1 After this David inquired of the LORD, "Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah?" And the LORD said to him, "Go up." David said, "To which shall I go up?" And he said, "To Hebron."	1 Après cela David consulta Yahvé: “Monterai-je dans l’une des villes de Juda?” Yahvé répondit: “Monte.” David ajouta: “Où monterai-je?” Et Yahvé répondit: “À Hébron.”
2 So David went up there, and his two wives also, Ahino-am of Jezreel, and Abigail the widow of Nabal of Carmel.	2 David monta donc avec ses deux femmes, Ahinoam de Yizréel et Abigayil femme de Nabal de Karmel.
3 And David brought up his men who were with him, every one with his household; and they dwelt in the towns of Hebron.	3 David fit monter également ses compagnons d’armes, chacun avec sa famille, et ils s’installèrent dans les villes d’Hébron.
4 And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. When they told David, "It was the men of Jabesh-gilead who buried Saul,"	4 Alors les hommes de Juda se rassemblèrent, et là ils consacrèrent David comme roi sur la maison de Juda. On fit savoir à David que les gens de Yabech de Galaad avaient enterré Saül.
5 David sent messengers to the men of Jabesh-gilead, and said to them, "May you be blessed by the LORD, because you showed this loyalty to Saul your lord, and buried him!	5 Alors David envoya de ses hommes aux gens de Yabech de Galaad avec ce message: “Que Yahvé vous bénisse pour avoir enterré Saül, votre seigneur, pour lui avoir montré ainsi votre attachement.
6 Now may the LORD show steadfast love and faithfulness to you! And I will do good to you because you have done this thing.	6 Que Yahvé vous montre sa bonté et sa fidélité: moi aussi je vous revaudrai cette belle action.
7 Now therefore let your hands be strong, and be valiant; for Saul your lord is dead, and the house of Judah has anointed me king over them."	7 Mais ne vous lamentez plus sur la mort de Saül votre seigneur, sachez que les hommes de la maison de Juda m’ont consacré comme roi à leur tête.”
8 Now Abner the son of Ner, commander of Saul's army, had taken Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, and brought him over to Mahanaim;	8 Abner, fils de Ner, était chef de l’armée de Saül. Il emmena Ichbaal, le fils de Saül, et le fit passer à Mahanayim.
9 and he made him king over Gilead and the Ashurites and Jezreel and Ephraim and Benjamin and all Israel.	9 Là il l’établit comme roi de Galaad, de la tribu d’Asher, de Yizréel, Éphraïm et Benjamin: en un mot, de tout Israël.
10 Ish-bosheth, Saul's son, was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and he reigned two years. But the house of Judah followed David.	10 Ichbaal, fils de Saül, avait 40 ans lorsqu’il devint roi d’Israël et il régna deux ans, tandis que la maison de Juda suivait David.
11 And the time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months.	11 David régna à Hébron sur la maison de Juda durant 7 ans et 6 mois.
12 Abner the son of Ner, and the servants of Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, went out from Mahanaim to Gibeon.	12 Abner fils de Ner et la garde d’Ichbaal fils de Saül quittèrent Mahanayim pour se rendre à Gabaon.
13 And Joab the son of Zeruiah, and the servants of David, went out and met them at the pool of Gibeon; and they sat down, the one on the one side of the pool, and the other on the other side of the pool.	13 Joab fils de Sérouya et la garde de David se mirent également en route, et les deux troupes se rencontrèrent près de l’étang de Gabaon. Les premiers s’arrêtèrent d’un côté de l’étang, les autres de l’autre côté.
14 And Abner said to Joab, "Let the young men arise and play before us." And Joab said, "Let them arise."	14 Abner dit à Joab: “Que les jeunes gens se lèvent et luttent devant nous.” Joab répondit: “D’accord, qu’ils se lèvent.”
15 Then they arose and passed over by number, twelve for Benjamin and Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, and twelve of the servants of David.	15 Ils se levèrent et on les dénombra: il y en avait 12 de la tribu de Benjamin pour Ichbaal fils de Saül, et 12 de la garde de David.
16 And each caught his opponent by the head, and thrust his sword in his opponent's side; so they fell down together. Therefore that place was called Helkath-hazzurim, which is at Gibeon.	16 Chacun saisit son adversaire par la tête et lui enfonça son épée dans le côté, si bien qu’ils tombèrent tous ensemble. On a appelé cet endroit le Champ des Côtés, il se trouve à côté de Gabaon.
17 And the battle was very fierce that day; and Abner and the men of Israel were beaten before the servants of David.	17 Ce jour-là il y eut une très dure bataille, Abner et les gens d’Israël furent battus par la garde de David.
