1 Now the feast of Passover and of Unleavened Bread was two days away. And the leaders of the priests, and the scribes, were seeking a means by which they might deceitfully seize him and kill him.	1 Due giorni dopo era la Pasqua e gli Azzimi, e i gran sacerdoti e gli scribi cercavano il modo di impadronirsi di Gesù con inganno per ucciderlo;

3 And when he was in Bethania, in the house of Simon the leper, and was reclining to eat, a woman arrived having an alabaster container of ointment, of precious spikenard. 5 For this ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and been given to the poor.” And they murmured against her.	5 Si sarebbe potuto vendere questo unguento per più di trecento denari e darli ai poveri!» E brontolavano contro di lei.
6 But Jesus said: “Permit her. What is the reason that you trouble her? She has done a good deed for me.	6 Gesù disse: «Lasciatela stare, perché le date noie? Essa ha compiuto verso di me un’opera buona.
7 For the poor, you have with you always. And whenever you wish, you are able to do good to them. But you do not have me always.	7 I poveri, infatti, li avrete sempre con voi e quando lo vorrete potrete sempre far loro del bene, ma non sempre avrete me.
8 But she has done what she could. She has arrived in advance to anoint my body for burial.	8 Essa ha fatto ciò che ha potuto: ha anticipato l’unzione del mio corpo per la sepoltura.

17 Then, when evening came, he arrived with the twelve.	17 Fattasi sera, Gesù arriva con i dodici.
18 And while reclining and eating with them at table, Jesus said, “Amen I say to you, that one of you, who eats with me, will betray me.”	18 Mentre erano adagiati a mensa e mangiavano, Gesù disse: «In verità vi dico: uno di voi mi tradirà, uno che mangia con me».
19 But they began to be sorrowful and to say to him, one at a time: “Is it I?”	19 Cominciarono a rattristarsi e a dirgli ad uno ad uno: «Sono io, forse?»
20 And he said to them: “It is one of the twelve, who dips his hand with me in the dish.	20 Egli disse: «È uno dei dodici, uno che mette la mano nel piatto con me.
21 And indeed, the Son of man goes, just as it has been written of him. But woe to that man by whom the Son of man will be betrayed. It would be better for that man if he had never been born.”	21 Il Figlio dell’uomo se ne va, secondo ciò che di lui sta scritto, ma guai a quell’uomo per mezzo del quale il Figlio dell’uomo è tradito. Sarebbe stato meglio per quell’uomo se non fosse nato».
22 And while eating with them, Jesus took bread. And blessing it, he broke it and gave it to them, and he said: “Take. This is my body.”	22 Mentre mangiavano, Gesù prese del pane e, recitata la benedizione, lo spezzò e lo diede loro dicendo: «Prendete, questo è il mio corpo».
23 And having taken the chalice, giving thanks, he gave it to them. And they all drank from it.	23 Poi prese una coppa e, rese grazie, la porse loro e tutti ne bevvero.
24 And he said to them: “This is my blood of the new covenant, which shall be shed for many.	24 E disse loro: «Questo è il mio sangue, il sangue del patto, che è sparso per molti.
25 Amen I say to you, that I will no longer drink from this fruit of the vine, until that day when I will drink it new in the kingdom of God.”	25 In verità vi dico: non berrò più il frutto della vite fino al giorno in cui lo berrò nuovo nel regno di Dio».
26 And having sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.	26 Dopo il canto dei salmi, partirono per il monte degli Ulivi,
27 And Jesus said to them: “You will all fall away from me in this night. For it has been written: ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’	27 Gesù dice loro: «Tutti voi patirete scandalo, perché sta scritto: percuoterò il pastore e le pecore saranno disperse ;
28 But after I have risen again, I will go before you to Galilee.”	28 ma dopo che sarò risorto vi precederò in Galilea».
29 Then Peter said to him, “Even if all will have fallen away from you, yet I will not.”	29 Pietro gli diceva: «Anche se tutti si scandalizzeranno, io no!»
30 And Jesus said to him, “Amen I say to you, that this day, in this night, before the rooster has uttered its voice twice, you will deny me three times.”	30 Gesù gli dice: «In verità ti dico: tu, oggi, questa notte, prima che il gallo abbia cantato due volte, mi avrai rinnegato tre volte».
31 But he spoke further, “Even if I must die along with you, I will not deny you.” And they all spoke similarly also.	31 Egli con più insistenza diceva: «Dovessi morire ‘per te, io non ti rinnegherò!» E tutti dicevano lo stesso.
