1 When the disturbance made by the men outside the council died down, Holofernes, the commander of the Assyrian army, said to Achior and all the Moabites in the presence of all the foreign contingents:	1 Quand se fut apaisé le tumulte des gens attroupés autour du Conseil, Holopherne, général en chef del'armée d'Assur, invectiva Achior devant toute la foule des étrangers et les Ammonites:
2 "And who are you, Achior, and you hirelings of Ephraim, to prophesy among us as you have done today and tell us not to make war against the people of Israel because their God will defend them? Who is God except Nebuchadnezzar?	2 "Qui es-tu donc, Achior, toi avec les mercenaires d'Ephraïm, pour vaticiner chez nous comme tu lefais aujourd'hui et pour nous dissuader de partir en guerre contre la race d'Israël? Tu prétends que leur Dieu lesprotégera? Qui donc est dieu hormis Nabuchodonosor? C'est lui qui va envoyer sa puissance et les fairedisparaître de la face de la terre, et ce n'est pas leur Dieu qui les sauvera!
3 He will send his forces and will destroy them from the face of the earth, and their God will not deliver them--we the king's servants will destroy them as one man. They cannot resist the might of our cavalry.	3 Mais nous, ses serviteurs, nous les broierons comme un seul homme! Ils ne pourront contenir lapuissance de nos chevaux.
4 We will burn them up, and their mountains will be drunk with their blood, and their fields will be full of their dead. They cannot withstand us, but will utterly perish. So says King Nebuchadnezzar, the lord of the whole earth. For he has spoken; none of his words shall be in vain.	4 Nous les brûlerons pêle-mêle. Leurs monts s'enivreront de leur sang et leurs plaines seront rempliesde leurs cadavres. Loin de pouvoir tenir pied devant nous, ils périront du premier au dernier, dit le roiNabuchodonosor, le maître de toute la terre. Car il a parlé et ses paroles ne seront pas vaines.
5 "But you, Achior, you Ammonite hireling, who have said these words on the day of your iniquity, you shall not see my face again from this day until I take revenge on this race that came out of Egypt.	5 Toi donc, Achior, mercenaire ammonite, toi qui as proféré ce discours en un moment d'emportement,à partir d'aujourd'hui tu ne verras plus mon visage jusqu'au jour où je me serai vengé de cette engeance évadéed'Egypte.
6 Then the sword of my army and the spear of my servants shall pierce your sides, and you shall fall among their wounded, when I return.	6 Alors l'épée de mes soldats et la lance de mes serviteurs te transperceront le flanc. Tu tomberas parmiles blessés quand je me tournerai contre Israël.
7 Now my slaves are going to take you back into the hill country and put you in one of the cities beside the passes,	7 Mes serviteurs vont maintenant te mener dans la montagne et te laisser près d'une des villes situéesdans les défilés.
8 and you will not die until you perish along with them.	8 Tu ne périras pas sans partager leur ruine.
9 If you really hope in your heart that they will not be taken, do not look downcast! I have spoken and none of my words shall fail."	9 Ne prends pas cet air abattu si tu nourris le secret espoir qu'elles ne seront pas capturées! J'ai dit;aucune de mes paroles ne restera sans effet."
10 Then Holofernes ordered his slaves, who waited on him in his tent, to seize Achior and take him to Bethulia and hand him over to the men of Israel.	10 Holopherne ordonna aux gens de service dans sa tente de saisir Achior, de le mener à Béthulie et dele remettre aux mains des Israélites.
11 So the slaves took him and led him out of the camp into the plain, and from the plain they went up into the hill country and came to the springs below Bethulia.	11 Les serviteurs le prirent donc, le conduisirent hors du camp à travers la plaine et de là, prenant ladirection de la montagne, ils parvinrent aux sources situées en contrebas de Béthulie.
12 When the men of the city saw them, they caught up their weapons and ran out of the city to the top of the hill, and all the slingers kept them from coming up by casting stones at them.	12 Quand les hommes de la ville les virent, ils prirent leurs armes, sortirent de la cité et gagnèrent lacrête de la montagne, tandis que, pour les empêcher de monter, les frondeurs les criblaient de pierres.
13 However, they got under the shelter of the hill and they bound Achior and left him lying at the foot of the hill, and returned to their master.	13 Aussi purent-ils tout juste se glisser au bas des pentes, ligoter Achior et le laisser étendu au pied dela montagne avant de s'en retourner vers leur maître.
14 Then the men of Israel came down from their city and found him; and they untied him and brought him into Bethulia and placed him before the magistrates of their city,	14 Les Israélites descendirent alors de leur ville, s'arrêtèrent près de lui, le délièrent, le conduisirent àBéthulie et le présentèrent aux chefs de la cité,
15 who in those days were Uzziah the son of Micah, of the tribe of Simeon, and Chabris the son of Gothoniel, and Charmis the son of Melchiel.	15 qui étaient alors Ozias, fils de Michée, de la tribu de Siméon, Chabris, fils de Gothoniel, et Charmis,fils de Melchiel.
16 They called together all the elders of the city, and all their young men and their women ran to the assembly; and they set Achior in the midst of all their people, and Uzziah asked him what had happened.	16 Ceux-ci convoquèrent les anciens de la ville. Les jeunes gens et les femmes accoururent aussi àl'assemblée. Ozias interrogea Achior, debout au milieu du peuple, sur ce qui était arrivé.
17 He answered and told them what had taken place at the council of Holofernes, and all that he had said in the presence of the Assyrian leaders, and all that Holofernes had said so boastfully against the house of Israel.	17 Prenant la parole, il leur fit connaître les délibérations du conseil d'Holopherne, tout ce qu'il avaitlui-même dit parmi les chefs assyriens, ainsi que les rodomontades d'Holopherne à l'adresse de la maisond'Israël.
18 Then the people fell down and worshiped God, and cried out to him, and said,	18 Alors le peuple se prosterna, adora Dieu et cria:
19 "O Lord God of heaven, behold their arrogance, and have pity on the humiliation of our people, and look this day upon the faces of those who are consecrated to thee."	19 "Seigneur, Dieu du ciel, considère leur orgueil démesuré et prends en pitié l'humiliation de notrerace. En ce jour tourne un visage favorable vers ceux qui te sont consacrés."
20 Then they consoled Achior, and praised him greatly.	20 Puis on rassura Achior, vivement félicité.
21 And Uzziah took him from the assembly to his own house and gave a banquet for the elders; and all that night they called on the God of Israel for help.	21 Au sortir de la réunion, Ozias le prit chez lui et offrit un banquet aux anciens. Durant toute cettenuit-là on implora le secours du Dieu d'Israël.
