And so, I beg you, brothers, by the mercy of God, that you offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God, with the subservience of your mind.1 I urge you, then, brothers, remembering the mercies of God, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, dedicated and acceptable to God; that is the kind of worship for you, as sensible people.
And do not choose to be conformed to this age, but instead choose to be reformed in the newness of your mind, so that you may demonstrate what is the will of God: what is good, and what is well-pleasing, and what is perfect.2 Do not model your behaviour on the contemporary world, but let the renewing of your mindstransform you, so that you may discern for yourselves what is the wil of God -- what is good and acceptable andmature.
For I say, through the grace that has been given to me, to all who are among you: Taste no more than it is necessary to taste, but taste unto sobriety and just as God has distributed a share of the faith to each one.3 And through the grace that I have been given, I say this to every one of you: never pride yourself onbeing better than you real y are, but think of yourself dispassionately, recognising that God has given to eachone his measure of faith.
For just as, within one body, we have many parts, though all the parts do not have the same role,4 Just as each of us has various parts in one body, and the parts do not al have the same function:
so also we, being many, are one body in Christ, and each one is a part, the one of the other.5 in the same way, al of us, though there are so many of us, make up one body in Christ, and asdifferent parts we are al joined to one another.
And we each have different gifts, according to the grace that has been given to us: whether prophecy, in agreement with the reasonableness of faith;6 Then since the gifts that we have differ according to the grace that was given to each of us: if it is agift of prophecy, we should prophesy as much as our faith tells us;
or ministry, in ministering; or he who teaches, in doctrine;7 if it is a gift of practical service, let us devote ourselves to serving; if it is teaching, to teaching;
he who exhorts, in exhortation; he who gives, in simplicity; he who governs, in solicitude; he who shows mercy, in cheerfulness.8 if it is encouraging, to encouraging. When you give, you should give generously from the heart; if youare put in charge, you must be conscientious; if you do works of mercy, let it be because you enjoy doing them.
Let love be without falseness: hating evil, clinging to what is good,9 Let love be without any pretence. Avoid what is evil; stick to what is good.
loving one another with fraternal charity, surpassing one another in honor:10 In brotherly love let your feelings of deep affection for one another come to expression and regardothers as more important than yourself.
in solicitude, not lazy; in spirit, fervent; serving the Lord;11 In the service of the Lord, work not halfheartedly but with conscientiousness and an eager spirit.
in hope, rejoicing; in tribulation, enduring; in prayer, ever-willing;12 Be joyful in hope, persevere in hardship; keep praying regularly;
in the difficulties of the saints, sharing; in hospitality, attentive.13 share with any of God's holy people who are in need; look for opportunities to be hospitable.
Bless those who are persecuting you: bless, and do not curse.14 Bless your persecutors; never curse them, bless them.
Rejoice with those who are rejoicing. Weep with those who are weeping.15 Rejoice with others when they rejoice, and be sad with those in sorrow.
Be of the same mind toward one another: not savoring what is exalted, but consenting in humility. Do not choose to seem wise to yourself.16 Give the same consideration to al others alike. Pay no regard to social standing, but meet humblepeople on their own terms. Do not congratulate yourself on your own wisdom.
Render to no one harm for harm. Provide good things, not only in the sight of God, but also in the sight of all men.17 Never pay back evil with evil, but bear in mind the ideals that all regard with respect.
If it is possible, in so far as you are able, be at peace with all men.18 As much as possible, and to the utmost of your ability, be at peace with everyone.
Do not defend yourselves, dearest ones. Instead, step aside from wrath. For it is written: “Vengeance is mine. I shall give retribution, says the Lord.”19 Never try to get revenge: leave that, my dear friends, to the Retribution. As scripture says:Vengeance is mine -- I wil pay them back, the Lord promises.
So if an enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him a drink. For in doing so, you will heap burning coals upon his head.20 And more: If your enemy is hungry, give him something to eat; if thirsty, something to drink. By this,you wil be heaping red-hot coals on his head.
Do not allow evil to prevail, instead prevail over evil by means of goodness.21 Do not be mastered by evil, but master evil with good.
