18 La nascita di Cristo avvenne in questo modo. Essendo Maria, sua madre, fidanzata a Giuseppe, prima che fossero venuti ad abitare insieme, si trovò che ella aveva concepito per virtù dello Spirito Santo.	18 Now the procreation of the Christ occurred in this way. After his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they lived together, she was found to have conceived in her womb by the Holy Spirit.
19 Giuseppe, suo sposo, che era uomo giusto e non la voleva esporre all'infamia, decise di lasciarla segretamente.	19 Then Joseph, her husband, since he was just and was not willing to hand her over, preferred to send her away secretly.
20 Mentre egli stava ripensando a queste cose, gli apparve in sogno un angelo del Signore, che gli disse: «Giuseppe, figlio di David, non aver timore a prenderti in moglie Maria, perchè quel che è nato in lei è opera dello Spirito Santo.	20 But while thinking over these things, behold, an Angel of the Lord appeared to him in his sleep, saying: “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to accept Mary as your wife. For what has been formed in her is of the Holy Spirit.
21 Ella darà alla luce un figlio, che tu chiamerai Gesù, poichè salverà il suo popolo dai loro peccati».	21 And she shall give birth to a son. And you shall call his name JESUS. For he shall accomplish the salvation of his people from their sins.”
22 Tutto ciò avvenne affinchè si adempisse quanto aveva detto il Signore a mezzo del profeta:	22 Now all this occurred in order to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying:
23 «Ecco, la Vergine concepirà e darà alla luce un figlio, che sarà chiamato Emmanuele», il che vuol dire: «Dio con noi».	23 “Behold, a virgin shall conceive in her womb, and she shall give birth to a son. And they shall call his name Emmanuel, which means: God is with us.”
24 Svegliatosi dal sonno, Giuseppe fece come gli aveva comandato l'angelo del Signore e, presa con sè la sua sposa,	24 Then Joseph, arising from sleep, did just as the Angel of the Lord had instructed him, and he accepted her as his wife.
25 non la conobbe finchè ella diede alla luce il figlio suo primogenito, a cui pose nome Gesù.	25 And he knew her not, yet she bore her son, the firstborn. And he called his name JESUS.
