CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINLXX
Then David went away from there, and he fled to the cave of Adullam. And when his brothers and all of his father’s house had heard of it, they descended to him there.1 και απηλθεν εκειθεν δαυιδ και διεσωθη και ερχεται εις το σπηλαιον το οδολλαμ και ακουουσιν οι αδελφοι αυτου και ο οικος του πατρος αυτου και καταβαινουσιν προς αυτον εκει
And all those left in distress, or oppressed by debt to strangers, or bitter in soul, gathered themselves to him. And he became their leader, and about four hundred men were with him.2 και συνηγοντο προς αυτον πας εν αναγκη και πας υποχρεως και πας κατωδυνος ψυχη και ην επ' αυτων ηγουμενος και ησαν μετ' αυτου ως τετρακοσιοι ανδρες
And David set out from there to Mizpah, which is of Moab. And he said to the king of Moab, “I beg you, let my father and my mother remain with you, until I know what God will do for me.”3 και απηλθεν δαυιδ εκειθεν εις μασσηφα της μωαβ και ειπεν προς βασιλεα μωαβ γινεσθωσαν δη ο πατηρ μου και η μητηρ μου παρα σοι εως οτου γνω τι ποιησει μοι ο θεος
And he left them before the face of the king of Moab. And they stayed with him for all the days that David was in the stronghold.4 και παρεκαλεσεν το προσωπον του βασιλεως μωαβ και κατωκουν μετ' αυτου πασας τας ημερας οντος του δαυιδ εν τη περιοχη
And the prophet Gad said to David: “Do not choose to stay in the stronghold. Set out and go into the land of Judah.” And so, David set out, and he went into the forest of Hereth.5 και ειπεν γαδ ο προφητης προς δαυιδ μη καθου εν τη περιοχη πορευου και ηξεις εις γην ιουδα και επορευθη δαυιδ και ηλθεν και εκαθισεν εν πολει σαριχ
And Saul heard that David, and the men who were with him, had been seen. Now while Saul was staying in Gibeah, and while he was in the forest that is in Ramah, holding a spear in his hand, with all his servants standing around him,6 και ηκουσεν σαουλ οτι εγνωσται δαυιδ και οι ανδρες οι μετ' αυτου και σαουλ εκαθητο εν τω βουνω υπο την αρουραν την εν ραμα και το δορυ εν τη χειρι αυτου και παντες οι παιδες αυτου παρειστηκεισαν αυτω
he said to his servants who were assisting him: “Listen now, you sons of Benjamin! Will the son of Jesse give to all of you fields and vineyards, and will he make all of you tribunes or centurions,7 και ειπεν σαουλ προς τους παιδας αυτου τους παρεστηκοτας αυτω και ειπεν αυτοις ακουσατε δη υιοι βενιαμιν ει αληθως πασιν υμιν δωσει ο υιος ιεσσαι αγρους και αμπελωνας και παντας υμας ταξει εκατονταρχους και χιλιαρχους
so that you would all conspire against me, and so that there is no one to inform me, especially when even my son has formed a pact with the son of Jesse? There is no one among you who grieves for my situation, or who would report to me. For my son has raised up my servant against me, seeking to betray me, even to this day.”8 οτι συγκεισθε παντες υμεις επ' εμε και ουκ εστιν ο αποκαλυπτων το ωτιον μου εν τω διαθεσθαι τον υιον μου διαθηκην μετα του υιου ιεσσαι και ουκ εστιν πονων περι εμου εξ υμων και αποκαλυπτων το ωτιον μου οτι επηγειρεν ο υιος μου τον δουλον μου επ' εμε εις εχθρον ως η ημερα αυτη
Then Doeg, the Edomite, who was standing near, and who was first among the servants of Saul, responding, said: “I saw the son of Jesse, in Nob, with Ahimelech, the son of Ahitub, the priest.9 και αποκρινεται δωηκ ο συρος ο καθεστηκως επι τας ημιονους σαουλ και ειπεν εορακα τον υιον ιεσσαι παραγινομενον εις νομβα προς αβιμελεχ υιον αχιτωβ τον ιερεα
And he consulted the Lord for him, and he gave him food. Moreover, he gave him the sword of Goliath, the Philistine.”10 και ηρωτα αυτω δια του θεου και επισιτισμον εδωκεν αυτω και την ρομφαιαν γολιαδ του αλλοφυλου εδωκεν αυτω
Then the king sent to summon Ahimelech, the priest, the son of Ahitub, and all of his father’s house, the priests who were in Nob, and they all came before the king.11 και απεστειλεν ο βασιλευς καλεσαι τον αβιμελεχ υιον αχιτωβ και παντας τους υιους του πατρος αυτου τους ιερεις τους εν νομβα και παρεγενοντο παντες προς τον βασιλεα
