Let the islands be silent before me, and let the nations take new strength. Let them draw near, and then speak. Let us apply for judgment together.1 Calem-se diante de mim as ilhas, e tomem os povos novas forças; aproximem-se, e então falem; vamos juntos a juízo.
Who has raised up a just man from the east, and has called him to follow him? He will place the nations under his gaze, and he will rule over kings. He will cause them to be like dust before his sword, like chaff driven by the wind before his bow.2 Quem suscitou do oriente aquele, cujos passos a justiça acompanha? Quem lhe entregou as nações e lhe submeteu os reis? A sua espada redu-los a pó, e o seu arco dispersa-os como palha arrebatada pelo vento.
He will pursue them. He will pass by in peace. No trace will appear after his feet.3 Ele os persegue e continua a caminhar em paz (tão velozmente que) não aparecerá o rasto dos seus pés.
Who has worked and accomplished these things, calling to the generations from the beginning? “It is I, the Lord! I am the first and the last.”4 Quem fez, quem levou a cabo estas coisas? Aquele que chamou as gerações desde o princípio, eu que sou o Senhor, eu que sou {1:o primeiro] e me encontrarei também com os últimos.
The islands saw it and were afraid. The ends of the earth were stupefied. They drew near and arrived.5 As ilhas vêem e tremem, as extremidades da terra pasmam; aproximam-se e vêm.
Each one will help his neighbor and will say to his brother, “Be strengthened.”6 Auxiliam-se mutuamente (nesta longa empresa), e um diz ao outro: Tem coragem.
The coppersmith striking with the mallet encouraged him who was forging at that time, saying, “It is ready for soldering.” And he strengthened it with nails, so that it would not be moved.7 O oficial de bronze, batendo com o martelo, anima o que bate na bigorna, dizendo: Isto é bom para soldar: e segura (o ídolo) com pregos, para que não se mova.
But you, O Israel, are my servant, O Jacob, whom I have chosen, the offspring of my friend Abraham.8 Porém, tu, Israel, servo meu, tu, Jacob a quem escolhi, tu, linhagem do meu amigo Abraão;
For his sake, I have taken you from the ends of the earth, and I have called you from its distant places. And I said to you: “You are my servant. I have chosen you, and I have not cast you aside.”9 tu, a quem eu tomei das extremidades da terra e chamei dos seus países remotos, a quem disse: Tu és meu servo, eu te escolhi e não te rejeitei
Do not be afraid, for I am with you. Do not turn away, for I am your God. I have strengthened you, and I have assisted you, and the right hand of my just one has upheld you.10 não temas, porque eu sou contigo, não olhes perdidamente, porque eu sou o teu Deus; eu te confortei, te auxiliei, e a dextra da minha justiça te ampara.
Behold, all who fight against you shall be confounded and ashamed. They will be as if they did not exist, and the men who contradict you will perish.11 Serão confundidos, ficarão cobertos de vergonha todos aqueles que pelejam contra ti; serão como se não fossem, perecerão, aqueles que te contradizem.
You will seek them, and you will not find them. The men who rebel against you will be as if they did not exist. And the men who make war against you will be like something that has been consumed.12 Tu buscarás esses homens que se levantam contra ti, e não os acharás; serão como se não fossem, ficarão reduzidos a nada, os homens que te fazem guerra.
For I am the Lord your God. I take you by your hand, and I say to you: Do not be afraid. I have helped you.13 Porque eu, o Senhor teu Deus, tomo-te pela mão e te digo: Não temas, eu vou em teu auxílio.
Fear not, O worm of Jacob, you who are dead within Israel. I have helped you, says the Lord, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel.14 Não temas, ó vermezinho de Jacob, pobre resto de Israel! Eu sou o teu auxílio, diz o Senhor: o teu Redentor é o Santo de Israel.
I have established you like a new threshing cart, having serrated blades. You will thresh the mountains and crush them. And you will turn the hills into chaff.15 Farei de ti uma grade nova armada de dentes agudos. Calcarás, esterroarás os montes e reduzirás a pó os outeiros.
