Because of need, many have sinned. And whoever seeks to be enriched, averts his eye.1 Beaucoup ont péché par amour du gain, celui qui veut s'enrichir se montre impitoyable.
Like a post fixed in the middle of adjoining stones, so also will sin become wedged between selling and buying.2 Un piquet s'enfonce entre deux pierres jointes, entre vente et achat une faute s'introduit.
Sin will be crushed with the one who sins.3 Qui ne s'attache pas fermement à la crainte du Seigneur, sa maison sera bientôt détruite.
If you do not hold yourself steadfastly to the fear of the Lord, your house will be quickly overthrown.4 Dans le crible qu'on secoue il reste des saletés, de même les défauts de l'homme dans sesdiscours.
Just as the dust remains when one shakes a sieve, so will the doubt of a man remain in his thoughts.5 Le four éprouve les vases du potier, l'épreuve de l'homme est dans sa conversation.
The furnace tests the potter’s vessels, and the trial of the tribulation tests just men.6 Le verger où croît l'arbre est jugé à ses fruits, ainsi la parole d'un homme fait connaître sessentiments.
As the pruning of a tree reveals its fruit, so does a word reveal the thoughts in the heart of a man.7 Ne loue personne avant qu'il n'ait parlé, car c'est là qu'est la pierre de touche.
You should not praise a man before he speaks; for such is the testing of men.8 Si tu poursuis la justice, tu l'atteindras, tu t'en revêtiras comme d'une robe d'apparat.
If you pursue justice, you will obtain it. And you will be clothed with justice, as with a long robe of honor. And you will live with justice. And justice will protect you continually. And on the day of reckoning, you will find a strong foundation.9 Les oiseaux cherchent la compagnie de leurs semblables, la vérité revient à ceux qui lapratiquent.
Birds flock to their own kind. And truth will return to those who practice it.10 Le lion guette sa proie, ainsi le péché guette ceux qui commettent l'injustice.
The lion lies in wait for its prey continually. So also do sins lie in wait for those who work iniquity.11 Le discours de l'homme pieux est toujours sagesse, mais l'insensé est changeant comme lalune.
A holy man persists in wisdom like the sun. But a senseless man changes like the moon.12 Pour aller chez les insensés, attends l'occasion, avec les gens réfléchis attarde-toi sanscrainte.
In the midst of the senseless, retain a word for the proper time. But be continually in the midst those who are thoughtful.13 Le discours des sots est une horreur, leur rire éclate dans les délices du péché.
The discussions of sinners are hateful, and their laughter is a delight in sin.14 Le langage de l'homme prodigue de serments fait dresser les cheveux, quand il se querelleon se bouche les oreilles.
The speech that swears many oaths will cause the hair of the head to stand upright; and its irreverence will cause the ears to be blocked.15 La querelle des orgueilleux fait couler le sang et leurs injures sont pénibles à entendre.
The shedding of blood is in the quarrels of the arrogant; and their evil talk is grievous to hear.16 Qui révèle les secrets perd son crédit et ne trouve plus d'ami selon son coeur.
Whoever discloses the secret of a friend breaks faith; and he will not find a friend for his soul.17 Envers ton ami sois affectueux et confiant, mais si tu as révélé ses secrets ne cours plusaprès lui;
Love your neighbor, and be united with him faithfully.18 car, comme on supprime un homme en le tuant, tu as tué l'amitié de ton prochain.
But if you disclose his secrets, you should not continue to follow after him.19 Comme on ouvre la main et l'oiseau s'envole, tu as perdu ton ami, tu ne le rattraperas pas.
For like a man who destroys his friend, so also is he who destroys the friendship of his neighbor.20 Ne le poursuis pas: il est loin, il s'est enfui comme la gazelle échappée au filet.
And like someone releasing a bird from his hand, so have you abandoned your neighbor, and you will not obtain him again.21 Car on panse une blessure, on pardonne une injure, mais pour qui a révélé un secret, plusd'espoir.
You should no longer seek him, for he is now far away; he has fled like a roe-deer from a snare. For his soul has been wounded.22 Qui cligne de l'oeil machine le mal, nul ne peut l'en détourner.
You will no longer be able to bind his wound. For there may be a reconciliation from cursing.23 En ta présence il est tout miel, il s'extasie devant tes propos; mais par derrière il change delangage et de tes paroles fait une pierre d'achoppement.
But to disclose the secrets of a friend is the hopeless act of an unhappy soul.24 Je hais bien des choses, mais rien tant que cet homme, et le Seigneur le hait aussi.
One who winks with the eye fabricates iniquity, and no one will cast him aside.25 Qui jette une pierre en l'air se la jette sur la tête, qui frappe en traître en subit le contrecoup.
In the sight of your eyes, he will sweeten his mouth, and he will admire your talk. But at the very end, he will pervert his mouth, and he will offer a scandal from your own words.26 Qui creuse une fosse y tombera, qui tend un piège s'y fera prendre.
I have hated many things, but I have not done as he has done, and the Lord will hate him.27 Qui fait le mal, le mal retombera sur lui, sans même qu'il sache d'où il lui vient.
Whoever throws a stone straight up will find that it falls on his own head. And a deceitful wound will return to wound the deceitful.28 Sarcasme et injure sont le fait de l'orgueilleux, mais la vengeance le guette comme un lion.
And whoever digs a pit will fall into it. And whoever positions a stone against his neighbor will stumble over it. And whoever lays a trap for another will perish by it.29 Ils seront pris au piège ceux que réjouit la chute des hommes pieux, la douleur lesconsumera avant leur mort.
Whoever sets in motion a wicked plan will find that it rolls back over him, and he will not know from which direction it will arrive.30 Rancune et colère, voilà encore des choses abominables qui sont le fait du pécheur.
Mockery and derision are of the arrogant, and vengeance will lie in wait for them, like a lion.
Whoever enjoys the fall of the just will perish in a snare, and grief will consume them before they die.
Anger and fury are both abominable, and the sinful man will be held by them.
