprirà di confusione.
21 For if we are captured all Judea will be captured and our sanctuary will be plundered; and he will exact of us the penalty for its desecration.	21 Ed ora, fratelli, giacché voi siete gli anziani del popolo di Dio e da voi dipende la loro vita, rialzate colle vostre parole i loro cuori, e fate loro ricordare che i nostri padri furon tentati, perchè dessero a conoscere se veramente onorassero il loro Dio.
22 And the slaughter of our brethren and the captivity of the land and the desolation of our inheritance--all this he will bring upon our heads among the Gentiles, wherever we serve as slaves; and we shall be an offense and a reproach in the eyes of those who acquire us.	22 Dovrebbero ricordare come il nostro padre Abramo fu tentato e che attravèrso alla prova di molte tribolazioni divenne l'amico di Dio.
23 For our slavery will not bring us into favor, but the Lord our God will turn it to dishonor.	23 Così Isacco, cosi Giacobbe, così Mosè. Tutti quelli che piacquero a Dio passarono per molte tribolazioni, restando fedeli;
24 "Now therefore, brethren, let us set an example to our brethren, for their lives depend upon us, and the sanctuary and the temple and the altar rest upon us.	24 quelli poi che invece di accettare col timor del Signore la tentazione, proruppero in impazienze e in vergognose mormorazioni contro il Signore,
25 In spite of everything let us give thanks to the Lord our God, who is putting us to the test as he did our forefathers.	25 Furono sterminati dallo sterminatore e perirono morsi dai serpenti.
26 Remember what he did with Abraham, and how he tested Isaac, and what happened to Jacob in Mesopotamia in Syria, while he was keeping the sheep of Laban, his mother's brother.	26 Or dunque noi non andiamo in escandescenze per quel che soffriamo,
27 For he has not tried us with fire, as he did them, to search their hearts, nor has he taken revenge upon us; but the Lord scourges those who draw near to him, in order to admonish them."	27 ripensiamo invece che questi supplizi sono minori dei nostri peccati, e stiamo sicuri che i flagelli del Signore, coi quali siamo castigati come servi, ci son mandati per nostra emenda e non per nostra rovina ».
28 Then Uzziah said to her, "All that you have said has been spoken out of a true heart, and there is no one who can deny your words.	28 Allora Ozia e gli anziani le dissero: « Tutto quello che hai detto è vero, e non c'è che ridire nelle tue parole.
29 Today is not the first time your wisdom has been shown, but from the beginning of your life all the people have recognized your understanding, for your heart's disposition is right.	29 Or dunque prega per noi; chè sei una santa e temi Dio ».
30 But the people were very thirsty, and they compelled us to do for them what we have promised, and made us take an oath which we cannot break.	30 Giuditta disse loro: « Come avete riconosciuto che ciò che ho potuto dire viene da Dio,
31 So pray for us, since you are a devout woman, and the Lord will send us rain to fill our cisterns and we will no longer be faint."	31 ora provate se vien da Dio quello che ho risoluto di fare, e pregate che Dio confermi la mia risoluzione.
32 Judith said to them, "Listen to me. I am about to do a thing which will go down through all generations of our descendants.	32 Voi questa notte starete alla porta, ed io uscirò colla mia serva. Pregate perchè, come avete detto, entro cinque giorni il Signore rivolga lo sguardo sopra il suo popolo d'Israele.
33 Stand at the city gate tonight, and I will go out with my maid; and within the days after which you have promised to surrender the city to our enemies, the Lord will deliver Israel by my hand.	33 Però voglio che non cerchiate di sapere i fatti miei e che, fino a tanto che non ve ne porti notizie, non si faccia altro che pregare per me il Signore Dio nostro ».
34 Only, do not try to find out what I plan; for I will not tell you until I have finished what I am about to do."	34 Allora Ozia, principe di Giuda, le disse: « Va in pace, e il Signore sia teco a far vendetta dei nostri nemici ». Poi, lasciatala, se ne andarono.
35 Uzziah and the rulers said to her, "Go in peace, and may the Lord God go before you, to take revenge upon our enemies."
36 So they returned from the tent and went to their posts.
