1 After many days the word of the LORD came to Elijah, in the third year, saying, "Go, show yourself to Ahab; and I will send rain upon the earth."	1 Muito tempo depois dirigiu o Senhor a sua palavra a Elias, no terceiro ano, dizendo: Vai e apresenta-te diante de Acab, para eu fazer cair chuva sobre a terra.
2 So Elijah went to show himself to Ahab. Now the famine was severe in Samaria.	2 Partiu Elias, para se mostrar a Acab. Entretanto a fome era extrema em Samaria.
3 And Ahab called Obadiah, who was over the household. (Now Obadiah revered the LORD greatly;	3 Acab chamou Abdias, mordomo de sua casa. Abdias temia muito o Senhor,
4 and when Jezebel cut off the prophets of the LORD, Obadiah took a hundred prophets and hid them by fifties in a cave, and fed them with bread and water.)	4 porque, quando Jezabel matava os profetas do Senhor, ele (Abdias) tomou cem profetas e escondeu-os em cavernas, cinqüenta numa, e cinqüenta noutra, e sustentou-os com pão e água.
5 And Ahab said to Obadiah, "Go through the land to all the springs of water and to all the valleys; perhaps we may find grass and save the horses and mules alive, and not lose some of the animals."	5 Disse Acab a Abdias: Vai pelo país, pelas proximidades das fontes de água e das torrentes, a ver se podemos achar erva para salvar a vida aos cavalos e aos machos, evitando assim abater o nosso gado.
6 So they divided the land between them to pass through it; Ahab went in one direction by himself, and Obadiah went in another direction by himself.	6 E repartiram entre si o país para o percorrerem: Acab ia por um caminho, e Abdias, separadamente, ia por outro.
7 And as Obadiah was on the way, behold, Elijah met him; and Obadiah recognized him, and fell on his face, and said, "Is it you, my lord Elijah?"	7 Quando Abdias ia a caminho, Elias encontrou-se com ele. Abdias, tendo-o conhecido, prostrou-se com o rosto em terra e disse: És tu Elias, meu senhor?
8 And he answered him, "It is I. Go, tell your lord, 'Behold, Elijah is here.'"	8 Ele respondeu-lhe: Sou eu. Vai e dize a teu amo: Elias está aqui.
9 And he said, "Wherein have I sinned, that you would give your servant into the hand of Ahab, to kill me?	9 Abdias replicou: Que pecado cometi eu para me entregares nas mãos de Acab, a mim, teu servo, para ele me matar?
10 As the LORD your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom whither my lord has not sent to seek you; and when they would say, 'He is not here,' he would take an oath of the kingdom or nation, that they had not found you.	10 Viva o Senhor teu Deus, que não há nação nem reino, onde meu amo te não tenha mandado buscar. Respondendo-lhe todos: Não está aqui — fez jurar, um por um, a todos os reis e povos, que tu não tinhas sido encontrado.
11 And now you say, 'Go, tell your lord, "Behold, Elijah is here."'	11 E agora tu dizes-me: Vai e dize a teu amo: Elias está aqui!
12 And as soon as I have gone from you, the Spirit of the LORD will carry you whither I know not; and so, when I come and tell Ahab and he cannot find you, he will kill me, although I your servant have revered the LORD from my youth.	12 Quando eu me apartar de ti, o Espírito do Senhor te levará para um lugar que eu ignoro, e, então, indo eu informar Acab, se ele te não encontrar, me matará; ora o teu servo teme o Senhor desde a sua infância (não merecendo que o trates assim).
13 Has it not been told my lord what I did when Jezebel killed the prophets of the LORD, how I hid a hundred men of the LORD's prophets by fifties in a cave, and fed them with bread and water?	13 Porventura não foi dito a ti, meu senhor, o que eu fiz, quando Jezabel matava os profetas do Senhor, como escondi cem destes profetas do Senhor em cavernas, cinqüenta numa, e cinqüenta noutra, e os sustentei de pão e água?
14 And now you say, 'Go, tell your lord, "Behold, Elijah is here"'; and he will kill me."	14 E agora tu dizes: Vai e dize a teu amo: Elias está aqui! Ele me matará.
15 And Elijah said, "As the LORD of hosts lives, before whom I stand, I will surely show myself to him today."	15 Elias respondeu: Viva o Senhor dos exércitos, em cuja presença estou, que eu me apresentarei hoje diante dele.
16 So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him; and Ahab went to meet Elijah.	16 Abdias correu ao encontro de Acab e avisou-o, e Acab saiu a encontrar-se com Elias.
