Sirach 42

1 You should not repeat a claim heard from the revealing of a hidden word. And then, truly, you will be without shame, and you will find favor in the sight of all men. You should not accept the reputation of someone, so that you would sin, nor should you be confounded in any of the following things:	1 Não repitas o que tiveres ouvido, não reveles um segredo; assim serás verdadeiramente isento de confusão, e acharás graça diante de todos os homens. Não te envergonhes de coisa alguma das que te vou dizer, e não tenhas respeito humano, até ao ponto de pecar.
2 in the law of the Most High and his covenant, or by giving a judgment to justify the impious;	2 Não te envergonhes da lei do Altíssimo e da sua aliança, da sentença que absolve o ímpio (naquilo em que está inocente),
3 in a word among companions and fellow travelers, or by distributing the inheritance of friends;	3 de tratar com companheiros e peregrinos, de legar os bens aos amigos,
4 in the fairness of scales and weights, or in acquiring much or little;	4 da fidelidade da balança e dos pesos, da aquisição do muito ou do pouco,
5 by the corruption of buying and negotiating, or in the ample discipline of children, or in causing the side of a wicked servant to bleed.	5 do preço da venda dos negociantes, da correcção freqüente dos filhos, de açoutar o dorso do escravo péssimo até que salte o sangue.
6 A seal is good over a wicked wife.	6 Sobre a mulher má, bom é pôr-se o selo.
7 Where there are many hands, seal and deliver all things by number and weight; and truly, give and receive everything in writing.	7 Onde há muitas mãos, guarda (tudo) fechado, e, tudo quanto entregares, dá-o por conta e por peso; aponta tudo o que deres e receberes.
8 You should not have shame in correcting the senseless, the foolish, and those youths who would judge their elders. And so shall you be well-instructed in all things and well-approved in the sight of all the living.	8 (Não te envergonhes) de corrigir o insensato e o néscio, nem (de defender) os velhos, que são condenados pelos jovens; assim te mostrarás sábio em tudo, e serás bem visto diante de todos os vivos.
9 The vigilance of a father for his daughter is hidden, and his concern for her takes away his sleep. For perhaps, in her adolescence, she might be brought into adulthood. Or when she lives with her husband, she might become hateful.	9 Uma filha é para seu pai uma oculta preocupação, o cuidado dela tira-lhe o sono: receia que passe a flor da sua idade sem se casar, ou que, quando enfim estiver com seu marido, lhe seja odiosa;
10 In her virginity, she might be defiled, and then she may be found to be pregnant in her father’s house. Or perhaps, when she lives with her husband, she might stray, or at least become barren.	10 receia que na sua virgindade seja corrompida, e se ache pejada na casa de seu pai, ou que, habitando com seu marido, falte à fé conjugal, ou seja estéril.
11 Keep a close watch over a self-indulgent daughter. Otherwise, at some time, she might bring you into disgrace before your enemies, and into disrepute in the city, and into reproach among the people, and so she may confound you before the multitude of the people.	11 Sobre a filha desenvolta vigia com dobrado resguardo, para que não faça de ti o opróbrio dos teus inimigos, o objecto de detracção da cidade e do ludíbrio da plebe, e te envergonhe diante da multidão do povo.
12 She should not choose to gaze upon the beauty of every man, and she should not choose to spend her time in the midst of married women.	12 Não fixes os olhos sobre a beleza de ninguém, nem te detenhas no meio de mulheres.
13 For a moth goes forth from garments, and iniquity over a man goes forth from a woman.	13 porque dos vestidos sai a traça, e da mulher a maldade do homem.
14 Yet iniquity over a man is better for her than if a married woman, seeking to benefit her, instead leads her into confusion and disgrace.	14 É melhor a malvadez do homem que a bondade da mulher, quando esta é um motivo de confusão e de vergonha.
15 And now, I will remember the works of the Lord, and I will announce what I have seen. The words of the Lord are in his works.	15 Lembrar-me-ei das obras do Senhor, e anunciarei o que tenho visto. Pelas palavras do Senhor existem as suas obras.
16 The sun illuminates and considers all things, and its work shows the fullness of the glory of the Lord.	16 O Sol contempla todas as coisas, que Ilumina; a glória do Senhor enche a sua obra.
17 Has not the Lord caused the holy ones to describe all his miracles, which the all-powerful Lord has firmly established in his glory?	17 Porventura não fez o Senhor que os Santos publicassem todas as suas maravilhas, as quais o mesmo Senhor omnipotente solidamente estabeleceu, para que subsistam para sua glória?
18 He has examined the abyss and the hearts of men. And he has considered their astuteness.	18 Ele sonda o abismo e o coração dos homens, e penetra os seus pensamentos mais subtis.
19 For the Lord comprehends all knowledge, and he has gazed upon the signs of the times: announcing the things of the past, as well as the things of the future, and revealing the traces of hidden things.	19 Realmente o Senhor conhece toda a ciência, contempla os sinais do tempo (que há-de vir), manifesta o passado e o futuro, descobre os rastos das coisas ocultas.
20 No thought passes by him unnoticed, and no word can conceal itself from him.	20 Não lhe escapa nenhum pensamento, não se esconde dele palavra alguma.
21 He has adorned the magnificent works of his wisdom. He is before eternity and even unto eternity. And nothing can be added,	21 Adornou as maravilhas da sua sabedoria. Existe antes dos séculos e para sempre. Nada se lhe pode acrescentar,
22 and nothing can be taken away. And he has no need of any counselor.	22 nem diminuir, nem necessita do conselho de ninguém.
23 O how desirable are all his works! And all that we consider is but a spark.	23 Quão amáveis são todas as suas obras! E todavia não podemos ver delas mais que uma centelha.
24 All these works exist, and they remain in the present age, and they all obey him in every purpose.	24 Todas estas coisas vivem e permanecem para sempre, e, em tudo o que é preciso, todas lhe obedecem.
25 All things are two-fold, one facing another, and he has not made anything to be lacking.	25 Todas as coisas se acham aos pares, uma oposta à outra; (Deus) nada fez que ficasse incompleto.
26 He has confirmed each thing as good. And who would tire of beholding his glory?	26 Confirmou os bens (ou as propriedades) de cada uma Quem se saciará de contemplar a sua glória?
