| 2 egli ebbe per fratelli i figli di Josafat: Azaria, Jaiel, Zaccaria, Azaria, Micael e Safatia, figli tutti di Josafat, re di Giuda. | 2 He had brothers, the sons of Jehoshaphat: Azariah, Jehiel, Zechariah, Azariah, Michael, and Shephatiah; all these were the sons of Jehoshaphat king of Judah. |
| 3 Ad essi il padre aveva dato molti regali in argento, in oro e in rendite sulle città fortificate di Giuda; ma il regno lo aveva dato a Joram, perchè suo primogenito. | 3 Their father gave them great gifts, of silver, gold, and valuable possessions, together with fortified cities in Judah; but he gave the kingdom to Jehoram, because he was the first-born. |
| 4 Joram prese possesso del regno del padre suo e, consolidatosi, fece morire di spada tutti i fratelli e alcuni dei principi d'Israele. | 4 When Jehoram had ascended the throne of his father and was established, he slew all his brothers with the sword, and also some of the princes of Israel. |
| 5 Joram aveva trentadue anni quando divenne re, e ne regnò in Gerusalemme otto. | 5 Jehoram was thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned eight years in Jerusalem. |
| 6 Camminò nelle vie dei re d'Israele, come aveva fatto la casa di Acab, poichè aveva per moglie una figlia di Acab e fece ciò che è male al cospetto del Signore. | 6 And he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, as the house of Ahab had done; for the daughter of Ahab was his wife. And he did what was evil in the sight of the LORD. |
| 7 Ciò non pertanto il Signore non volle distruggere la casa di Davide a cagione dell'alleanza che aveva contratta con lui e della promessa fattagli di dare sempre una lampada a lui e ai suoi figli. | 7 Yet the LORD would not destroy the house of David, because of the covenant which he had made with David, and since he had promised to give a lamp to him and to his sons for ever. |
| 8 In quel tempo Edom si ribellò per sottrarsi al dominio di Giuda e si creò un re. | 8 In his days Edom revolted from the rule of Judah, and set up a king of their own. |
| 9 Joram perciò partì coi suoi capi e con tutta la cavalleria che aveva con sè e, levatosi di notte, sconfisse gli Idumei che lo avevano circondato e con essi tutti i loro capitani della cavalleria. | 9 Then Jehoram passed over with his commanders and all his chariots, and he rose by night and smote the Edomites who had surrounded him and his chariot commanders. |
| 10 Tuttavia Edom si ribellò per sottrarsi al dominio di Giuda, fino ad oggi. Anche Lobna si sottrasse in quel tempo all'autorità di Joram, perchè questi aveva abbandonato il Signore Dio de' padri suoi; | 10 So Edom revolted from the rule of Judah to this day. At that time Libnah also revolted from his rule, because he had forsaken the LORD, the God of his fathers. |
| 11 inoltre aveva fabbricato luoghi eccelsi nelle città di Giuda e indotto gli abitanti di Gerusalemme alla idolatria e Giuda alla prevaricazione. | 11 Moreover he made high places in the hill country of Judah, and led the inhabitants of Jerusalem into unfaithfulness, and made Judah go astray. |
| 12 Gli venne poi recata una lettera del profeta Elia concepita in questi termini: «Il Signore di Davide padre tuo dice queste cose: - Perchè tu non hai battuto le vie del padre tuo e quelle di Asa, re di Giuda, | 12 And a letter came to him from Elijah the prophet, saying, "Thus says the LORD, the God of David your father, 'Because you have not walked in the ways of Jehoshaphat your father, or in the ways of Asa king of Judah, |
| 13 ma ti sei messo sulla via dei re d'Israele e hai trascinato all'idolatria Giuda e gli abitanti di Gerusalemme, imitando le fornicazioni della casa di Acab e hai inoltre massacrato i fratelli tuoi, cioè la casa del padre tuo, che eran migliori di te, | 13 but have walked in the way of the kings of Israel, and have led Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem into unfaithfulness, as the house of Ahab led Israel into unfaithfulness, and also you have killed your brothers, of your father's house, who were better than yourself; |
| 14 il Signore colpirà con un grande castigo te, il tuo popolo, i figli tuoi, le mogli tue, e tutto il tuo avere. | 14 behold, the LORD will bring a great plague on your people, your children, your wives, and all your possessions, |
| 15 Tu poi sarai colto da una grave malattia di visceri, fino a che i tuoi intestini a poco a poco, un po' per giorno, non usciranno da te -». | 15 and you yourself will have a severe sickness with a disease of your bowels, until your bowels come out because of the disease, day by day.'" |
| 16 Il Signore suscitò quindi contro Joram lo spirito dei Filistei e degli Arabi, confinanti cogli Etiopi, | 16 And the LORD stirred up against Jehoram the anger of the Philistines and of the Arabs who are near the Ethiopians; |
| 17 i quali salirono contro la terra di Giuda, la devastarono e saccheggiarono tutta la sostanza che fu trovata nel palazzo del re, insieme coi figli di lui e colle mogli, cosicchè non gli rimase altro figliuolo che Joacaz, ch'era il più piccolo. | 17 and they came up against Judah, and invaded it, and carried away all the possessions they found that belonged to the king's house, and also his sons and his wives, so that no son was left to him except Jehoahaz, his youngest son. |
| 18 Di più lo colpì il Signore con una malattia incurabile degli intestini, | 18 And after all this the LORD smote him in his bowels with an incurable disease. |
| 19 la quale di giorno in giorno, per lo spazio di due anni, lo venne consumando in modo che per la lunga malattia gli intestini gli uscivano fuori; finì così per lasciarvi la vita. Morì di quella crudele infermità e il popolo non fece a lui, come aveva fatto ai suoi maggiori, le esequie, bruciandogli profumi. | 19 In course of time, at the end of two years, his bowels came out because of the disease, and he died in great agony. His people made no fire in his honor, like the fires made for his fathers. |
| 20 Aveva trentadue anni quando cominciò a regnare; e regnò otto anni in Gerusalemme. Non operò bene e fu sepolto nella città di Davide, ma non nel sepolcro dei re. | 20 He was thirty-two years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eight years in Jerusalem; and he departed with no one's regret. They buried him in the city of David, but not in the tombs of the kings. |
