CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINEL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
And they went across the strait of the sea into the region of the Gerasenes.1 Llegaron a la otra orilla del mar, a la región de los gerasenos.
And as he was departing from the boat, he was immediately met, from among the tombs, by a man with an unclean spirit,2 Apenas Jesús desembarcó, le salió al encuentro desde el cementerio un hombre poseído por un espíritu impuro.
who had his dwelling place with the tombs; neither had anyone been able to bind him, even with chains.3 El habitaba en los sepulcros, y nadie podía sujetarlo, ni siquiera con cadenas.
For having been bound often with shackles and chains, he had broken the chains and smashed the shackles; and no one had been able to tame him.4 Muchas veces lo habían atado con grillos y cadenas pero el había roto las cadenas y destrozado los grillos, y nadie podía dominarlo.
And he was always, day and night, among the tombs, or in the mountains, crying out and cutting himself with stones.5 Día y noche, vagaba entre los sepulcros y por la montaña, dando alaridos e hiriéndose con piedras.
And seeing Jesus from afar, he ran and adored him.6 Al ver de lejos a Jesús, vino corriendo a postrarse ante él,
And crying out with a loud voice, he said: “What am I to you, Jesus, the Son of the Most High God? I beseech you by God, that you not torment me.”7 gritando con fuerza: «¿Qué quieres de mí, Jesús, Hijo de Dios, el Altísimo? ¡Te conjuro por Dios, no me atormentes!».
For he said to him, “Depart from the man, you unclean spirit.”8 Porque Jesús le había dicho: «¡Sal de este hombre, espíritu impuro!».
And he questioned him: “What is your name?” And he said to him, “My name is Legion, for we are many.”9 Después le preguntó: «¿Cuál es tu nombre?». El respondió: «Mi nombre es Legión, porque somos muchos».
And he entreated him greatly, so that he would not expel him from the region.10 Y le rogaba con insistencia que no lo expulsara de aquella región.
And in that place, near the mountain, there was a great herd of swine, feeding.11 Había allí una gran piara de cerdos que estaba paciendo en la montaña.
And the spirits entreated him, saying: “Send us into the swine, so that we may enter into them.”12 Los espíritus impuros suplicaron a Jesús: «Envíanos a los cerdos, para que entremos en ellos».
And Jesus promptly gave them permission. And the unclean spirits, departing, entered into the swine. And the herd of about two thousand rushed down with great force into the sea, and they were drowned in the sea.13 El se lo permitió. Entonces los espíritus impuros salieron de aquel hombre, entraron en los cerdos, y desde lo alto del acantilado, toda la piara –unos dos mil animales– se precipitó al mar y se ahogó.
Then those who pastured them fled, and they reported it in the city and in the countryside. And they all went out to see what was happening.14 Los cuidadores huyeron y difundieron la noticia en la ciudad y en los poblados. La gente fue a ver qué había sucedido.
And they came to Jesus. And they saw the man who had been troubled by the demon, sitting, clothed and with a sane mind, and they were afraid.15 Cuando llegaron adonde estaba Jesús, vieron sentado, vestido y en su sano juicio, al que había estado poseído por aquella Legión, y se llenaron de temor.
And those who had seen it explained to them how he had dealt with the man who had the demon, and about the swine.16 Los testigos del hecho les contaron lo que había sucedido con el endemoniado y con los cerdos.
And they began to petition him, so that he would withdraw from their borders.17 Entonces empezaron a pedir a Jesús que se alejara de su territorio.
And as he was climbing into the boat, the man who had been troubled by the demons began to beg him, so that he might be with him.18 En el momento de embarcarse, el hombre que había estado endemoniado le pidió que lo dejara quedarse con él.
And he did not permit him, but he said to him, “Go to your own people, in your own house, and announce to them how great are the things that Lord has done for you, and how he has taken pity on you.”19 Jesús no se lo permitió, sino que le dijo: «Vete a tu casa con tu familia, y anúnciales todo lo que el Señor hizo contigo al compadecerse de ti».
And he went away and began to preach in the Ten Cities, how great were the things that Jesus had done for him. And everyone wondered.20 El hombre se fue y comenzó a proclamar por la región de la Decápolis lo que Jesús había hecho por él, y todos quedaban admirados.
And when Jesus had crossed in the boat, over the strait again, a great crowd came together before him. And he was near the sea.21 Cuando Jesús regresó en la barca a la otra orilla, una gran multitud se reunió a su alrededor, y él se quedó junto al mar.