18 And the three sons of Zeruiah were there, Joab, Abishai, and Asahel. Now Asahel was as swift of foot as a wild gazelle;	18 Les trois fils de Sérouya étaient là: Joab, Abisaï et Azaël. Or Azaël était rapide à la course comme une gazelle sauvage,
19 and Asahel pursued Abner, and as he went he turned neither to the right hand nor to the left from following Abner.	19 il se lança à la poursuite d’Abner sans s’écarter ni à droite ni à gauche.
20 Then Abner looked behind him and said, "Is it you, Asahel?" And he answered, "It is I."	20 Abner se retourna et lui dit: “C’est toi Azaël?” Il répondit: “Oui, c’est moi.”
21 Abner said to him, "Turn aside to your right hand or to your left, and seize one of the young men, and take his spoil." But Asahel would not turn aside from following him.	21 Alors Abner lui dit: “Écarte-toi à droite ou à gauche et lance-toi sur l’un de ces jeunes, si tu veux prendre son équipement.” Mais Azaël ne voulut pas s’écarter de lui.
22 And Abner said again to Asahel, "Turn aside from following me; why should I smite you to the ground? How then could I lift up my face to your brother Joab?"	22 Abner répéta à Azaël: “Écarte-toi de moi, sinon je te laisse sur le sol; mais comment pourrais-je ensuite parler à ton frère?”
23 But he refused to turn aside; therefore Abner smote him in the belly with the butt of his spear, so that the spear came out at his back; and he fell there, and died where he was. And all who came to the place where Asahel had fallen and died, stood still.	23 Comme il refusait de s’écarter, Abner le frappa au ventre avec la pointe de sa lance et la lance lui ressortit par le dos: il tomba là et mourut sur place. Tous ensuite s’arrêtèrent à mesure qu’ils arrivaient à l’endroit où Azaël était tombé mort.
24 But Joab and Abishai pursued Abner; and as the sun was going down they came to the hill of Ammah, which lies before Giah on the way to the wilderness of Gibeon.	24 Joab et Abisaï se lancèrent à la poursuite d’Abner et, lorsque le soleil se couchait, ils arrivèrent à la colline d’Amma, à l’est de Giah sur le chemin du désert de Gabaon.
25 And the Benjaminites gathered themselves together behind Abner, and became one band, and took their stand on the top of a hill.	25 Les gens de Benjamin se groupèrent alors derrière Abner en formation serrée, et ils s’arrêtèrent au sommet d’une colline.
26 Then Abner called to Joab, "Shall the sword devour for ever? Do you not know that the end will be bitter? How long will it be before you bid your people turn from the pursuit of their brethren?"	26 Abner interpella Joab: “L’épée dévorera-t-elle toujours, ne sais-tu pas que cela finira dans les larmes? Qu’attends-tu pour ordonner à tes hommes de cesser de poursuivre leurs frères?”
27 And Joab said, "As God lives, if you had not spoken, surely the men would have given up the pursuit of their brethren in the morning."	27 Joab répondit: “Aussi vrai que Yahvé est vivant, si tu n’avais pas parlé, c’est jusqu’au matin que ces gens auraient poursuivi leurs frères.”
28 So Joab blew the trumpet; and all the men stopped, and pursued Israel no more, nor did they fight any more.	28 Alors Joab fit sonner du cor et toute l’armée s’arrêta, on cessa de poursuivre Israël et le combat finit.
29 And Abner and his men went all that night through the Arabah; they crossed the Jordan, and marching the whole forenoon they came to Mahanaim.	29 Abner et ses hommes marchèrent par la Araba durant toute la nuit, ils traversèrent le Jourdain et, après avoir marché toute une matinée encore, ils arrivèrent à Mahanayim.
30 Joab returned from the pursuit of Abner; and when he had gathered all the people together, there were missing of David's servants nineteen men besides Asahel.	30 Joab, de son côté, avait rassemblé ses troupes après avoir mis fin à la poursuite d’Abner; la garde de David avait perdu 19 hommes en plus d’Azaël,
31 But the servants of David had slain of Benjamin three hundred and sixty of Abner's men.	31 mais elle avait tué à ceux de Benjamin, dans l’armée d’Abner, 360 hommes.
32 And they took up Asahel, and buried him in the tomb of his father, which was at Bethlehem. And Joab and his men marched all night, and the day broke upon them at Hebron.	32 On emporta Azaël et on l’enterra dans le tombeau de son père à Bethléem. Joab et ses hommes marchèrent toute la nuit et ils arrivèrent à Hébron au lever du jour.
