1 And the word of the Lord came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying:	1 La parole du Seigneur fut adressée à Jonas, fils d'Amathi, en ces termes:
2 Rise and go to Nineveh, the great city, and preach in it. For its malice has ascended before my eyes.	2 Lève-toi, et va à Ninive, la grande ville, et prêches-y, car sa malice est montée jusqu'à Moi.
3 And Jonah rose in order to flee from the face of the Lord to Tarshish. And he went down to Joppa and found a ship bound for Tarshish. And he paid its fare, and he went down into it, in order to go with them to Tarshish from the face of the Lord.	3 Et Jonas se leva, pour fuir à Tharsis de devant la face du Seigneur; il descendit à Joppé, et trouva un vaisseau qui allait à Tharsis; il paya son passage et y entra pour aller avec les autres à Tharsis, loin de la face du Seigneur.
4 But the Lord sent a great wind into the sea. And a great tempest took place in the sea, and the ship was in danger of being crushed.	4 Mais le Seigneur envoya un grand vent sur la mer; et une grande tempête s'éleva sur la mer, et le vaisseau était en danger d'être brisé.
5 And the mariners were afraid, and the men cried out to their god. And they threw the containers that were in the ship into the sea in order to lighten it of them. And Jonah went down into the interior of the ship, and he fell into a painful deep sleep.	5 Les matelots eurent peur, et ils crièrent chacun vers son dieu, et ils jetèrent à la mer les objets qui étaient sur le vaisseau, afin de l'alléger. Cependant Jonas était descendu au fond du navire, et il dormait d'un lourd sommeil.
6 And the helmsman approached him, and he said to him, “Why are you weighed down with sleep? Rise, call upon your God, so perhaps God will be mindful of us and we might not perish.”	6 Et le pilote s'approcha de lui et lui dit: Pourquoi te laisses-tu accabler par le sommeil? Lève-toi, invoque ton Dieu; peut-être Dieu pensera-t-Il à nous, et nous ne périrons pas.
7 And a man said to his shipmate, “Come, and let us cast lots, so that we may know why this disaster is upon us.” And they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.	7 Et ils se dirent l'un à l'autre: Venez, et jetons le sort, pour savoir d'où nous vient ce malheur. Et ils jetèrent le sort, et le sort tomba sur Jonas.
8 And they said to him: “Explain to us what is the reason that this disaster is upon us. What is your work? Which is your country? And where are you going? Or which people are you from?”	8 Alors ils lui dirent: Indique-nous la cause qui nous attire ce malheur; quelle est ton occupation? quel est ton pays, et où vas-tu? de quel peuple es-tu?
9 And he said to them, “I am Hebrew, and I fear the Lord God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.”	9 Il leur dit: Je suis Hébreu, et je sers le Seigneur, le Dieu du ciel, qui a fait la mer et la terre.
10 And the men were greatly afraid, and they said to him, “Why have you done this?” (For the men knew that he was fleeing from the face of the Lord, because he had told them.)	10 Ces hommes furent saisis d'une grande crainte, et ils lui dirent: Pourquoi as-tu fait cela? Car ils avaient su qu'il fuyait de devant la face du Seigneur, parce qu'il le leur avait indiqué.
11 And they said to him, “What are we to do with you, so that the sea will cease for us?” For the sea flowed and swelled.	11 Ils lui dirent: Que te ferons-nous, afin que la mer se calme pour nous? car la mer s'élevait et se gonflait.
12 And he said to them, “Take me, and cast me into the sea, and the sea will cease for you. For I know that it is because of me that this great tempest has come upon you.”	12 Il leur dit: Prenez-moi et jetez-moi dans la mer, et la mer se calmera pour vous; car je sais que c'est à cause de moi que cette grande tempête est venue sur vous.
13 And the men were rowing, so as to return to dry land, but they did not succeed. For the sea flowed and swelled against them.	13 Ces hommes ramaient pour regagner la terre; mais ils ne le pouvaient, parce que la mer s'élevait et se gonflait contre eux.
14 And they cried out to the Lord, and they said, “We beseech you, Lord, do not let us perish for this man’s life, and do not attribute to us innocent blood. For you, Lord, have done just as it pleased you.”	14 Alors ils crièrent au Seigneur et dirent: Nous Vous en prions, Seigneur, ne nous faites pas périr à cause de la vie de cet homme, et ne faites pas retomber sur nous le sang innocent, parce que Vous, Seigneur, Vous avez fait ce que Vous avez voulu.
15 And they took Jonah and cast him into the sea. And the sea was stilled from its fury.	15 Puis ils prirent Jonas, et ils le jetèrent dans la mer; et la fureur de la mer s'apaisa.
16 And the men feared the Lord greatly, and they sacrificed victims to the Lord, and they made vows.	16 Ces hommes furent saisis d'une grande crainte envers le Seigneur, et ils immolèrent des victimes au Seigneur et firent des voeux.