32 And they went to a country estate, by the name of Gethsemani. And he said to his disciples, “Sit here, while I pray.”	32 Arrivano in un podere, chiamato Gethsemani. Gesù dice ai suoi discepoli: «Sedetevi qua; mentre io vado a pregare».
33 And he took Peter, and James, and John with him. And he began to be afraid and wearied.	33 Poi prende con sé Pietro, Giacomo e Giovanni e cominciò a provare spavento ed angoscia.
34 And he said to them: “My soul is sorrowful, even unto death. Remain here and be vigilant.”	34 E dice loro: «La mia anima è tristissima, da morirne; restate qua e vegliate»:
35 And when he had proceeded on a little ways, he fell prostrate on the ground. And he prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass away from him.	35 E andato un po’ più innanzi si prostrava a terra e pregava affinché, se fosse possibile, passasse da lui quell’ora.
36 And he said: “Abba, Father, all things are possible to you. Take this chalice from me. But let it be, not as I will, but as you will.”	36 E diceva: «Abba, Padre; tutto è possibile a te, allontana da me questo calice; tuttavia, non quello che voglio io ma quello che vuoi tu».
37 And he went and found them sleeping. And he said to Peter: “Simon, are you sleeping? Were you not able to be vigilant for one hour?	37 Poi torna e li trova addormentati, e dice a Pietro: «Simone, dormi? Non hai potuto vegliare un’ora!
38 Watch and pray, so that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”	38 Vegliate e pregate per non entrare in tentazione; lo spirito sì, è pronto, ma la carne è debole».
39 And going away again, he prayed, saying the same words.	39 Andatosene di nuovo, pregò ripetendo le stesse parole.
40 And upon returning, he found them sleeping yet again, (for their eyes were heavy) and they did not know how to respond to him.	40 Di ritorno, li trovò addormentati perché i loro occhi s'erano appesantiti e non sapevano che cosa rispondergli.
41 And he arrived for the third time, and he said to them: “Sleep now, and take rest. It is enough. The hour has arrived. Behold, the Son of man will be betrayed into the hands of sinners.	41 Torna una terza volta e dice loro: «Seguitate a dormire e riposate. Basta, l’ora è venuta. Il Figlio dell’uomo sta per essere consegnato nelle mani dei peccatori.
42 Rise up, let us go. Behold, he who will betray me is near.”	42 Alzatevi, andiamo. Ecco, il traditore è vicino».
43 And while he was still speaking, Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, arrived, and with him was a large crowd with swords and clubs, sent from the leaders of the priests, and the scribes, and the elders.	43 Subito, mentre ancora parlava, sopravvenne Giuda, uno dei dodici, e con lui una folla con spade e bastoni, mandata dai gran sacerdoti, agli scribi e dagli anziani.
44 Now his betrayer had given them a sign, saying: “He whom I shall kiss, it is he. Take hold of him, and lead him away cautiously.”	44 Il traditore aveva loro dato un segnale: «Quello che io bacerò è lui: prendetelo e portatelo via con cautela».
45 And when he had arrived, immediately drawing near to him, he said: “Hail, Master!” And he kissed him.	45 Venuto, dunque, e avvicinatosi subito a Gesù: «Maestro!» disse, e lo baciò.
46 But they laid hands on him and held him.	46 Allora quelli gli misero le mani addosso e lo arrestarono.
47 Then a certain one of those standing near, drawing a sword, struck a servant of the high priest and cut off his ear.	47 Uno, però, degli astanti, tratta la spada colpì il servo del sommo sacerdote e gli portò via l’orecchio.
48 And in response, Jesus said to them: “Have you set out to apprehend me, just as if to a robber, with swords and clubs?	48 Gesù prese a dire loro: «Siete usciti come contro un brigante, con spade e bastoni, per impossessarvi di me?
49 Daily, I was with you in the temple teaching, and you did not take hold of me. But in this way, the scriptures are fulfilled.”	49 Ogni giorno ero tra voi ad insegnare nel tempio e non mi avete predo; ma è necessario che si adempiano: le Scritture».
50 Then his disciples, leaving him behind, all fled away.	50 Tutti, allora, lo abbandonarono e fuggirono;
51 Now a certain young man followed him, having nothing but a fine linen cloth over himself. And they took hold of him.	51 Seguiva Gesù un giovinetto, ravvolto in un lenzuolo sul corpo nudo, e tentano di prenderlo;
52 But he, rejecting the fine linen cloth, escaped from them naked.	52 ma egli, abbandonando il lenzuolo, se ne fuggì nudo.
53 And they led Jesus to the high priest. And all the priests and the scribes and the elders came together.	53 E condussero Gesù al sommo sacerdote; e tutti i gran sacerdoti, gli anziani e gli scribi si riunirono.
