1 After this David inquired of the LORD, "Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah?" And the LORD said to him, "Go up." David said, "To which shall I go up?" And he said, "To Hebron."	1 Dopo questi fatti, Davide consultò il Signore dicendo: "Devo andare in qualcuna delle città di Giuda?". Il Signore gli rispose: "Va'!". Chiese ancora Davide: "Dove andrò?". Rispose: "A Ebron".
2 So David went up there, and his two wives also, Ahino-am of Jezreel, and Abigail the widow of Nabal of Carmel.	2 Davide dunque andò là con le sue due mogli, Achinoàm di Izreèl e Abigail, già moglie di Nabal da Carmel.
3 And David brought up his men who were with him, every one with his household; and they dwelt in the towns of Hebron.	3 Davide portò con sé anche i suoi uomini, ognuno con la sua famiglia, e abitarono nella città di Ebron.
4 And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. When they told David, "It was the men of Jabesh-gilead who buried Saul,"	4 Vennero allora gli uomini di Giuda e qui unsero Davide re sulla casa di Giuda. Come fu noto a Davide che gli uomini di Iabes di Gàlaad avevano sepolto Saul,
5 David sent messengers to the men of Jabesh-gilead, and said to them, "May you be blessed by the LORD, because you showed this loyalty to Saul your lord, and buried him!	5 Davide inviò messaggeri agli uomini di Iabes di Gàlaad per dir loro: "Benedetti voi dal Signore, perché avete fatto quest'opera di misericordia al vostro Signore, a Saul, e gli avete dato sepoltura.
6 Now may the LORD show steadfast love and faithfulness to you! And I will do good to you because you have done this thing.	6 Vi renda dunque il Signore misericordia e fedeltà. Anch'io farò a voi del bene perché avete compiuto quest'opera.
7 Now therefore let your hands be strong, and be valiant; for Saul your lord is dead, and the house of Judah has anointed me king over them."	7 Ora riprendano coraggio le vostre mani e siate uomini forti. È morto Saul vostro signore, ma quelli della tribù di Giuda hanno unto me come re sopra di loro".
8 Now Abner the son of Ner, commander of Saul's army, had taken Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, and brought him over to Mahanaim;	8 Intanto Abner figlio di Ner, capo dell'esercito di Saul, prese Is-Bàal, figlio di Saul e lo condusse a Macanàim.
9 and he made him king over Gilead and the Ashurites and Jezreel and Ephraim and Benjamin and all Israel.	9 Poi lo costituì re su Gàlaad, sugli Asuriti, su Izreèl, su Èfraim e su Beniamino, cioè su tutto Israele.
10 Ish-bosheth, Saul's son, was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and he reigned two years. But the house of Judah followed David.	10 Is-Bàal, figlio di Saul, aveva quarant'anni quando fu fatto re di Israele e regnò due anni. Solo la casa di Giuda seguiva Davide.
11 And the time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months.	11 Il periodo di tempo durante il quale Davide fu re di Ebron fu di sette anni e sei mesi.
12 Abner the son of Ner, and the servants of Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, went out from Mahanaim to Gibeon.	12 Abner figlio di Ner e i ministri di Is-Bàal, figlio di Saul, si mossero da Macanàim verso Gàbaon.
13 And Joab the son of Zeruiah, and the servants of David, went out and met them at the pool of Gibeon; and they sat down, the one on the one side of the pool, and the other on the other side of the pool.	13 Anche Ioab, figlio di Zeruià, e i seguaci di Davide si mossero e li incontrarono presso la piscina di Gàbaon. Questi stavano presso la piscina da una parte e quelli dall'altra parte.
14 And Abner said to Joab, "Let the young men arise and play before us." And Joab said, "Let them arise."	14 Abner gridò a Ioab: "Potrebbero alzarsi i giovani e scontrarsi davanti a noi". Ioab rispose: "Si alzino pure".
15 Then they arose and passed over by number, twelve for Benjamin and Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, and twelve of the servants of David.	15 Si alzarono e sfilarono in rassegna: dodici dalla parte di Beniamino e di Is-Bàal figlio di Saul e dodici tra i seguaci di Davide.
16 And each caught his opponent by the head, and thrust his sword in his opponent's side; so they fell down together. Therefore that place was called Helkath-hazzurim, which is at Gibeon.	16 Ciascuno afferrò la testa dell'avversario e gli cacciò la spada nel fianco: così caddero tutti insieme e quel luogo fu chiamato Campo dei Fianchi, che si trova in Gàbaon.
17 And the battle was very fierce that day; and Abner and the men of Israel were beaten before the servants of David.	17 La battaglia divenne in quel giorno molto dura e furono sconfitti Abner e gli Israeliti dai seguaci di Davide.
