Nehemiah 5

1 Now there arose a great outcry of the people and of their wives against their Jewish brethren.	1 OR vi fu un gran grido del popolo, e delle lor mogli, contro a’ Giudei lor fratelli.
2 For there were those who said, "With our sons and our daughters, we are many; let us get grain, that we may eat and keep alive."	2 E vi erano di quelli che dicevano: I nostri figliuoli, e le nostre figliuole, e noi siamo in gran numero; facciasi adunque che riceviamo del grano da mangiare, per vivere.
3 There were also those who said, "We are mortgaging our fields, our vineyards, and our houses to get grain because of the famine."	3 Altri vi erano che dicevano: Noi impegnammo i nostri campi, e le nostre vigne, e le nostre case; facciasi adunque che riceviamo del grano in questa carestia.
4 And there were those who said, "We have borrowed money for the king's tax upon our fields and our vineyards.	4 Altri vi erano che dicevano: Noi abbiamo presi in prestanza, sopra i nostri campi, e sopra le nostre vigne, danari, per pagare il tributo del re.
5 Now our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren, our children are as their children; yet we are forcing our sons and our daughters to be slaves, and some of our daughters have already been enslaved; but it is not in our power to help it, for other men have our fields and our vineyards."	5 Ed ora, benchè la nostra carne sia come la carne de’ nostri fratelli, e i nostri figliuoli sieno come i lor figliuoli; ecco, noi siamo in sul punto di mettere i nostri figliuoli e le nostre figliuole per servi; e già alcune delle nostre figliuole sono in servitù; e noi non abbiamo alcun modo in mano; e i nostri campi e le nostre vigne sono in mano di altri
6 I was very angry when I heard their outcry and these words.	6 E quando io ebbi udito il grido loro e queste parole, io mi crucciai forte.
7 I took counsel with myself, and I brought charges against the nobles and the officials. I said to them, "You are exacting interest, each from his brother." And I held a great assembly against them,	7 Ed avendo preso consiglio fra me stesso, sgridai gli uomini notabili ed i magistrati, e dissi loro: Riscotete voi così i debiti, ciascuno dal suo fratello? Ed io adunai contro a loro la gran raunanza.
8 and said to them, "We, as far as we are able, have bought back our Jewish brethren who have been sold to the nations; but you even sell your brethren that they may be sold to us!" They were silent, and could not find a word to say.	8 E dissi loro: Noi abbiamo, in quanto è stato in noi, riscattati i nostri fratelli Giudei che erano stati venduti alle genti; e voi vendereste ancora i vostri fratelli; o essi si venderebbero a noi! Allora essi si tacquero, e non sepper che dire.
9 So I said, "The thing that you are doing is not good. Ought you not to walk in the fear of our God to prevent the taunts of the nations our enemies?	9 Ed io dissi: Ciò che voi fate non è buono; non dovete voi camminar nel timor dell’Iddio nostro, per tema del vituperio delle genti nostre nemiche?
10 Moreover I and my brethren and my servants are lending them money and grain. Let us leave off this interest.	10 Io ancora, e i miei fratelli, e i miei servitori, abbiamo prestati a costoro danari, e grano; deh! rimettiamo loro questo debito.
11 Return to them this very day their fields, their vineyards, their olive orchards, and their houses, and the hundredth of money, grain, wine, and oil which you have been exacting of them."	11 Deh! rendete loro oggi i lor campi, le lor vigne, i loro uliveti, e le lor case; e rimettete loro la centesima de’ danari, del grano, del vino, e dell’olio, la quale voi riscotete da loro.
12 Then they said, "We will restore these and require nothing from them. We will do as you say." And I called the priests, and took an oath of them to do as they had promised.	12 Ed essi dissero: Noi la renderemo loro, e non domanderemo loro nulla; noi faremo così come tu dici. Allora io chiamai i sacerdoti, e li feci giurare che farebbero così.
13 I also shook out my lap and said, "So may God shake out every man from his house and from his labor who does not perform this promise. So may he be shaken out and emptied." And all the assembly said "Amen" and praised the LORD. And the people did as they had promised.	13 Oltre a ciò, io scossi il grembo della mia vesta, e dissi: Così scuota Iddio dalla sua propria casa, e dalle sue facoltà, chiunque non metterà questa parola ad effetto; e così sia scosso e vuoto. E tutta la raunanza disse: Così sia. E lodarono il Signore. E il popolo fece secondo quella parola
14 Moreover from the time that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, from the twentieth year to the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes the king, twelve years, neither I nor my brethren ate the food allowance of the governor.	14 Eziandio dal dì che il re mi ordinò per esser lor governatore nel paese di Giuda, cioè, dall’anno ventesimo del re Artaserse, fino all’anno trentaduesimo, che son dodici anni, io ed i miei fratelli non mangiammo della provvisione assegnata al governatore.
15 The former governors who were before me laid heavy burdens upon the people, and took from them food and wine, besides forty shekels of silver. Even their servants lorded it over the people. But I did not do so, because of the fear of God.	15 Benchè i precedenti governatori ch’erano stati davanti a me, avessero gravato il popolo, e avessero presa quella da lui, in pane ed in vino; e dipoi in quaranta sicli d’argento; e che anche i lor servitori avessero signoreggiato sopra il popolo; ma io non feci così, per lo timor di Dio.
16 I also held to the work on this wall, and acquired no land; and all my servants were gathered there for the work.	16 Ed anche io ristorai la parte mia in questo lavoro delle mura, e non acquistammo alcuna possessione; e tutti i miei servitori erano quivi adunati per l’opera.
17 Moreover there were at my table a hundred and fifty men, Jews and officials, besides those who came to us from the nations which were about us.	17 Oltre a ciò, cencinquant’uomini de’ Giudei e de’ magistrati, e quelli che venivano a noi dalle genti ch’erano d’intorno a noi, erano alla mia tavola.
18 Now that which was prepared for one day was one ox and six choice sheep; fowls likewise were prepared for me, and every ten days skins of wine in abundance; yet with all this I did not demand the food allowance of the governor, because the servitude was heavy upon this people.	18 Or quello che mi si apparecchiava per giorno era un bue e sei montoni scelti; mi si apparecchiava ancora dell’uccellame; e di dieci in dieci giorni queste cose si apparecchiavano con ogni sorta di vini copiosamente; e pure, con tutto ciò, io non domandai la provvisione assegnata al governatore; perciocchè quella servitù sarebbe stata grave a questo popolo.
19 Remember for my good, O my God, all that I have done for this people.	19 Ricordati, o Dio mio, di me in bene, per tutto quello che io ho fatto inverso questo popolo