54 But Peter followed him from a distance, even into the court of the high priest. And he sat with the servants at the fire and warmed himself.	54 Pietro lo seguì a distanza, fin dentro il cortile del sommo sacerdote, ed era seduto tra i servi, scaldandosi presso la fiamma.
55 Yet truly, the leaders of the priests and the entire council sought testimony against Jesus, so that they might deliver him to death, and they found none.	55 Ora, i gran sacerdoti e tutto il sinedrio cercavano una testimonianza contro Gesù per condannarlo a morte, ma non la trovarono.
56 For many spoke false testimony against him, but their testimony did not agree.	56 Molti, infatti, attestavano il falso contro di lui, ma le testimonianze non eran concordi.
57 And certain ones, rising up, bore false witness against him, saying:	57 Alcuni si levarono e testimoniarono il falso contro di lui dicendo:
58 “For we heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple, made with hands, and within three days I will build another, not made with hands.’ ”	58 «L’abbiamo udito dire: “Io distruggerò questo tempio fatto con le mani dell’uomo e in tre giorni ne edificherò uno non fatto da mano d’uomo”».
59 And their testimony did not agree.	59 Ma, anche su questo, le loro testimonianze non eran concordi.
60 And the high priest, rising up in their midst, questioned Jesus, saying, “Do you have nothing to say in answer to the things that are brought against you by these ones?”	60 Allora il sommo sacerdote si levò in mezzo e interrogò Gesù: «Non rispondi nulla? Che cosa attestano costoro contro di te?»
61 But he was silent and gave no answer. Again, the high priest questioned him, and he said to him, “Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed God?”	61 Egli, però, taceva e non rispose nulla. Il sommo sacerdote lo interrogò di nuovo: «Tu sei il Messia, il Figlio del Benedetto?»
62 Then Jesus said to him: “I am. And you shall see the Son of man sitting at the right hand of the power of God and arriving with the clouds of heaven.”	62 Gesù disse: «Io lo sono! E vedrete il Figlio dell’uomo sedere a destra della Potenza e venire con le nubi del cielo».
63 Then the high priest, rending his garments, said: “Why do we still require witnesses?	63 Il sommo sacerdote, allora, stracciandosi le tuniche, dice: «Che bisogno abbiamo più di testimoni?
64 You have heard the blasphemy. How does it seem to you?” And they all condemned him, as guilty unto death.	64 Voi avete sentito la bestemmia! Che ve ne pare?» Tutti sentenziarono che egli era reo di morte.
65 And some began to spit on him, and to cover his face and to strike him with fists, and to say to him, “Prophesy.” And the servants struck him with the palms their hands.	65 E alcuni si misero a sputargli addosso, a velargli il volto, a schiaffeggiarlo e a dirgli: «Fa il profeta!» E i servi lo presero a schiaffi.
66 And while Peter was in the court below, one of the maidservants of the high priest arrived.	66 Mentre Pietro stava giù nel cortile, arriva una delle serve del sommo sacerdote
67 And when she had seen Peter warming himself, she stared at him, and she said: “You also were with Jesus of Nazareth.”	67 e, visto Pietro che si scaldava, lo fissa e gli dice: «Anche tu eri col Nazareno, con Gesù».
68 But he denied it, saying, “I neither know nor understand what you saying.” And he went outside, in front of the court; and a rooster crowed.	68 Ma egli negò: «Non so, non capisco ciò che dici». E uscì fuori nel vestibolo, e un gallo cantò.
69 Then again, when a maidservant had seen him, she began to say to the bystanders, “For this is one of them.”	69 Ma la serva, vedutolo, cominciò di nuovo a dire agli astanti: «Costui è di quelli!»
70 But he denied it again. And after a little while, again those standing near said to Peter: “In truth, you are one of them. For you, too, are a Galilean.”	70 Ma egli ancora negava. Poco dopo, gli astanti dicevano di nuovo a Pietro: «Tu sei davvero di quelli; perché sei galileo».
71 Then he began to curse and to swear, saying, “For I do not know this man, about whom you are speaking.”	71 Ma egli cominciò a imprecare e a giurare: «Non conosco l’uomo di cui parlate».
72 And immediately the rooster crowed again. And Peter remembered the word that Jesus had said to him, “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.” And he began to weep.	72 E subito, per la seconda volta, un gallo cantò. E Pietro si ricordò della parola dettagli da Gesù: «Prima che il gallo abbia cantato due volte, tre volte mi avrai rinnegato». E proruppe in pianto.
