1 The words of Jeremiah, the son of Hilkiah of the priests who were in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin.	1 Paroles de Jérémie, fils d'Helcias, l'un des prêtres qui étaient à Anathoth, dans la terre de Benjamin.
2 The word of the Lord, which came to him in the days of Josiah, the son of Amon, king of Judah, in the thirteenth year of his reign,	2 La parole du Seigneur lui fut adressée au temps de Josias, fils d'Amon, roi de Juda, la treizième année de son règne.
3 and which came to him in the days of Jehoiakim, the son of Josiah, king of Judah, even until the completion of the eleventh year of Zedekiah, the son of Josiah, king of Judah, even until the transmigration of Jerusalem in the fifth month.	3 Elle lui fut encore adressée au temps de Joakim, fils de Josias, roi de Juda, jusqu'à la fin de la onzième année de Sédécias, fils de Josias, roi de Juda, jusqu'au temps de la transmigration de Jérusalem, au cinquième mois.
4 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying:	4 La parole du Seigneur me fut (donc) adressée en ces termes :
5 “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you. And before you went forth from the womb, I sanctified you. And I made you a prophet to the nations.”	5 Avant que je t'eusse formé dans les entrailles de ta mère, je t'ai connu ; avant que tu fusses sorti de son sein, je t'ai sanctifié, et je t'ai établi prophète parmi les nations.
6 And I said: “Alas, alas, alas, Lord God! Behold, I do not know how to speak, for I am a boy.”	6 Je répondis : A(h), a(h), a(h), Seigneur Dieu, (voyez,) je ne sais pas parler, car je suis un enfant.
7 And the Lord said to me: “Do not choose to say, ‘I am a boy.’ For you shall go forth to everyone to whom I will send you. And you shall speak all that I will command you.	7 Et le Seigneur me dit : Ne dis pas : Je suis un enfant ; car tu iras partout où je t'enverrai, et tu diras tout ce que je te commanderai.
8 You should not be afraid before their face. For I am with you, so that I may deliver you,” says the Lord.	8 Ne les crains pas (à cause d'eux, note), car je suis avec toi pour te délivrer, dit le Seigneur.
9 And the Lord put forth his hand, and he touched my mouth. And the Lord said to me: “Behold, I have placed my words in your mouth.	9 Alors le Seigneur étendit sa main et toucha ma bouche, et le Seigneur me dit : Voici que je mets (j'ai mis) mes paroles dans ta bouche ;
10 Behold, today I have appointed you over nations and over kingdoms, so that you may root up, and pull down, and destroy, and scatter, and so that you may build and plant.”	10 voici que je t'établis aujourd'hui sur les nations et sur les royaumes, pour que tu arraches et que tu détruises, et pour que tu perdes, et pour que tu dissipes, et pour que tu bâtisses, et pour que tu plantes.
11 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, “What do you see, Jeremiah?” And I said, “I see a staff, keeping watch.”	11 La parole du Seigneur me fut (encore) adressée en ces termes : Que vois-tu, Jérémie ? Je répondis : Je vois une branche (verge) qui veille.
12 And the Lord said to me: “You have seen well. For I will keep watch over my word, so that I may accomplish it.”	12 Et le Seigneur me dit : Tu as bien vu, car je veillerai sur ma parole pour l'accomplir.
13 And the word of the Lord came to me a second time, saying, “What do you see?” And I said, “I see a cooking pot upon a fire, and its face is before the face of the north.”	13 La parole du Seigneur me fut adressée une seconde fois en ces termes : Que vois-tu ? Je répondis : Je vois une chaudière (marmite) bouillante, qui (sa face, note) vient du côté (de la face) de l'aquilon.
14 And the Lord said to me: “From the north, an evil will spread over all the inhabitants of the earth.	14 Et le Seigneur me dit : C'est de l'aquilon que le malheur fondra sur tous les habitants du pays ;
15 For behold, I will call together all the close associates of the kingdoms of the north, says the Lord. And they will arrive, and each one of them will place his throne at the entrance to the gates of Jerusalem, and over all its surrounding walls, and over all the cities of Judah.	15 car voici que je vais appeler tous les peuples (familles) des royaumes de l'aquilon, dit le Seigneur ; et ils (elles) viendront, et ils (elles) établiront chacun(e) leur siège (trône) à l'entrée des portes de Jérusalem, et tout autour de ses murailles, et dans toutes les villes de Juda ;
16 And I will speak my judgments with them, concerning all the wickedness of those who have forsaken me, and who have offered libations to strange gods, and who have adored the work of their own hands.	16 et je prononcerai mes jugements contre eux, à cause de toute la malice de ceux qui m'ont abandonné, qui ont offert des libations aux (à des) dieux étrangers, et qui ont adoré l'œuvre de leurs mains.
17 Therefore, you should gird your waist, and rise up, and speak to them everything that I instruct you. You should not have dread before their face. For I will cause you to be unafraid of their countenance.	17 Toi donc, ceins tes reins, et lève-toi, et dis-leur tout ce que (moi) je t'ordonne. Ne redoute pas de paraître devant eux, car je ferai que tu ne craignes pas leur présence (visage).
18 For certainly, this day, I have made you like a fortified city, and an iron pillar, and a brass wall, over all the land, to the kings of Judah, to its leaders, and to the priests, and to the people of the land.	18 Car je t'établis (je t'ai établi) aujourd'hui comme une ville forte, comme une colonne de fer et un mur d'airain sur tout le pays, à l'égard des (contre les) rois de Juda, (de) ses princes, (de) ses prêtres et (de) son peuple.
19 And they will make war against you, but they will not prevail. For I am with you, says the Lord, so that I may free you.”	19 Ils combattront contre toi, mais ils n'auront pas l'avantage, car je suis avec toi pour te délivrer, dit le Seigneur.