17 When Ahab saw Elijah, Ahab said to him, "Is it you, you troubler of Israel?"	17 Ao vê-lo, disse: Porventura és tu aquele que trazes perturbado Israel?
18 And he answered, "I have not troubled Israel; but you have, and your father's house, because you have forsaken the commandments of the LORD and followed the Baals.	18 Elias respondeu: Não sou eu que perturbei Israel, mas és tu e a casa de teu pai, por terdes deixado os mandamentos do Senhor e por terdes seguido Baal.
19 Now therefore send and gather all Israel to me at Mount Carmel, and the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal and the four hundred prophets of Asherah, who eat at Jezebel's table."	19 Não obstante, manda agora juntar todo o povo de Israel no monte Carmelo, com os quatrocentos e cinqüenta profetas de Baal, mais os quatrocentos profetas de Astarte, que comem à mesa de Jezabel.
20 So Ahab sent to all the people of Israel, and gathered the prophets together at Mount Carmel.	20 Mandou Acab chamar todos os filhos de Israel, e juntou os profetas no monte Carmelo.
21 And Elijah came near to all the people, and said, "How long will you go limping with two different opinions? If the LORD is God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him." And the people did not answer him a word.	21 Elias, aproximando-se de todo o povo, disse: Até quando claudicareis vós para os dois lados (inclinando-nos umas vezes para o Senhor e outras para Baal)? Se o Senhor é Deus, segui-o; se, porém, o é Baal, segui-o. O povo não lhe respondeu palavra.
22 Then Elijah said to the people, "I, even I only, am left a prophet of the LORD; but Baal's prophets are four hundred and fifty men.	22 Elias tornou a dizer ao povo: Eu sou o único que fiquei dos profetas do Senhor: mas os profetas de Baal chegam a quatrocentos e ciquenta homens.
23 Let two bulls be given to us; and let them choose one bull for themselves, and cut it in pieces and lay it on the wood, but put no fire to it; and I will prepare the other bull and lay it on the wood, and put no fire to it.	23 (Contudo) dêem-nos dois bois, e eles escolham para si um boi, façam-no em pedaços, ponham-no sobre a lenha, mas não lhe metam fogo por baixo; eu tomarei o outro boi e o porei sobre a lenha, mas também não lhe meterei fogo por baixo.
24 And you call on the name of your god and I will call on the name of the LORD; and the God who answers by fire, he is God." And all the people answered, "It is well spoken."	24 Invocai vós os nomes dos vossos deuses, e eu invocarei o nome do meu Senhor; o Deus que ouvir, mandando fogo, esse seja considerado o (verdadeiro) Deus. Todo o povo, respondendo, disse: Óptima proposta.
25 Then Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, "Choose for yourselves one bull and prepare it first, for you are many; and call on the name of your god, but put no fire to it."	25 Disse Elias aos profetas de Baal: Escolhei para vós um boi, e começai vós primeiro, porque sois em maior número; invocai os nomes dos vossos deuses, mas não ponhais fogo por baixo.
26 And they took the bull which was given them, and they prepared it, and called on the name of Baal from morning until noon, saying, "O Baal, answer us!" But there was no voice, and no one answered. And they limped about the altar which they had made.	26 Eles, tendo tom ado o boi que lhes foi dado, sacrificaram-no e invocaram o nome de Baal, desde manhã até ao meio dia, dizendo: Baal, ouve-nos. Mas não se percebia voz, nem havia quem respondesse, enquanto continuavam a saltar diante do altar que tinham feito.
27 And at noon Elijah mocked them, saying, "Cry aloud, for he is a god; either he is musing, or he has gone aside, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he is asleep and must be awakened."	27 Sendo já meio dia, Elias escarnecia-os, dizendo: Gritai mais alto, porque ele é (certamente) Deus, mas talvez esteja entretido a conversar, ou ocupado, ou em viagem, ou talvez durma e necessite que o acordem.
28 And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their custom with swords and lances, until the blood gushed out upon them.	28 Eles gritavam em alta voz, e retalhavam-se, segundo o seu costume, com canivetes e lancetas até se cobrirem de sangue.
29 And as midday passed, they raved on until the time of the offering of the oblation, but there was no voice; no one answered, no one heeded.	29 Passado o meio-dia, enquanto eles profetizavam, chegou o tempo em que era costume oferecer-se o sacrifício, e não se ouvia voz, nem havia quem respondesse, nem ouvisse os seus rogos.