And one of the rulers of the synagogue, named Jairus, approached. And seeing him, he fell prostrate at his feet.22 Entonces llegó uno de los jefes de la sinagoga, llamado Jairo, y al verlo, se arrojó a sus pies,
And he beseeched him greatly, saying: “For my daughter is near the end. Come and lay your hand on her, so that she may be healthy and may live.”23 rogándole con insistencia: «Mi hijita se está muriendo; ven a imponerle las manos, para que se cure y viva».
And he went with him. And a great crowd followed him, and they pressed upon him.24 Jesús fue con él y lo seguía una gran multitud que lo apretaba por todos lados.
And there was a woman who had a flow of blood for twelve years.25 Se encontraba allí una mujer que desde hacia doce años padecía de hemorragias.
And she had endured much from several physicians, and she had spent everything she owned with no benefit at all, but instead she became worse.26 Había sufrido mucho en manos de numerosos médicos y gastado todos sus bienes sin resultado; al contrario, cada vez estaba peor.
Then, when she had heard of Jesus, she approached through the crowd behind him, and she touched his garment.27 Como había oído hablar de Jesús, se le acercó por detrás, entre la multitud, y tocó su manto,
For she said: “Because if I touch even his garment, I will be saved.”28 porque pensaba: «Con sólo tocar su manto quedaré curada».
And immediately, the source of her bleeding was dried up, and she sensed in her body that she had been healed from the wound.29 Inmediatamente cesó la hemorragia, y ella sintió en su cuerpo que estaba curada de su mal.
And immediately Jesus, realizing within himself that power that had gone out from him, turning to the crowd, said, “Who touched my garments?”30 Jesús se dio cuenta en seguida de la fuerza que había salido de él, se dio vuelta y, dirigiéndose a la multitud, preguntó: «¿Quién tocó mi manto?».
And his disciples said to him, “You see that the crowd presses around you, and yet you say, ‘Who touched me?’ ”31 Sus discípulos le dijeron: «¿Ves que la gente te aprieta por todas partes y preguntas quién te ha tocado?».
And he looked around to see the woman who had done this.32 Pero él seguía mirando a su alrededor, para ver quién había sido.
Yet truly, the woman, in fear and trembling, knowing what had happened within her, went and fell prostrate before him, and she told him the whole truth.33 Entonces la mujer, muy asustada y temblando, porque sabía bien lo que le había ocurrido, fue a arrojarse a los pies y le confesó toda la verdad.
And he said to her: “Daughter, your faith has saved you. Go in peace, and be healed from your wound.”34 Jesús le dijo: «Hija, tu fe te ha salvado. Vete en paz, y queda curada de tu enfermedad».
While he was still speaking, they arrived from the ruler of the synagogue, saying: “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?”35 Todavía estaba hablando, cuando llegaron unas personas de la casa del jefe de la sinagoga y le dijeron: «Tu hija ya murió; ¿para qué vas a seguir molestando al Maestro?».
But Jesus, having heard the word that was spoken, said to the ruler of the synagogue: “Do not be afraid. You need only believe.”36 Pero Jesús, sin tener en cuenta esas palabras, dijo al jefe de la sinagoga: «No temas, basta que creas».
And he would not permit anyone to follow him, except Peter, and James, and John the brother of James.37 Y sin permitir que nadie lo acompañara, excepto Pedro, Santiago y Juan, el hermano de Santiago,
And they went to the house of the ruler of the synagogue. And he saw a tumult, and weeping, and much wailing.38 fue a casa del jefe de la sinagoga. Allí vio un gran alboroto, y gente que lloraba y gritaba.
And entering, he said to them: “Why are you disturbed and weeping? The girl is not dead, but is asleep.”39 Al entrar, les dijo: «¿Por qué se alborotan y lloran? La niña no está muerta, sino que duerme».
And they derided him. Yet truly, having put them all out, he took the father and mother of the girl, and those who were with him, and he entered to where the girl was lying.40 Y se burlaban de él. Pero Jesús hizo salir a todos, y tomando consigo al padre y a la madre de la niña, y a los que venían con él, entró donde ella estaba.
And taking the girl by the hand, he said to her, “Talitha koumi,” which means, “Little girl, (I say to you) arise.41 La tomó de la mano y le dijo: «Talitá kum», que significa: «¡Niña, yo te lo ordeno, levántate».
And immediately the young girl rose up and walked. Now she was twelve years old. And they were suddenly struck with a great astonishment.42 En seguida la niña, que ya tenía doce años, se levantó y comenzó a caminar. Ellos, entonces, se llenaron de asombro,
And he instructed them sternly, so that no one would know about it. And he told them to give her something to eat.43 y él les mandó insistentemente que nadie se enterara de lo sucedido. Después dijo que le dieran de comer.
