1 And so, when Jesus had been born in Bethlehem of Judah, in the days of king Herod, behold, Magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem,	1 Nato Gesù in Bethlemme di Giudea, al tempo del re Erode, ecco che dei Magi, venuti da Oriente, si presentarono a Gerusalemme dicendo:
2 saying: “Where is he who was born king of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the east, and we have come to adore him.”	2 «Dov'è il re dei Giudei ch’è nato? Poiché abbiam veduto la sua stella ad oriente e siamo venuti ad adorarlo».
3 Now king Herod, hearing this, was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him.	3 Udito ciò, il re Erode si turbò, e tutta Gerusalemme con lui;
4 And gathering together all the leaders of the priests, and the scribes of the people, he consulted with them as to where the Christ would be born.	4 e radunati tutti i gran sacerdoti e gli scribi del popolo, si informava da loro dove dovesse nascere il messia.
5 And they said to him: “In Bethlehem of Judea. For so it has been written by the prophet:	5 Ed essi gli risposero: «In Bethlemme di Giudea; così, difatti, è stato scritto dal profeta:
6 ‘And you, Bethlehem, the land of Judah, are by no means least among the leaders of Judah. For from you shall go forth the ruler who shall guide my people Israel.’ ”	6 E tu, Bethlemme, terra di Giuda, in nessun modo sei minima fra le grandi città di Giuda: da te, infatti, nascerà un capo, che sarà pastore del mio popolo, Israele».
7 Then Herod, quietly calling the Magi, diligently learned from them the time when the star appeared to them.	7 Allora Erode, chiamati segretamente i Magi, si fece precisare il tempo dell’apparizione della stella e, inviandoli a Bethlemme, disse:
8 And sending them into Bethlehem, he said: “Go and diligently ask questions about the boy. And when you have found him, report back to me, so that I, too, may come and adore him.”	8 «Andate e informatevi accuratamente del bambino; e, quando lo avrete trovato, fatemelo sapere, affinché anch’io venga ad adorarlo».
9 And when they had heard the king, they went away. And behold, the star that they had seen in the east went before them, even until, arriving, it stood still above the place where the child was.	9 Udito il re, quelli partirono. Ed ecco la stella che avevano veduta all’oriente li precedeva, finché, giunta sul luogo dov’era il bambino, si fermò.
10 Then, seeing the star, they were gladdened by a very great joy.	10 La vista della stella li rallegrò di grandissima gioia.
11 And entering the home, they found the boy with his mother Mary. And so, falling prostrate, they adored him. And opening their treasures, they offered him gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.	11 Ed entrati nella casa, videro il bambino con Maria sua madre e, prostratisi, lo adorarono; poi, aperti i loro scrigni, gli presentarono in dono oro, incenso e mirra.
12 And having received a response in sleep that they should not return to Herod, they went back by another way to their own region.	12 È, divinamente avvertiti in sogno di non tornare da Erode, ritornarono per altra via al loro paese.
13 And after they had gone away, behold, an Angel of the Lord appeared in sleep to Joseph, saying: “Rise up, and take the boy and his mother, and flee into Egypt. And remain there until I tell you. For it will happen that Herod will seek the boy to destroy him.”	13 Dopo la loro partenza, un angelo del Signore appare in sogno a Giuseppe e gli dice; «Levati, prendi con te il bambino e sua madre e fuggi in Egitto, e resta lì finché io te lo dica: poiché Erode si accinge a ricercare il bambino per farlo perire.».
14 And getting up, he took the boy and his mother by night, and withdrew into Egypt.	14 Giuseppe si levò, prese con sé, di notte, il bambino e sua madre, e si ritirò in Egitto,
15 And he remained there, until the death of Herod, in order to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: “Out of Egypt, I called my son.”	15 dove stette fino alla morte di Erode; affinché si adempisse quanto il Signore aveva detto per mezzo del profeta: Dall’Egitto ho chiamato mio figlio.
16 Then Herod, seeing that he had been fooled by the Magi, was very angry. And so he sent to kill all the boys who were in Bethlehem, and in all its borders, from two years of age and under, according to the time that he had learned by questioning the Magi.	16 Erode, allora, vistosi beffato dai Magi, si infuriò e mandò ad uccidere, in Bethlemme e in tutto il suo territorio, tutti i bambini di meno di due anni, secondo il tempo di cui si era accuratamente informato dai Magi.
17 Then what was spoken through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled, saying:	17 Allora si adempì quanto era stato detto dal profeta Geremia:
18 “A voice has been heard in Ramah, great weeping and wailing: Rachel crying for her sons. And she was not willing to be consoled, because they were no more.”	18 In Rama s’è sentita una voce, un pianto e lamento grande: è Rachele che piange i suoi figli, né vuol consolarsi, perché non sono più.
19 Then, when Herod had passed away, behold, an Angel of the Lord appeared in sleep to Joseph in Egypt,	19 Morto Erode, ecco che un angelo del Signore appare in sogno a Giuseppe, in Egitto,
20 saying: “Rise up, and take the boy and his mother, and go into the land of Israel. For those who were seeking the life of the boy have passed away.”	20 e gli dice: «Levati, prendi con te il bambino e sua madre e ritorna nella terra d’Israele, perché sono morti quelli che attentavano alla vita del bambino».
21 And rising up, he took the boy and his mother, and he went into the land of Israel.	21 E quegli, levatosi, prese con sé il bambino e sua madre e rientrò nella terra d’Israele.
22 Then, hearing that Archelaus reigned in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. And being warned in sleep, he withdrew into parts of Galilee.	22 Ma, apprendendo che Archelao regnava in Giudea al posto di suo padre Erode, ebbe paura di andarvi; e, divinamente avvertito in sogno, si ritirò nella regione di Galilea
23 And arriving, he lived in a city which is called Nazareth, in order to fulfill what was spoken through the prophets: “For he shall be called a Nazarene.”	23 È venne a stabilirsi in una città che si chiama Nazaret, affinché si adempisse quanto era stato detto per mezzo dei profeti: Sarà chiamato Nazareno.
