1 Now Joab the son of Zeruiah perceived that the king's heart went out to Absalom.	1 Or Gioab figlio di Sarvia, accortosi che il cuore del re si piegava verso Assalonne,
2 And Joab sent to Tekoa, and fetched from there a wise woman, and said to her, "Pretend to be a mourner, and put on mourning garments; do not anoint yourself with oil, but behave like a woman who has been mourning many days for the dead;	2 mandò a Tecua, e fatta venire di là una donna scaltra, le disse: « Fingi d'essere in lutto, prendi una veste di duolo, non ti ungere d'olio, per sembrar una donna che da molto tempo piange un morto:
3 and go to the king, and speak thus to him." So Joab put the words in her mouth.	3 così entra dal re e digli queste cose ». E Gioab le pose le parole in bocca.
4 When the woman of Tekoa came to the king, she fell on her face to the ground, and did obeisance, and said, "Help, O king."	4 Essendo adunque la donna di Tecua entrata dal re, si gettò per terra dinanzi a lui, lo adorò e disse: « Salvami, o re ».
5 And the king said to her, "What is your trouble?" She answered, "Alas, I am a widow; my husband is dead.	5 Il re le disse: « Che hai da dire? » Ed essa rispose: « Ah! Io son vedova, mio marito è morto,
6 And your handmaid had two sons, and they quarreled with one another in the field; there was no one to part them, and one struck the other and killed him.	6 Or la tua serva aveva due figli, i quali son venuti a contesa fra loro in un campo, e non v'era nessuno a separarli, e uno ha percosso l'altro e l'ha ucciso.
7 And now the whole family has risen against your handmaid, and they say, 'Give up the man who struck his brother, that we may kill him for the life of his brother whom he slew'; and so they would destroy the heir also. Thus they would quench my coal which is left, and leave to my husband neither name nor remnant upon the face of the earth."	7 E ora tutta la parentela s'è levata contro la tua serva a dire: Dacci il fratricida, che lo facciamo morire per la vita del fratello che ha ucciso e così distruggiamo l'erede. Essi cercano di estinguere la scintilla che m'è rimasta, affinchè a mio marito non resti nè un nome nè altra cosa sulla terra ».
8 Then the king said to the woman, "Go to your house, and I will give orders concerning you."	8 Il re disse alla donna: «Vattene a casa tua, ed io darò degli ordini a tuo riguardo ».
9 And the woman of Tekoa said to the king, "On me be the guilt, my lord the king, and on my father's house; let the king and his throne be guiltless."	9 Ma la donna di Tecua disse al re: « O re mio signore, la colpa cada sopra di me e sopra la casa di mio padre; ma il re e il suo trono siano innocenti ».
10 The king said, "If any one says anything to you, bring him to me, and he shall never touch you again."	10 E il re a lei: « Se alcuno t'inquietasse, fallo venire da me, e non avrà più ardire di toccarti ».
11 Then she said, "Pray let the king invoke the LORD your God, that the avenger of blood slay no more, and my son be not destroyed." He said, "As the LORD lives, not one hair of your son shall fall to the ground."	11 Essa disse: « Faccia il re menzione del Signore suo Dio, affinchè non si moltiplichino i vendicatori del sangue, per far vendetta e uccidere il mio figlio ». Egli le disse: « Viva il Signore! non cadrà a terra uno dei capelli del tuo figlio ».
12 Then the woman said, "Pray let your handmaid speak a word to my lord the king." He said, "Speak."	12 Ma la donna riprese a dire: « Permetti alla tua serva di dire una parola al mio signore ». Ed egli disse: « Parla ».
13 And the woman said, "Why then have you planned such a thing against the people of God? For in giving this decision the king convicts himself, inasmuch as the king does not bring his banished one home again.	13 La donna soggiunse: « Perchè hai pensata una cosa simile contro il popolo di Dio, e perchè il re ha detta questa parola, per dichiararsi colpevole, non richiamando colui che egli ha cacciato?
14 We must all die, we are like water spilt on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again; but God will not take away the life of him who devises means not to keep his banished one an outcast.	14 Tutti moriamo, e dileguiamo sulla terra come acqua che non torna più; Dio non vuole che un'anima perisca; ma temporeggia, operando in modo che non perisca del tutto il discacciato.
15 Now I have come to say this to my lord the king because the people have made me afraid; and your handmaid thought, 'I will speak to the king; it may be that the king will perform the request of his servant.	15 Or io son venuta a dire al re mio signore questa parola in presenza del popolo. La tua serva ha detto: Ne parlerò al re, e può darsi che il re compia la parola della sua serva.
16 For the king will hear, and deliver his servant from the hand of the man who would destroy me and my son together from the heritage of God.'	16 Ora il re m'ha esaudita, ed ha liberata la sua serva dalle mani di tutti coloro che volevano sterminar me e il mio figlio dall'eredità di Dio.
17 And your handmaid thought, 'The word of my lord the king will set me at rest'; for my lord the king is like the angel of God to discern good and evil. The LORD your God be with you!"	17 Dica adunque la tua serva che la parola del re mio signore sia qual sacrifizio. Il re mio signore è come un angelo di Dio che non si commuove, nè per benedizioni nè per maledizioni, e per questo il Signore Dio tuo è con te ».
