Sirach 44

1 Let us praise the men of glory, and our ancestors in their generation.	1 Louons ces hommes illustres, nos pères, dont nous sommes la race.
2 The Lord has wrought great glory, by his own magnificence, from ancient times.	2 Le Seigneur a opéré beaucoup de merveilles, et signalé Sa puissance dès le commencement.
3 There are those who rule with their authority, men of great virtue, who are gifted with prudence. There are those who announce among the prophets, with the dignity of prophets.	3 Ils ont dominé dans leurs Etats; ils ont été des hommes grands en puissance et doués de prudence; les prédictions qu'ils ont annoncées leur ont acquis la dignité de prophètes;
4 And there are those who rule over the present generation, by the virtue of prudence, with very holy words for the people.	4 ils ont commandé au peuple de leur temps, et les nations ont reçu de la solidité de leur sagesse des paroles toutes saintes;
5 There are those who, by their skill, compose musical themes, so as to set the verses of Scripture to music.	5 ils ont inventé par leur habileté des accords harmonieux, et ils ont publié les cantiques des Ecritures;
6 There are men rich in virtue, who make a study of beauty, who live in peacefulness in their houses.	6 ils ont été riches en vertu, ils ont eu le goût de la beauté, et ils ont établi la paix dans leurs maisons.
7 All these obtained glory in their generations, and they had praise in their days.	7 Ils ont tous acquis la gloire parmi les générations de leur peuple, et de leur temps ils ont été loués.
8 They left behind a name for those who were born of them, so that their praises might be described.	8 Ceux qui sont nés d'eux ont laissé un nom qui fait publier leur louange.
9 But for some of them, there is no memorial. They have passed away as if they had never existed; and they have become as if they had never been born, and their sons along with them.	9 Il en est d'autres dont on a perdu le souvenir; ils ont péri comme s'ils n'avaient jamais existé; ils sont nés comme s'ils n'étaient jamais nés, eux et leurs enfants.
10 But these were men of mercy, whose pious deeds have not failed.	10 Quant aux premiers, ce sont des hommes de miséricorde, dont les oeuvres de piété subsistent à jamais.
11 Good things continue with their offspring.	11 Les biens qu'ils ont laissés demeurent à leur postérité;
12 Their descendents are a holy inheritance, and their offspring stand firm in the covenants.	12 leurs descendants sont un saint héritage, et leur race est demeurée fidèle à l'alliance;
13 And because of them, their sons remain even unto eternity. Their offspring and their glory will not be forsaken.	13 à cause d'eux, leurs fils subsistent éternellement, et ni leur race ni leur gloire n'aura de fin.
14 Their bodies were buried in peace, and their name lives on, from generation to generation.	14 Leurs corps ont été ensevelis en paix, et leur nom vivra de génération en génération.
15 Let the people declare their wisdom, and let the Church announce their praise.	15 Que les peuples racontent leur sagesse, et que l'assemblée publie leurs louanges.
16 Enoch pleased God, and he was transferred to Paradise, so that he might offer repentance to the nations.	16 Enoch a plu à Dieu, et il a été transporté dans le paradis, pour exciter les nations à la pénitence.
17 Noah was found to be perfect and just, and so, in the time of wrath, he was made a reconciliation.	17 Noé a été trouvé parfait et juste, et au temps de la colère il est devenu la réconciliation des hommes.
18 As a result, there was a remnant left for the earth, when the great flood was made.	18 C'est pourquoi un reste fut laissé à la terre, lorsque le déluge survint.
19 The covenants of the world were placed with him, so that all flesh would not be wiped away by the great flood.	19 Une alliance éternelle a été faite avec lui, afin que la race humaine ne pût être exterminée par le déluge.
20 Abraham was the great father of a multitude of nations, and no one was found to be like him in glory. He observed the law of the Most High, and he formed a covenant with him.	20 Abraham est le glorieux père d'une multitude de nations, et nul ne lui a été trouvé semblable en gloire; il a conservé la loi du Très-Haut, et Il a contracté une alliance avec lui.
21 In his flesh, he caused the covenant to stand, and when tested, he was found to be faithful.	21 Le Seigneur a affermi Son alliance dans sa chair, et dans la tentation il a été trouvé fidèle.
22 Therefore, by an oath, he gave glory to him among his people, so as to increase him like the dust of the earth,	22 C'est pourquoi Il lui a juré de le glorifier dans sa race, et de le multiplier comme la poussière de la terre,
23 and to exalt his offspring like the stars, and to give an inheritance to them from sea to sea, and from the river even to the ends of the earth.	23 d'exalter sa race comme les étoiles, et d'étendre leur héritage d'une mer à l'autre, et depuis le fleuve jusqu'aux extrémités de la terre.
24 And he acted in like manner toward Isaac, because of his father Abraham.	24 Il a traité Isaac de la même manière à cause d'Abraham son père.
25 The Lord gave the blessing of all the nations to him, and he confirmed his covenant upon the head of Jacob.	25 Le Seigneur lui a promis de bénir en lui toutes les nations, et Il a confirmé Son alliance sur la tête de Jacob.
26 He acknowledged him in his blessings, and he gave an inheritance to him, and he distributed to him the portion of the twelve tribes.	26 Il l'a distingué par Ses bénédictions, lui a donné un héritage, et le lui a partagé entre douze tribus.
27 And he preserved for him men of mercy, who were found to have grace before the eyes of all flesh.	27 Et Il lui a conservé des hommes de miséricorde, qui ont trouvé grâce aux yeux de toute chair.
