Genesis 32

1 Jacob went on his way and the angels of God met him;	1 Levé de bon matin, Laban embrassa ses petits-enfants et ses filles et les bénit. Puis Laban partit etretourna chez lui.
2 and when Jacob saw them he said, "This is God's army!" So he called the name of that place Mahanaim.	2 Comme Jacob poursuivait son chemin, des anges de Dieu l'affrontèrent.
3 And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother in the land of Seir, the country of Edom,	3 En les voyant, Jacob dit: "C'est le camp de Dieu!" et il donna à ce lieu le nom de Mahanayim.
4 instructing them, "Thus you shall say to my lord Esau: Thus says your servant Jacob, 'I have sojourned with Laban, and stayed until now;	4 Jacob envoya au-devant de lui des messagers à son frère Esaü, au pays de Séïr, la steppe d'Edom.
5 and I have oxen, asses, flocks, menservants, and maidservants; and I have sent to tell my lord, in order that I may find favor in your sight.'"	5 Il leur donna cet ordre: "Ainsi parlerez-vous à Monseigneur Esaü: Voici le message de tonserviteur Jacob: J'ai séjourné chez Laban et je m'y suis attardé jusqu'à maintenant.
6 And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, "We came to your brother Esau, and he is coming to meet you, and four hundred men with him."	6 J'ai acquis bœufs et ânes, petit bétail, serviteurs et servantes. Je veux en faire porter la nouvelle àMonseigneur, pour trouver grâce à ses yeux."
7 Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed; and he divided the people that were with him, and the flocks and herds and camels, into two companies,	7 Les messagers revinrent auprès de Jacob en disant: "Nous sommes allés vers ton frère Esaü. Lui-même vient maintenant à ta rencontre et il a 400 hommes avec lui."
8 thinking, "If Esau comes to the one company and destroys it, then the company which is left will escape."	8 Jacob eut grand peur et se sentit angoissé. Alors il divisa en deux camps les gens qui étaient aveclui, le petit et le gros bétail.
9 And Jacob said, "O God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, O LORD who didst say to me, 'Return to your country and to your kindred, and I will do you good,'	9 se dit: "Si Esaü se dirige vers l'un des camps et l'attaque, le camp qui reste pourra se sauver."
10 I am not worthy of the least of all the steadfast love and all the faithfulness which thou hast shown to thy servant, for with only my staff I crossed this Jordan; and now I have become two companies.	10 Jacob dit: "Dieu de mon père Abraham et Dieu de mon père Isaac, Yahvé, qui m'as commandé:Retourne dans ton pays et dans ta patrie et je te ferai du bien,
11 Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau, for I fear him, lest he come and slay us all, the mothers with the children.	11 je suis indigne de toutes les faveurs et de toute la bonté que tu as eues pour ton serviteur. Jen'avais que mon bâton pour passer le Jourdain que voici, et maintenant je puis former deux camps.
12 But thou didst say, 'I will do you good, and make your descendants as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.'"	12 Veuille me sauver de la main de mon frère Esaü, car j'ai peur de lui, qu'il ne vienne et ne nousfrappe, la mère avec les enfants.
13 So he lodged there that night, and took from what he had with him a present for his brother Esau,	13 Pourtant, c'est toi qui as dit: Je te comblerai de bienfaits et je rendrai ta descendance comme lesable de la mer, qu'on ne peut pas compter, tant il y en a."
14 two hundred she-goats and twenty he-goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams,	14 Et Jacob passa la nuit en cet endroit. De ce qu'il avait en mains, il prit de quoi faire un présent àson frère Esaü:
15 thirty milch camels and their colts, forty cows and ten bulls, twenty she-asses and ten he-asses.	15 deux chèvres et vingt boucs, 200 brebis et vingt béliers,
16 These he delivered into the hand of his servants, every drove by itself, and said to his servants, "Pass on before me, and put a space between drove and drove."	16 30 chamelles qui allaitaient, avec leurs petits, 40 vaches et dix taureaux, vingt ânesses et dixânons.