18 Then the king answered the woman, "Do not hide from me anything I ask you." And the woman said, "Let my lord the king speak."	18 Ma il re, presa la parola, disse alla donna: « Non mi celar niente di ciò che ti dimanderò ». E la donna disse: « Parla, o re mio signore ».
19 The king said, "Is the hand of Joab with you in all this?" The woman answered and said, "As surely as you live, my lord the king, one cannot turn to the right hand or to the left from anything that my lord the king has said. It was your servant Joab who bade me; it was he who put all these words in the mouth of your handmaid.	19 E il re a lei: «Non è forse con te la mano di Gioab in tutto questo? » La donna, rispondendo, disse: « Per la salute dell'anima tua, o re mio signore, nulla di tutto ciò che ha detto il re mio signore è a destra o a sinistra; infatti il tuo stesso servo Gioab dette gli ordini e mise in bocca della tua serva queste parole.
20 In order to change the course of affairs your servant Joab did this. But my lord has wisdom like the wisdom of the angel of God to know all things that are on the earth."	20 Ii tuo servo Gioab mi ingiunse di trasformare così l'aspetto del fatto; ma tu, o re mio signore, sei saggio come un angelo di Dio, per conoscere tutte le cose sulla terra ».
21 Then the king said to Joab, "Behold now, I grant this; go, bring back the young man Absalom."	21 Allora il re disse a Gioab: « Ecco che, placato, compio la tua parola: va adunque e richiama il giovane Assalonne ».
22 And Joab fell on his face to the ground, and did obeisance, and blessed the king; and Joab said, "Today your servant knows that I have found favor in your sight, my lord the king, in that the king has granted the request of his servant."	22 Gioab, prostratosi bocconi per terra, adorò, benedisse il re e disse: « Oggi il tuo servo ha riconosciuto d'aver trovata grazia ai tuoi occhi, o re mio signore, perchè hai compiuta la parola del tuo servo ».
23 So Joab arose and went to Geshur, and brought Absalom to Jerusalem.	23 Or Gioab, levatosi, andò a Gessur e condusse Assalonne a Gerusalemme.
24 And the king said, "Let him dwell apart in his own house; he is not to come into my presence." So Absalom dwelt apart in his own house, and did not come into the king's presence.	24 Ma il re disse: « Torni a casa sua, e non vegga la mia faccia ». Assalonne tornò a casa sua e non vide la faccia del re.
25 Now in all Israel there was no one so much to be praised for his beauty as Absalom; from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head there was no blemish in him.	25 In tutto Israele non v'era nessuno così bello e avvenente oltre ogni dire come Assalonne: dalla pianta dei piedi fino al vertice del capo non vi era in lui alcun difetto:
26 And when he cut the hair of his head (for at the end of every year he used to cut it; when it was heavy on him, he cut it), he weighed the hair of his head, two hundred shekels by the king's weight.	26 e quando si tagliava i capelli (il che faceva una volta all'anno, perchè la capigliatura lo incomodava), egli pesava i capelli della sua testa con duecento sicli, al peso pubblico.
27 There were born to Absalom three sons, and one daughter whose name was Tamar; she was a beautiful woman.	27 Assalonne ebbe tre figli ed una figlia, chiamata Tamar, la quale era bellissima.
28 So Absalom dwelt two full years in Jerusalem, without coming into the king's presence.	28 Assalonne dimorò in Gerusalemme, ma senza vedere la faccia del re.
29 Then Absalom sent for Joab, to send him to the king; but Joab would not come to him. And he sent a second time, but Joab would not come.	29 Fece pertanto chiamare Gioab, per mandarlo dal re; ma Gioab non volle andar da lui. Lo fece chiamare una seconda volta, e siccome Gioab non andava,
30 Then he said to his servants, "See, Joab's field is next to mine, and he has barley there; go and set it on fire." So Absalom's servants set the field on fire.	30 disse ai suoi servi: « Sapete bene che il campo di Gioab, vicino al mio campo, ha l'orzo da mietere, or dunque andate e mettetevi il fuoco ». I servi di Assalonne misero a fuoco il campo. Allora i servi di Gioab, stracciatesi le vesti, andarono da lui, a dirgli: « I servi di Assalonne han dato alle fiamme una parte del tuo campo ».
31 Then Joab arose and went to Absalom at his house, and said to him, "Why have your servants set my field on fire?"	31 Allora Gioab si mosse e andò alla casa di Assalonne, a dire: « Perchè i tuoi servi han dato fuoco alla mia messe? »
32 Absalom answered Joab, "Behold, I sent word to you, 'Come here, that I may send you to the king, to ask, "Why have I come from Geshur? It would be better for me to be there still." Now therefore let me go into the presence of the king; and if there is guilt in me, let him kill me.'"	32 Assalonne rispose a Gioab: « Mandai a pregarti di venire da me per inviarti dal re a dirgli: Perchè io son venuto da Gessur? Per me era meglio esserci ancora. Chiedo di poter vedere la faccia del re: e, se egli si ricorda della mia iniquità, mi faccia morire ».
33 Then Joab went to the king, and told him; and he summoned Absalom. So he came to the king, and bowed himself on his face to the ground before the king; and the king kissed Absalom.	33 Gioab andò dal re e gli riferì ogni cosa. Assalonne fu richiamato, entrò dal re e si prostrò bocconi per terra dinanzi a lui; e il re baciò Assalonne.
