1 - Disse frattanto Dio a Giacobbe: «Muoviti, e sali a Betel; ivi fermati, e fa' un altare a Dio che ti apparve quando fuggivi Esaù tuo fratello».	1 God said to Jacob: "Go up now to Bethel. Settle there and build an altar there to the God who appeared to you while you were fleeing from your brother Esau."
2 Giacobbe dunque, convocata tutta la famiglia, disse: «Gettate via gli dèi stranieri che sono fra voi, mondatevi, e cambiatevi le vesti.	2 So Jacob told his family and all the others who were with him: "Get rid of the foreign gods that you have among you; then purify yourselves and put on fresh clothes.
3 Levatevi, e saliremo a Betel per farvi un altare a Dio, che m'esaudì al tempo della mia tribolazione, e mi accompagnò nel mio viaggio».	3 We are now to go up to Bethel, and I will build an altar there to the God who answered me in my hour of distress and who has been with me wherever I have gone."
4 Gli consegnarono dunque tutti gli dèi stranieri che possedevano, e gli orecchini che avevano agli orecchi; ed egli li sotterrò sotto il terebinto che è al di là della città di Sichem.	4 They therefore handed over to Jacob all the foreign gods in their possession and also the rings they had in their ears.
5 Partiti che furono, Dio riempì di terrore tutte le circostanti città, che non osarono inseguire quelli che s'allontanavano.	5 Then, as they set out, a terror from God fell upon the towns round about, so that no one pursued the sons of Jacob.
6 Venne dunque Giacobbe in Luza, chiamata "Betel", nella terra di Canaan, e tutta la sua gente era con lui.	6 Thus Jacob and all the people who were with him arrived in Luz (that is, Bethel) in the land of Canaan.
7 Edificò un altare, e chiamò quel luogo col nome di "Casa di Dio", perchè ivi Dio gli era apparso quando fuggiva il fratello suo.	7 There he built an altar and named the place Bethel, for it was there that God had revealed himself to him when he was fleeing from his brother.
8 In quel tempo morì Debora nutrice di Rebecca, e fu sepolta al disotto di Betel, a piè d'una quercia, e quel luogo fu chiamato "Querce del pianto".	8 Death came to Rebekah's nurse Deborah; she was buried under the oak below Bethel, and so it was called Allonbacuth.
9 Apparve Dio un'altra volta a Giacobbe dopo che fu tornato dalla Mesopotamia di Siria, e lo benedisse,	9 On Jacob's arrival from Paddan-aram, God appeared to him again and blessed him.
10 dicendogli: «Non ti chiamerai più Giacobbe, ma il tuo nome sarà Israele». E lo chiamò Israele,	10 God said to him: "You whose name is Jacob shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel shall be your name." Thus he was named Israel.
11 e gli disse: «Io sono Iddio onnipotente; cresci e moltiplicati; genti e popoli e nazioni da te usciranno; dei re saranno tuoi discendenti;	11 God also said to him: "I am God Almighty; be fruitful and multiply. A nation, indeed an assembly of nations, shall stem from you, and kings shall issue from your loins.
12 la terra che detti ad Abramo e ad Isacco, la darò a te ed alla tua discendenza dopo di te».	12 The land I once gave to Abraham and Isaac I now give to you; And to your descendants after you will I give this land."
13 Poi disparve da lui.	13 Then God departed from him.
14 Giacobbe dunque nel luogo dove gli aveva parlato Iddio alzò un monumento di pietra, versandovi sopra delle libazioni, spargendovi olio,	14 On the site where God had spoken with him, Jacob set up a memorial stone, and upon it he made a libation and poured out oil.
15 e chiamando quel luogo col nome di "Betel".	15 Jacob named the site Bethel, because God had spoken with him there.
16 Partito di lì, giunse in primavera nella terra che conduce ad Efrata. Ivi Rachele, essendo di parto,	16 Then they departed from Bethel; but while they still had some distance to go on the way to Ephrath, Rachel began to be in labor and to suffer great distress.
17 per la difficoltà del parto cominciò a correr pericolo. La levatrice le diceva: «Non temere, che avrai anche questo figliuolo».	17 When her pangs were most severe, her midwife said to her, "Have no fear! This time, too, you have a son."
18 Stando però essa per morire dal dolore, così vicina a morte, chiamò il figlio suo Benoni, cioè Figlio del mio dolore; ma il padre lo chiamò Beniamino, cioè Figlio della destra.	18 With her last breath--for she was at the point of death-she called him Ben-oni; his father, however, named him Benjamin.
19 Morì dunque Rachele, e fu sepolta sulla via che conduce ad Efrata, cioè a Betleem.	19 Thus Rachel died; and she was buried on the road to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).
20 Giacobbe alzò un monumento sul sepolcro di lei; ed è quello chiamato anc'oggi "Il monumento di Rachele".	20 Jacob set up a memorial stone on her grave, and the same monument marks Rachel's grave to this day.
21 Partitosi poi di lì, fermò le tende al di là della Torre del gregge.	21 Israel moved on and pitched his tent beyond Migdal-eder.
22 Ma, mentre era per quelle parti, Ruben andò, e dormì con Bala, donna del padre suo, il quale lo venne a sapere. Eran dunque dodici i figli di Giacobbe.	22 While Israel was encamped in that region, Reuben went and lay with Bilhah, his father's concubine. When Israel heard of it, he was greatly offended. The sons of Jacob were now twelve.
23 Figli di Lia: Ruben, primogenito, Simeone, Levi, Giuda, Issacar e Zabulon.	23 The sons of Leah: Reuben, Jacob's first-born, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun;
24 Figli di Rachele: Giuseppe e Beniamino.	24 the sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin;
25 Figli di Bala ancella di Rachele: Dan e Neftali.	25 the sons of Rachel's maid Bilhah: Dan and Naphtali;
26 Figli di Zelfa ancella di Lia: Gad e Aser. Son questi i figli di Giacobbe, natigli in Mesopotamia di Siria.	26 the sons of Leah's maid Zilpah: Gad and Asher. These are the sons of Jacob who were born to him in Paddan-aram.
27 Tornò in ultimo Giacobbe al padre suo Isacco in Mambre città d'Arbee, cioè Hebron, dove Abramo ed Isacco eran venuti pellegrini.	27 Jacob went home to his father Isaac at Mamre, in Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac had stayed.
28 L'età d'Isacco giunse a centottant'anni.	28 The lifetime of Isaac was one hundred and eighty years;
29 Allora consumato dall'età morì, ed andò a riunirsi al suo popolo, vecchio, pieno di giorni, ed Esaù e Giacobbe suoi figli lo seppellirono.	29 then he breathed his last. After a full life, he died as an old man and was taken to his kinsmen. His sons Esau and Jacob buried him.