18 And the three sons of Zeruiah were there, Joab, Abishai, and Asahel. Now Asahel was as swift of foot as a wild gazelle;	18 Vi erano là tre figli di Zeruià, Ioab, Abisài e Asaèl. Asaèl era veloce nella corsa come una gazzella selvatica.
19 and Asahel pursued Abner, and as he went he turned neither to the right hand nor to the left from following Abner.	19 Asaèl si era messo ad inseguire Abner e non deviava né a destra né a sinistra nell'inseguire Abner.
20 Then Abner looked behind him and said, "Is it you, Asahel?" And he answered, "It is I."	20 Abner si volse indietro e gli gridò: "Tu sei Asaèl?". Rispose: "Sì".
21 Abner said to him, "Turn aside to your right hand or to your left, and seize one of the young men, and take his spoil." But Asahel would not turn aside from following him.	21 Abner aggiunse: "Volgiti a destra o a sinistra, afferra qualcuno dei giovani e porta via le sue spoglie". Ma Asaèl non volle cessare di inseguirlo.
22 And Abner said again to Asahel, "Turn aside from following me; why should I smite you to the ground? How then could I lift up my face to your brother Joab?"	22 Abner tornò a dirgli: "Smetti di inseguirmi. Perché vuoi che ti stenda a terra? Come potrò alzare lo sguardo verso Ioab tuo fratello?".
23 But he refused to turn aside; therefore Abner smote him in the belly with the butt of his spear, so that the spear came out at his back; and he fell there, and died where he was. And all who came to the place where Asahel had fallen and died, stood still.	23 Ma siccome quegli non voleva saperne di ritirarsi, lo colpì con la punta della lancia al basso ventre, così che la lancia gli uscì di dietro ed egli cadde sul posto. Allora quanti arrivarono al luogo dove Asaèl era caduto e morto si fermarono.
24 But Joab and Abishai pursued Abner; and as the sun was going down they came to the hill of Ammah, which lies before Giah on the way to the wilderness of Gibeon.	24 Ma Ioab e Abisài inseguirono Abner, finché, al tramonto del sole, essi giunsero alla collina di Ammà, di fronte a Ghiach, sulla strada del deserto di Gàbaon.
25 And the Benjaminites gathered themselves together behind Abner, and became one band, and took their stand on the top of a hill.	25 I Beniaminiti si radunarono dietro Abner formando un gruppo compatto e si fermarono in cima ad una collina.
26 Then Abner called to Joab, "Shall the sword devour for ever? Do you not know that the end will be bitter? How long will it be before you bid your people turn from the pursuit of their brethren?"	26 Allora Abner gridò a Ioab: "Dovrà continuare per sempre la spada a divorare? Non sai che alla fine sarà una sventura? Quando finalmente darai ordine alla truppa di cessare l'inseguimento dei loro fratelli?".
27 And Joab said, "As God lives, if you had not spoken, surely the men would have given up the pursuit of their brethren in the morning."	27 Rispose Ioab: "Per la vita di Dio, se tu non avessi parlato così, nessuno della truppa avrebbe cessato fino al mattino di inseguire il proprio fratello".
28 So Joab blew the trumpet; and all the men stopped, and pursued Israel no more, nor did they fight any more.	28 Allora Ioab fece suonare la tromba e tutta la truppa si fermò e non inseguì più Israele e non combatté più.
29 And Abner and his men went all that night through the Arabah; they crossed the Jordan, and marching the whole forenoon they came to Mahanaim.	29 Abner e i suoi uomini marciarono per l'Araba tutta quella notte; passarono il Giordano, camminarono tutta la mattinata e arrivarono a Macanàim.
30 Joab returned from the pursuit of Abner; and when he had gathered all the people together, there were missing of David's servants nineteen men besides Asahel.	30 Ioab, tornato dall'inseguimento di Abner, radunò tutta la truppa. Degli uomini di Davide ne mancavano diciannove oltre Asaèl.
31 But the servants of David had slain of Benjamin three hundred and sixty of Abner's men.	31 Ma i servi di Davide avevano colpito e ucciso trecentosessanta uomini tra i Beniaminiti e la gente di Abner.
32 And they took up Asahel, and buried him in the tomb of his father, which was at Bethlehem. And Joab and his men marched all night, and the day broke upon them at Hebron.	32 Essi presero Asaèl e lo seppellirono nel sepolcro di suo padre, che è in Betlemme. Ioab e i suoi uomini marciarono tutta la notte; spuntava il giorno quando furono in Ebron.
