1 Naaman, commander of the army of the king of Syria, was a great man with his master and in high favor, because by him the LORD had given victory to Syria. He was a mighty man of valor, but he was a leper.	1 Naaman était le général de l’armée du roi d’Aram. C’était un homme très estimé de son maître; il était son favori car c’est par lui que Yahvé avait donné la victoire aux Araméens. Mais cet homme de valeur était lépreux.
2 Now the Syrians on one of their raids had carried off a little maid from the land of Israel, and she waited on Naaman's wife.	2 Or, au cours d’une sortie, les Araméens avaient ramené du pays d’Israël une adolescente qui entra au service de la femme de Naaman.
3 She said to her mistress, "Would that my lord were with the prophet who is in Samaria! He would cure him of his leprosy."	3 Elle dit à sa maîtresse: “Ah! Si mon maître allait trouver le prophète qui est à Samarie, il le délivrerait de sa lèpre.”
4 So Naaman went in and told his lord, "Thus and so spoke the maiden from the land of Israel."	4 Naaman informa son maître, il lui dit: “Voici ce qu’a dit cette jeune fille qui vient du pays d’Israël.”
5 And the king of Syria said, "Go now, and I will send a letter to the king of Israel." So he went, taking with him ten talents of silver, six thousand shekels of gold, and ten festal garments.	5 Le roi d’Aram lui dit: “Va, pars! Je vais te donner une lettre pour le roi d’Israël.” Il se mit donc en route, prit avec lui 10 talents d’argent, 6 000 pièces d’or et 10 habits de rechange.
6 And he brought the letter to the king of Israel, which read, "When this letter reaches you, know that I have sent to you Naaman my servant, that you may cure him of his leprosy."	6 Il fit remettre au roi d’Israël la lettre dans laquelle il était écrit: “Avec cette lettre, je t’envoie mon serviteur Naaman pour que tu le délivres de sa lèpre.”
7 And when the king of Israel read the letter, he rent his clothes and said, "Am I God, to kill and to make alive, that this man sends word to me to cure a man of his leprosy? Only consider, and see how he is seeking a quarrel with me."	7 À la lecture de la lettre, le roi d’Israël déchira ses habits et dit: “Suis-je donc comme Dieu pour faire mourir ou revivre? Celui-là me fait demander d’enlever à quelqu’un sa lèpre! Regardez et dites-moi si ce n’est pas simplement pour me chercher querelle.”
8 But when Elisha the man of God heard that the king of Israel had rent his clothes, he sent to the king, saying, "Why have you rent your clothes? Let him come now to me, that he may know that there is a prophet in Israel."	8 Élisée, l’homme de Dieu, apprit que le roi d’Israël avait déchiré ses vêtements; il envoya dire au roi: “Pourquoi as-tu déchiré tes vêtements? Qu’il vienne vers moi et il saura qu’il y a un prophète en Israël!”
9 So Naaman came with his horses and chariots, and halted at the door of Elisha's house.	9 Naaman vint donc avec ses chevaux et son char et se tint à la porte de la maison d’Élisée.
10 And Elisha sent a messenger to him, saying, "Go and wash in the Jordan seven times, and your flesh shall be restored, and you shall be clean."	10 Élisée lui fit dire par un messager: “Va te baigner sept fois dans le Jourdain, ta chair redeviendra comme auparavant et tu seras guéri.”
11 But Naaman was angry, and went away, saying, "Behold, I thought that he would surely come out to me, and stand, and call on the name of the LORD his God, and wave his hand over the place, and cure the leper.	11 Naaman se mit en colère et s’en alla; il disait: “Je pensais qu’il allait sortir en personne, qu’il invoquerait le nom de Yahvé son Dieu, qu’il frotterait de sa main l’endroit malade et me délivrerait de la lèpre.
12 Are not Abana and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? Could I not wash in them, and be clean?" So he turned and went away in a rage.	12 Les fleuves de Damas, l’Abana et le Parpar, ne sont-ils pas meilleurs que toutes les eaux d’Israël? Il me suffirait donc de m’y laver pour guérir!” Très en colère il fit demi-tour pour s’en aller.
13 But his servants came near and said to him, "My father, if the prophet had commanded you to do some great thing, would you not have done it? How much rather, then, when he says to you, 'Wash, and be clean'?"	13 Alors ses serviteurs s’approchèrent et lui dirent: “Mon père, si le prophète t’avait demandé quelque chose de difficile, tu l’aurais fait? Pourquoi ne le fais-tu pas quand il te dit seulement: Lave-toi et tu seras guéri!”
14 So he went down and dipped himself seven times in the Jordan, according to the word of the man of God; and his flesh was restored like the flesh of a little child, and he was clean.	14 Il descendit donc et se plongea dans le Jourdain: sept fois, comme l’avait dit l’homme de Dieu. Et puis sa chair redevint comme la chair d’un petit enfant: il était guéri!
