CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
Let there be a trumpet in your throat, like an eagle over the house of the Lord, on behalf of those who have transgressed my covenant and violated my law.1 A trumpet to your lips, You who watch over the house of the LORD! Since they have violated my covenant, and sinned against my law,
They will call on me: “O my God, we, Israel, know you.”2 While to me they cry out, "O, God of Israel, we know you!"
Israel has thrown away goodness; the enemy will overtake him.3 The men of Israel have thrown away what is good; the enemy shall pursue them.
They have reigned, but not by me. Leaders have emerged, and I did not recognize them. Their silver and their gold, they have made into idols for themselves, so that they might cross over.4 They made kings, but not by my authority; they established princes, but without my approval. With their silver and gold they made idols for themselves, to their own destruction.
Your calf, Samaria, has been rejected. My fury has been enraged against them. How long will they be incapable of being cleansed?5 Cast away your calf, O Samaria! my wrath is kindled against them; How long will they be unable to attain innocence in Israel?
For it is itself also from Israel: a workman made it, and it is not God. For the calf of Samaria will be used for the webs of spiders.6 The work of an artisan no god at all, Destined for the flames-- such is the calf of Samaria!
For they will sow wind and reap a whirlwind. It does not have a firm stalk; the bud will yield no grain. But if it does yield, strangers will eat it.7 When they sow the wind, they shall reap the whirlwind; The stalk of grain that forms no ear can yield no flour; Even if it could, strangers would swallow it.
Israel has been devoured. Now, among the nations, it has become like an unclean vessel.8 Israel is swallowed up; he is now among the nations a thing of no value.
For they have gone up to Assur, a wild ass alone by himself. Ephraim has given presents to his lovers.9 They went up to Assyria-- a wild ass off on its own-- Ephraim bargained for lovers.
But even when they will have brought the nations together for the sake of money, now I will assemble them. And they will rest for a little while from the burden of the king and the leaders.10 Even though they bargain with the nations, I will now gather an army; King and princes shall shortly succumb under the burden.
For Ephraim multiplied altars to sin, and sanctuaries have become an offense for him.11 When Ephraim made many altars to expiate sin, his altars became occasions of sin.
I will write to him my intricate laws, which have been treated like strangers.12 Though I write for him my many ordinances, they are considered as a stranger's.
They will offer victims, they will immolate flesh and will eat, and the Lord will not accept them. For now he will remember their iniquity, and he will repay their sins: they will be turned back to Egypt.13 Though they offer sacrifice, immolate flesh and eat it, the LORD is not pleased with them. He shall still remember their guilt and punish their sins; they shall return to Egypt.
And Israel has forgotten his Maker and has built shrines. And Judah has increased its fortified cities. And I will send fire upon his cities, and it will devour its structures.14 Israel has forgotten his maker and built palaces. Judah, too, has fortified many cities, but I will send fire upon his cities, to devour their castles.
