1 Then he commanded them to bring her in where his silver dishes were kept, and ordered them to set a table for her with some of his own food and to serve her with his own wine.	1 Il la fit ensuite introduire là où était disposée sa vaisselle d'argent, lui fit servir de ses mets et luidonna à boire de son vin.
2 But Judith said, "I cannot eat it, lest it be an offense; but I will be provided from the things I have brought with me."	2 Mais Judith: "Je me garderai bien d'en manger de peur que, pour moi, il n'y ait là une occasion defaute. Ce que j'ai apporté avec moi me suffira" --
3 Holofernes said to her, "If your supply runs out, where can we get more like it for you? For none of your people is here with us."	3 "Et si tes provisions viennent à manquer, comment pourrons-nous t'en procurer de semblables?Reprit Holopherne. Parmi nous il n'y a personne de ta race" --
4 Judith replied, "As your soul lives, my lord, your servant will not use up the things I have with me before the Lord carries out by my hand what he has determined to do."	4 "Vis en paix, Monseigneur! Moi, ta servante, je n'aurai pas consommé toutes mes provisions que leSeigneur n'ait accompli par moi ses desseins!"
5 Then the servants of Holofernes brought her into the tent, and she slept until midnight. Along toward the morning watch she arose	5 Les aides de camp d'Holopherne la conduisirent alors à sa tente où elle dormit jusqu'au milieu de lanuit. Quand approcha la veille de l'aurore, elle se leva.
6 and sent to Holofernes and said, "Let my lord now command that your servant be permitted to go out and pray."	6 Elle avait fait dire à Holopherne: "Que Monseigneur veuille bien ordonner de laisser sortir saservante pour la prière",
7 So Holofernes commanded his guards not to hinder her. And she remained in the camp for three days, and went out each night to the valley of Bethulia, and bathed at the spring in the camp.	7 de sorte qu'Holopherne avait prescrit à ses gardes de ne pas l'en empêcher. Elle demeura trois joursdans le camp. Elle sortait de nuit vers le ravin de Béthulie et se lavait à la source où se trouvait le poste de garde.
8 When she came up from the spring she prayed the Lord God of Israel to direct her way for the raising up of her people.	8 En remontant elle priait le Seigneur Dieu d'Israël de diriger son entreprise en vue du relèvement desfils de son peuple.
9 So she returned clean and stayed in the tent until she ate her food toward evening.	9 Une fois purifiée, elle revenait et se tenait dans sa tente jusqu'au moment où, le soir, on lui apportaitsa nourriture.
10 On the fourth day Holofernes held a banquet for his slave only, and did not invite any of his officers.	10 Le quatrième jour, Holopherne donna un banquet auquel il invita seulement ses officiers, noncompris ceux des services.
11 And he said to Bagoas, the eunuch who had charge of his personal affairs, "Go now and persuade the Hebrew woman who is in your care to join us and eat and drink with us.	11 Il dit à Bagoas, l'eunuque préposé à ses affaires: "Va donc persuader cette fille des Hébreux qui estchez toi de venir avec nous pour manger et boire en notre compagnie.
12 For it will be a disgrace if we let such a woman go without enjoying her company, for if we do not embrace her she will laugh at us."	12 Ce serait une honte pour nous de laisser partir une telle femme sans avoir eu commerce avec elle.Si nous ne réussissons pas à la décider, on rira bien de nous."
13 So Bagoas went out from the presence of Holofernes, and approached her and said, "This beautiful maidservant will please come to my lord and be honored in his presence, and drink wine and be merry with us, and become today like one of the daughters of the Assyrians who serve in the house of Nebuchadnezzar."	13 Bagoas sortit donc de chez Holopherne et entra chez Judith. "Cette jeune beauté daignerait-ellevenir sans tarder en présence de mon maître? Dit-il. Elle sera à la place d'honneur en face de lui, boira avec nousun vin joyeux, et deviendra aujourd'hui même comme l'une des filles des Assyriens qui se tiennent dans le palaisde Nabuchodonosor" --
14 And Judith said, "Who am I, to refuse my lord? Surely whatever pleases him I will do at once, and it will be a joy to me until the day of my death!"	14 "Qui suis-je donc, répondit Judith, pour m'opposer à Monseigneur? Tout ce qui sera agréable à sesyeux je le ferai avec empressement, et ce sera pour moi un sujet de joie jusqu'au jour de ma mort!"
15 So she got up and arrayed herself in all her woman's finery, and her maid went and spread on the ground for her before Holofernes the soft fleeces which she had received from Bagoas for her daily use, so that she might recline on them when she ate.	15 Elle se leva, se para de ses vêtements et de tous ses atours féminins. Sa servante la précéda etétendit par terre vis-à-vis d'Holopherne la toison que Bagoas avait donnée à Judith pour son usage journalier,afin qu'elle pût s'y étendre pour manger.
16 Then Judith came in and lay down, and Holofernes' heart was ravished with her and he was moved with great desire to possess her; for he had been waiting for an opportunity to deceive her, ever since the day he first saw her.	16 Judith entra et s'installa. Le coeur d'Holopherne en fut tout ravi et son esprit troublé. Il était saisid'un désir intense de s'unir à elle, car depuis le jour où il l'avait vue il guettait un moment favorable pour laséduire.
17 So Holofernes said to her. "Drink now, and be merry with us!"	17 Il lui dit: "Bois donc! Partage notre joie" --
18 Judith said, "I will drink now, my lord, because my life means more to me today than in all the days since I was born."	18 "Je bois volontiers, seigneur, car depuis ma naissance je n'ai jamais tant apprécié la viequ'aujourd'hui!"
19 Then she took and ate and drank before him what her maid had prepared.	19 Elle prit ce que lui avait préparé sa servante, puis mangea et but en face de lui.
20 And Holofernes was greatly pleased with her, and drank a great quantity of wine, much more than he had ever drunk in any one day since he was born.	20 Holopherne était sous son charme, aussi but-il une telle quantité de vin qu'en aucun jour de sa vie iln'en avait tant absorbé.