30 Then Elijah said to all the people, "Come near to me"; and all the people came near to him. And he repaired the altar of the LORD that had been thrown down;	30 Disse então Elias a todo o povo: Aproximai-vos de mim. Aproximando-se o povo dele, Elias reparou o altar do Senhor, que tinha sido destruído.
31 Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the LORD came, saying, "Israel shall be your name";	31 Tomou doze pedras, segundo o número das tribos dos filhos de Jacob, a quem o Senhor dirigira a sua palavra, dizendo: Israel será o teu nome —
32 and with the stones he built an altar in the name of the LORD. And he made a trench about the altar, as great as would contain two measures of seed.	32 e com estas pedras edificou um altar em nome do Senhor. Em volta do altar fez um regueiro, com a capacidade de duas medidas de semente,
33 And he put the wood in order, and cut the bull in pieces and laid it on the wood. And he said, "Fill four jars with water, and pour it on the burnt offering, and on the wood."	33 acomodou a lenha, dividiu o boi em quartos, pô-lo sobre a lenha
34 And he said, "Do it a second time"; and they did it a second time. And he said, "Do it a third time"; and they did it a third time.	34 e disse: Enchei de água quatro talhas, e entornai-as sobre o holocausto e sobre a lenha, Disse outra vez: Fazei isto ainda segunda vez. Tendo-o eles feito segunda vez, disse: Fazei ainda terceira vez isto mesmo. E eles o fizeram terceira vez.
35 And the water ran round about the altar, and filled the trench also with water.	35 As águas corriam em volta do altar, e o regueiro encheu-se.
36 And at the time of the offering of the oblation, Elijah the prophet came near and said, "O LORD, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word.	36 Sendo já o tempo de se oferecer o holocausto, chegando-se o profeta Elias, disse: Senhor Deus de Abraão, de Isaac e de Israel, mostra hoje que és o Deus de Israel e que eu sou teu servo, e que por tua ordem fiz todas estas coisas.
37 Answer me, O LORD, answer me, that this people may know that thou, O LORD, art God, and that thou hast turned their hearts back."	37 Ouve-me, Senhor, ouve-me, para que este povo aprenda que tu és o Senhor Deus, e que converteste novamente o seu coração.
38 Then the fire of the LORD fell, and consumed the burnt offering, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.	38 Então, sùbitamente o fogo do Senhor baixou do céu e devorou o holocausto, a lenha e as pedras, consumindo o mesmo pó e a água que estava no regueiro.
39 And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces; and they said, "The LORD, he is God; the LORD, he is God."	39 Todo o povo, vendo isto, prostrou-se com o rosto em terra e disse: O Senhor é o Deus, o Senhor é o Deus.
40 And Elijah said to them, "Seize the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape." And they seized them; and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and killed them there.	40 Elias disse-lhes: Apanhai os profetas de Baal, e não escape deles nem um só. Tendo-os o povo agarrado, Elias levou-os à torrente de Cison e ali os matou.
41 And Elijah said to Ahab, "Go up, eat and drink; for there is a sound of the rushing of rain."	41 Elias disse a Acab: Vai, come e bebe, porque já se ouve o ruído duma grande chuva.
42 So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he bowed himself down upon the earth, and put his face between his knees.	42 Acab retirou-se a comer e beber: Elias, porém, subiu ao alto do Carmelo e, inclinado por terra, pôs o seu rosto entre os joelhos
43 And he said to his servant, "Go up now, look toward the sea." And he went up and looked, and said, "There is nothing." And he said, "Go again seven times."	43 e disse ao seu criado: Vai, e olha para a banda do mar. Tendo este ido, e tendo olhado, disse: Não há nada. Elias disse-lhe segunda vez: Torna a ir sete vezes.
44 And at the seventh time he said, "Behold, a little cloud like a man's hand is rising out of the sea." And he said, "Go up, say to Ahab, 'Prepare your chariot and go down, lest the rain stop you.'"	44 À sétima vez disse o servo: vejo uma pequena nuvem, como a palma da mão dum homem, que sobe do mar. Disse-lhe Elias: Vai e dize a Acab: Manda meter os cavalos no teu carro e corre, não te apanhe a chuva.
45 And in a little while the heavens grew black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode and went to Jezreel.	45 Num instante, se cobriu o céu de trevas, vieram nuvens e vento, e choveu copiosamente. Acab, entrando no seu carro, foi para Jezrael;
46 And the hand of the LORD was on Elijah; and he girded up his loins and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.	46 a mão (ou virtude) do Senhor foi sobre Elias, o qual, tendo cingido os rins, corria adiante de Acab, até chegar a Jezrael.