17 He instructed the foremost, "When Esau my brother meets you, and asks you, 'To whom do you belong? Where are you going? And whose are these before you?'	17 Il les confia à ses serviteurs, chaque troupeau à part, et il dit à ses serviteurs: "Passez devant moiet laissez du champ entre les troupeaux."
18 then you shall say, 'They belong to your servant Jacob; they are a present sent to my lord Esau; and moreover he is behind us.'"	18 Au premier il donna cet ordre: "Lorsque mon frère Esaü te rencontrera et te demandera: A qui es-tu? Où vas-tu? A qui appartient ce qui est devant toi?
19 He likewise instructed the second and the third and all who followed the droves, "You shall say the same thing to Esau when you meet him,	19 Tu répondras: C'est à ton serviteur Jacob, c'est un présent envoyé à Monseigneur Esaü, et lui-même arrive derrière nous."
20 and you shall say, 'Moreover your servant Jacob is behind us.'" For he thought, "I may appease him with the present that goes before me, and afterwards I shall see his face; perhaps he will accept me."	20 Il donna le même ordre au second et au troisième et à tous ceux qui marchaient derrière lestroupeaux: "Voilà, leur dit-il, comment vous parlerez à Esaü quand vous le trouverez,
21 So the present passed on before him; and he himself lodged that night in the camp.	21 et vous direz: Et même, ton serviteur Jacob arrive derrière nous." Il s'était dit en effet: "Je me leconcilierai par un présent qui me précédera, ensuite je me présenterai à lui, peut-être me fera-t-il grâce."
22 The same night he arose and took his two wives, his two maids, and his eleven children, and crossed the ford of the Jabbok.	22 Le présent passa en avant et lui-même demeura cette nuit-là au camp.
23 He took them and sent them across the stream, and likewise everything that he had.	23 Cette même nuit, il se leva, prit ses deux femmes, ses deux servantes, ses onze enfants et passa legué du Yabboq.
24 And Jacob was left alone; and a man wrestled with him until the breaking of the day.	24 Il les prit et leur fit passer le torrent, et il fit passer aussi tout ce qu'il possédait.
25 When the man saw that he did not prevail against Jacob, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and Jacob's thigh was put out of joint as he wrestled with him.	25 Et Jacob resta seul. Et quelqu'un lutta avec lui jusqu'au lever de l'aurore.
26 Then he said, "Let me go, for the day is breaking." But Jacob said, "I will not let you go, unless you bless me."	26 Voyant qu'il ne le maîtrisait pas, il le frappa à l'emboîture de la hanche, et la hanche de Jacob sedémit pendant qu'il luttait avec lui.
27 And he said to him, "What is your name?" And he said, "Jacob."	27 Il dit: "Lâche-moi, car l'aurore est levée", mais Jacob répondit: "Je ne te lâcherai pas, que tu nem'aies béni."
28 Then he said, "Your name shall no more be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with men, and have prevailed."	28 Il lui demanda: "Quel est ton nom" -- "Jacob", répondit-il.
29 Then Jacob asked him, "Tell me, I pray, your name." But he said, "Why is it that you ask my name?" And there he blessed him.	29 Il reprit: "On ne t'appellera plus Jacob, mais Israël, car tuas été fort contre Dieu et contre leshommes et tu l'as emporté."
30 So Jacob called the name of the place Peniel, saying, "For I have seen God face to face, and yet my life is preserved."	30 Jacob fit cette demande: "Révèle-moi ton nom, je te prie", mais il répondit: "Et pourquoi medemandes-tu mon nom?" Et, là même, il le bénit.
31 The sun rose upon him as he passed Penuel, limping because of his thigh.	31 Jacob donna à cet endroit le nom de Penuel, "car, dit-il j'ai vu Dieu face à face et j'ai eu la viesauvé."
32 Therefore to this day the Israelites do not eat the sinew of the hip which is upon the hollow of the thigh, because he touched the hollow of Jacob's thigh on the sinew of the hip.	32 Au lever du soleil, il avait passé Penuel et il boitait de la hanche.
	33 C'est pourquoi les Israélites ne mangent pas, jusqu'à ce jour, le nerf sciatique qui est à l'emboîturede la hanche, parce qu'il avait frappé Jacob à l'emboîture de la hanche, au nerf sciatique.
