1 Now Sarai, Abram's wife, bore him no children. She had an Egyptian maid whose name was Hagar;	1 Sarai, moglie di Abramo, non gli aveva dato figli, ma aveva una schiava egiziana chiamata Hagar.
2 and Sarai said to Abram, "Behold now, the LORD has prevented me from bearing children; go in to my maid; it may be that I shall obtain children by her." And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai.	2 Allora Sarai disse ad Abramo: «Ecco, Jahvè mi ha impedito di partorire; accostati alla mia schiava: forse da lei potrò avere figli». Abramo ascoltò la voce di Sarai.
3 So, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, Sarai, Abram's wife, took Hagar the Egyptian, her maid, and gave her to Abram her husband as a wife.	3 Così, al termine di dieci anni, da quando Abramo abitava nella terra di Canaan; Sarai, moglie di Abramo, prese Hagar l’Egiziana, sua schiava, e la diede in moglie ad Abramo suo marito.
4 And he went in to Hagar, and she conceived; and when she saw that she had conceived, she looked with contempt on her mistress.	4 Egli si accostò ad Hagar ed essa ne restò incinta. Ma quando essa si accorse di essere incinta, la sua signora non contò più nulla per lei.
5 And Sarai said to Abram, "May the wrong done to me be on you! I gave my maid to your embrace, and when she saw that she had conceived, she looked on me with contempt. May the LORD judge between you and me!"	5 Allora Sarai disse ad Abramo: «L’offesa fatta a me ricada su di te! Sono stata io a metterti in grembo la mia schiava, ma, da quando si è accorta di essere incinta; io non conto più niente per lei. Jahvè sia giudice tra me è te!»
6 But Abram said to Sarai, "Behold, your maid is in your power; do to her as you please." Then Sarai dealt harshly with her, and she fled from her.	6 Abramo disse a Sarai: «Ecco, la tua schiava è in tuo potere: falle ciò che pare bene ai tuoi occhi». Sarai allora la maltrattò, così che quella fuggì dalla sua presenza.
7 The angel of the LORD found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, the spring on the way to Shur.	7 La trovò l’angelo di Jahvè presso una sorgente di acqua nel deserto, la sorgente che è sulla strada di Shur,
8 And he said, "Hagar, maid of Sarai, where have you come from and where are you going?" She said, "I am fleeing from my mistress Sarai."	8 e le disse: «Hagar, schiava di Sarai, donde vieni e dove vai?» Essa rispose: «Fuggo dalla presenza di Sarai mia signora».
9 The angel of the LORD said to her, "Return to your mistress, and submit to her."	9 Le disse l’angelo di Jahvè: «Ritorna dalla tua signora e sottomettiti al suo potere».
10 The angel of the LORD also said to her, "I will so greatly multiply your descendants that they cannot be numbered for multitude."	10 Le disse ancora l’angelo di Jahvè: «Moltiplicherò assai la tua discendenza e non si potrà contarla per la sua moltitudine».
11 And the angel of the LORD said to her, "Behold, you are with child, and shall bear a son; you shall call his name Ishmael; because the LORD has given heed to your affliction.	11 Le disse ancora l’angelo di Jahvè: «Eccoti incinta: partorirai un figlio e lo chiamerai Ismaele, perché Jahvè ha udito la tua afflizione.
12 He shall be a wild ass of a man, his hand against every man and every man's hand against him; and he shall dwell over against all his kinsmen."	12 Costui sarà come un asino selvatico; la sua mano sarà contro tutti; e la mano di tutti contro di lui. Abiterà di fronte a tutti i suoi fratelli».
13 So she called the name of the LORD who spoke to her, "Thou art a God of seeing"; for she said, "Have I really seen God and remained alive after seeing him?"	13 Allora essa diede questo nome a Jahvè che le aveva parlato: «Tu sei El-Roi» perché diceva: «Qui dunque ho potuto ancora vedere, dopo la mia visione?»
14 Therefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi; it lies between Kadesh and Bered.	14 Perciò quel pozzo fu chiamato pozzo di Lakhai-Roi; si trova tra Kadesh e Bered.
15 And Hagar bore Abram a son; and Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael.	15 Poi Hagar partorì ad Abramo un figlio, e Abramo chiamò Ismaele il figlio che Hagar gli aveva partorito.
16 Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.	16 Abramo aveva ottantasei anni, quando Hagar partorì Ismaele ad Abramo.