And Saul said to Ahimelech, “Listen, son of Ahitub.” He responded, “Here I am, lord.”12 και ειπεν σαουλ ακουε δη υιε αχιτωβ και ειπεν ιδου εγω λαλει κυριε
And Saul said to him: “Why have you conspired against me, you and the son of Jesse? For you gave him bread and a sword, and you consulted the Lord for him, so that he might rise up against me, continuing as a traitor even to this day.”13 και ειπεν αυτω σαουλ ινα τι συνεθου κατ' εμου συ και ο υιος ιεσσαι δουναι σε αυτω αρτον και ρομφαιαν και ερωταν αυτω δια του θεου θεσθαι αυτον επ' εμε εις εχθρον ως η ημερα αυτη
And responding to the king, Ahimelech said: “But who among all your servants is as faithful as David? And he is the son-in-law of the king, and he goes forth at your order, and he is a glory within your house.14 και απεκριθη τω βασιλει και ειπεν και τις εν πασιν τοις δουλοις σου ως δαυιδ πιστος και γαμβρος του βασιλεως και αρχων παντος παραγγελματος σου και ενδοξος εν τω οικω σου
Did I begin to consult the Lord for him today? May this be far from me! Let not the king suspect this kind of thing against his servant, nor against anyone in all my father’s house. For your servant did not know anything about this matter, either small or great.”15 η σημερον ηργμαι ερωταν αυτω δια του θεου μηδαμως μη δοτω ο βασιλευς κατα του δουλου αυτου λογον και εφ' ολον τον οικον του πατρος μου οτι ουκ ηδει ο δουλος ο σος εν πασιν τουτοις ρημα μικρον η μεγα
And the king said, “You shall die a death, Ahimelech, you and all your father’s house!”16 και ειπεν ο βασιλευς σαουλ θανατω αποθανη αβιμελεχ συ και πας ο οικος του πατρος σου
And the king said to the emissaries who were standing around him: “You shall turn, and put to death the priests of the Lord. For their hand is with David. They knew that he had fled, and they did not reveal it to me.” But the servants of the king were not willing to extend their hands against the priests of the Lord.17 και ειπεν ο βασιλευς τοις παρατρεχουσιν τοις εφεστηκοσιν επ' αυτον προσαγαγετε και θανατουτε τους ιερεις του κυριου οτι η χειρ αυτων μετα δαυιδ και οτι εγνωσαν οτι φευγει αυτος και ουκ απεκαλυψαν το ωτιον μου και ουκ εβουληθησαν οι παιδες του βασιλεως επενεγκειν τας χειρας αυτων απαντησαι εις τους ιερεις κυριου
And the king said to Doeg, “You shall turn and rush against the priests.” And Doeg, the Edomite, turned and rushed against the priests. And he massacred, on that day, eighty-five men, vested with the linen ephod.18 και ειπεν ο βασιλευς τω δωηκ επιστρεφου συ και απαντα εις τους ιερεις και επεστραφη δωηκ ο συρος και εθανατωσεν τους ιερεις κυριου εν τη ημερα εκεινη τριακοσιους και πεντε ανδρας παντας αιροντας εφουδ
Then he struck Nob, the city of the priests, with the edge of the sword; he struck down men and women, little ones and infants, as well as ox and donkey and sheep, with the edge of the sword.19 και την νομβα την πολιν των ιερεων επαταξεν εν στοματι ρομφαιας απο ανδρος εως γυναικος απο νηπιου εως θηλαζοντος και μοσχου και ονου και προβατου
But one of the sons of Ahimelech, the son of Ahitub, whose name was Abiathar, escaping, fled to David.20 και διασωζεται υιος εις τω αβιμελεχ υιω αχιτωβ και ονομα αυτω αβιαθαρ και εφυγεν οπισω δαυιδ
And he reported to him that Saul had slain the priests of the Lord.21 και απηγγειλεν αβιαθαρ τω δαυιδ οτι εθανατωσεν σαουλ παντας τους ιερεις του κυριου
And David said to Abiathar: “I knew, on that day when Doeg, the Edomite was there, that without doubt he would report it to Saul. I am guilty of all the souls of your father’s house.22 και ειπεν δαυιδ τω αβιαθαρ ηιδειν εν τη ημερα εκεινη οτι δωηκ ο συρος οτι απαγγελλων απαγγελει τω σαουλ εγω ειμι αιτιος των ψυχων οικου του πατρος σου
You should remain with me. Do not be afraid. For he who seeks my life, seeks your life also, but with me you shall be saved.”23 καθου μετ' εμου μη φοβου οτι ου εαν ζητω τη ψυχη μου τοπον ζητησω και τη ψυχη σου οτι πεφυλαξαι συ παρ' εμοι