15 Then he returned to the man of God, he and all his company, and he came and stood before him; and he said, "Behold, I know that there is no God in all the earth but in Israel; so accept now a present from your servant."	15 Alors il retourna chez l’homme de Dieu avec tous ses compagnons, il entra et se présenta devant lui: “Maintenant, dit-il, je sais qu’il n’y pas de Dieu sur toute la terre, sauf en Israël. Accepte donc ce présent de la part de ton serviteur.”
16 But he said, "As the LORD lives, whom I serve, I will receive none." And he urged him to take it, but he refused.	16 Élisée lui répondit: “Par la vie de Yahvé que je sers, je n’accepterai rien.” L’autre insista pour qu’il accepte, mais il refusa.
17 Then Naaman said, "If not, I pray you, let there be given to your servant two mules' burden of earth; for henceforth your servant will not offer burnt offering or sacrifice to any god but the LORD.	17 Alors Naaman lui dit: “Bien! Mais j’aimerais au moins qu’on donne à ton serviteur de la terre, de quoi charger une paire de mulets, car désormais ton serviteur n’offrira plus de sacrifices ni d’holocaustes à d’autres dieux qu’à Yahvé.
18 In this matter may the LORD pardon your servant: when my master goes into the house of Rimmon to worship there, leaning on my arm, and I bow myself in the house of Rimmon, when I bow myself in the house of Rimmon, the LORD pardon your servant in this matter."	18 Cependant, que Yahvé pardonne ceci à ton serviteur: Lorsque mon maître entre dans le temple de Rimmon pour s’y prosterner, il s’appuie sur mon bras et je me prosterne avec lui dans le temple de Rimmon. Que Yahvé daigne donc pardonner cela à ton serviteur.”
19 He said to him, "Go in peace." But when Naaman had gone from him a short distance,	19 Élisée lui dit: “Va en paix!” Il était déjà assez loin,
20 Gehazi, the servant of Elisha the man of God, said, "See, my master has spared this Naaman the Syrian, in not accepting from his hand what he brought. As the LORD lives, I will run after him, and get something from him."	20 lorsque Guéhazi, le serviteur d’Élisée, se dit en lui même: “Mon maître a été trop discret envers cet Araméen. Penser qu’il n’a rien accepté de ce que Naaman avait apporté! Par la vie de Yahvé, si je peux le rattraper, j’en tirerai quelque chose.”
21 So Gehazi followed Naaman. And when Naaman saw some one running after him, he alighted from the chariot to meet him, and said, "Is all well?"	21 Guéhazi se mit donc à la poursuite de Naaman, et Naaman l’aperçut qui courait derrière lui. Il sauta de son char et lui dit: “Tout va-t-il bien?”
22 And he said, "All is well. My master has sent me to say, 'There have just now come to me from the hill country of Ephraim two young men of the sons of the prophets; pray, give them a talent of silver and two festal garments.'"	22 Guéhazi répondit: “Tout va bien, mais mon maître m’a envoyé pour te dire: À l’instant, deux jeunes gens de la montagne d’Éphraïm, des frères prophètes, viennent d’arriver chez moi. Pourrais-tu me donner pour eux un talent d’argent et deux habits de rechange.”
23 And Naaman said, "Be pleased to accept two talents." And he urged him, and tied up two talents of silver in two bags, with two festal garments, and laid them upon two of his servants; and they carried them before Gehazi.	23 Naaman insista: “Accepte donc deux talents.” Il le força d’accepter et serra deux talents d’argent dans deux sacs avec les deux habits de rechange, puis il les confia à deux de ses serviteurs pour qu’ils les portent devant Guéhazi.
24 And when he came to the hill, he took them from their hand, and put them in the house; and he sent the men away, and they departed.	24 Lorsque Guéhazi arriva à l’Ophel, il prit le tout de leurs mains et le déposa dans la maison; il renvoya les hommes, et ceux-ci partirent.
25 He went in, and stood before his master, and Elisha said to him, "Where have you been, Gehazi?" And he said, "Your servant went nowhere."	25 Quant à lui, il rentra et se présenta devant son maître. Élisée lui dit: “D’où viens-tu, Guéhazi?” Il dit: “Ton serviteur est allé par-ci, par-là.”
26 But he said to him, "Did I not go with you in spirit when the man turned from his chariot to meet you? Was it a time to accept money and garments, olive orchards and vineyards, sheep and oxen, menservants and maidservants?	26 Élisée lui dit: “Mon esprit n’était-il pas avec toi lorsque cet homme a sauté de son char pour venir à ta rencontre? Te voilà donc avec l’argent, avec des vêtements, des oliviers, des vignes, des brebis, des bœufs, des serviteurs et des servantes!
27 Therefore the leprosy of Naaman shall cleave to you, and to your descendants for ever." So he went out from his presence a leper, as white as snow.	27 Et te voilà aussi avec la lèpre de Naaman: elle sera sur toi et sur ta famille pour toujours!” Et Guéhazi s’éloigna de lui avec une lèpre blanche comme la neige.