You will winnow them, and the wind will blow them away, and the whirlwind will scatter them. And you shall exult in the Lord; you shall rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.16 Tu os joeirarás, levá-los-á o vento, e a tempestade os espalhará. E tu exultarás no Senhor, glorificar-te-ás no Santo de Israel.
The indigent and the poor are seeking water, but there is none. Their tongue has been dried up by thirst. I, the Lord, will heed them. I, the God of Israel, will not abandon them.17 Os necessitados, os pobres buscam água, e não a há; a sua língua está seca de sede. Eu, o Senhor, os atenderei, eu, o Deus de Israel, não os desampararei.
I will open rivers in the high hills, and fountains in the midst of the plains. I will turn the desert into pools of water, and the impassable land into streams of water.18 Farei brotar rios nas alturas escalvadas, e fontes no meio dos vales; transformarei o deserto num reservatório, e a terra árida em arroios de água.
I will plant the cedar in a deserted place, with the thorn, and the myrtle, and the olive tree. In the desert, I will plant the pine, and the elm, and the box tree together,19 Farei nascer no deserto o cedro, a acácia, a murta e a oliveira; porei na solidão, juntamente, o cipreste, o olmeiro e o buxo,
so that they may see and know, acknowledge and understand, together, that the hand of the Lord has accomplished this, and that the Holy One of Israel has created it.20 para que todos vejam, saibam, considerem e compreendam que a mão do Senhor é que fez estas coisas, que o Santo de Israel é o autor.
Bring your case forward, says the Lord. Bring it here, if you have anything to allege, says the King of Jacob.21 Vinde (ó deuses falsos) defender a vossa causa, diz o Senhor; alegai as vossas razões, diz o rei de Jacob.
Let them approach and announce to us the things that will occur. Announce to us the things that were before. And we will apply our heart to them, and we will know their end. And so, reveal to us the things that will occur.22 Venham, e anunciem-nos todas as coisas que estão para acontecer. Relatai as antigas, e pôr-nos-emos a escutá-las de todo o nosso coração, a fim de podermos verificar o seu cumprimento. Ou então anunciai-nos o que há-de acontecer.
Announce the things that will occur in the future, and we will know that you are gods. Likewise, accomplish good or evil, if you are able, and let us speak of it and see it together.23 Anunciai (ó ídolos) o que há-de acontecer para o futuro, e (então) ficaremos sabendo que vós sois deuses. Fazei bem ou mal, (qualquer coisa) a fim de que nos possamos medir (eu convosco).
Behold, you exist out of nothing, and your work is from what does not exist; he who has chosen you is an abomination.24 Mas vós sois nada, e a vossa obra nada é: abominável (por isso) quem vos escolhe (para vos adorar como deuses).
I have raised up one from the north, and he will arrive from the rising of the sun. He will call upon my name, and he will reduce magistrates to mud, like a potter working with clay.25 Eu o suscitei do Aquilão, e ele já vem donde nasce o Sol; invoca o meu nome e calca os grandes como lodo, faz como o oleiro que pisa o barro.
Who has announced this from its rising, so that we may know it, or from its beginning, so that we may say, “You are just.” There is no one who either announces, or predicts, or hears your words.26 Quem (além de mim) anunciou isto desde o princípio, para que nós o saibamos, desde o princípio, para que digamos: É verdade? Não! Ninguém anunciou, ninguém predisse! Ninguém ouviu os nossos oráculos.
The first one will say to Zion: “Behold, they are here,” and to Jerusalem, “I will present an evangelist.”27 Eu fui o primeiro a dizer a Sião: Ei-los aqui - e enviei a Jerusalém a boa nova.
And I saw, and there was no one among any of them to consult, or who, when I asked, could answer a word.28 Olhei, e não havia ali ninguém, nenhum conselheiro que, interrogado, respondesse palavra.
Behold, they are all unjust, and their works are empty. Their idols are wind and emptiness.29 Todos eles são nada, vãs as suas obras; inanes como o vento, os seus ídolos.
