Wisdom 13

1 But all men are vain, who are not under the knowledge of God, and who, from these good things that are seen, were not able to understand he who is, nor, by paying attention to the works, did they acknowledge he who was the artisan.	1 Quelli uomini sono vani, nelli quali non è la scienza di Dio; e per avere le cose, le quali paiono buone, non poterono conoscere colui ch' è Iddio, nè attendendo all' opere poterono conoscere chi è l'artefice di esse.
2 Instead, they had considered either the fire, or the air, or the atmosphere, or the circle of stars, or the great sea, or the sun and moon, to be the gods that rule the world.	2 Ma elli pensarono che il fuoco, o spirito, o aere commosso, o giro di stelle, o molta acqua, o sole o luna, fussono rettori della terra e Iddii.
3 If they, being delighted by such sights, supposed them to be gods, let them know how great the Lord of them is in splendor. For he who created all things is the author of beauty.	3 E se costoru, per la bellezza delle cose che videro, pensorono che fussero Dei, sappiano quanto il signoreggiatore di queste cose è più nobile; il generatore della bellezza fece tutte queste cose.
4 Or, if they wondered at their power and their effects, let them understand by these things, that he who created them is mightier than they are.	4 E se loro si maravigliarono della virtude e dell' opere di quelle cose, intendano da quelle, però che colui che le fece è più forte d' esse.
5 For, by the greatness of the creation and its beauty, the creator of these will be able to be seen discernibly.	5 Conoscevolmente si potrà vedere il creatore (della grandezza) della bellezza e della creatura nella magnitudine d' essa bellezza nella creatura.
6 Yet, up to this point, the complaint about this is lesser. For perhaps they made a mistake in this, while desiring and seeking to find God.	6 Ma impertanto è ancora minore la lamentanza in queste; e costoro forse errano, che cercano Iddio, e vogliono trovare.
7 And, indeed, having some familiarity with him through his works, they search, and they are persuaded, because the things that they are seeing are good.	7 Però che (conciosia cosa che) loro conversino nelle sue opere, quando chieggono; e indotti sono a credere che quelle sono buone, che paiono buone.
8 But, then again, neither can their debt be ignored.	8 Nientemeno non si deve a costoro perdonare.
9 For, if they were able to know enough so that they could value the universe, how is it they did not easily discover the Lord of it?	9 Ma s' elli hanno tanto potuto sapere, ch' elli potessono stimare il secolo; or come non trovarono il Signore di questo più agevolmente?
10 Yet they are unhappy, and their hope is among the dead, for they have called ‘gods’ the works of the hands of men, gold and silver, the inventions of skill, and the likeness of animals, or a useless stone, the work of an ancient hand.	10 Elli sono disavventurati, e la loro speranza sì è tra li morti, coloro che appellarono iddii le opere delle mani delli uomini, cioè l' oro e l' argento, e le invenzioni delle arti, e le similitudini delli animali, disutile pietra o antica opera delle mani.
11 Or, it is as if a craftsman, a workman of the forest, had cut straight wood, and, with his expertise, shaved off all of its bark, and, with his skill, diligently fashioned a vessel, practical for use in life,	11 O sì come uno artefice di legname taglierae della selva uno diritto legno, e maestrevolmente ne leverae tutta la scorza, e usando l'arte sua diligentemente, ne farae uno vaso utile alla conservazione della vita;
12 and even the remains of his work were exhausted in the preparation of food;	12 e lo rimanente di questa opera si usi male, buttandola nel fuoco a preparare i cibi;
13 and, from the remainder of this, which has become useful for nothing, a curved piece of wood and full of knots, he diligently carves it in his spare time, and, through the knowledge of his art, forms it and makes it in the image of a man,	13 e lo rimanente di tutto questo, che non è utile ad alcuna cosa, che si è lo legno bistorto e pieno di groppi, intagli diligentemente per lo vòto d' esso, e per la maestria dell' arte sua il figuri e assomigli ad una imagine d' uomo,
14 or something comparable to an animal, thoroughly rubbing it with red ochre, to make it red with the color of the pigment, and to cover every imperfection which is in it;	14 o d'alcuno animale, imponendo con sinopia o con rosso liscio la faccia e il colore di quello, e con terra ricoprendo ogni magagna la qual sie in .quello.;
15 and it is as if he made a fitting resting place for it, even setting it in a wall and fastening it with iron,	15 e faccia a quello intaglio degna abitazione, proponendo quello nel parete, e fortificando con ferro,
16 providing for it, lest it should fall, knowing that it is unable to help itself, for it is an image and it is in need of help.	16 per ch' egli non caggia, tu guarderai quella imagine, sapendo ch' ella non si puote aiutare; però ch' ella è imagine, e ha bisogno d'aiutorio (d'uomo).
17 And then, making an offering, he inquires about his wealth, and about his sons, and about marriage. And he is not ashamed to talk to that which has no soul.	17 E della ricchezza sua e de' figliuoli suoi e delli matrimonii facendo voto, a lei dimanda (quello che li deve avvenire); e non si vergogna favellare con quella statua la quale è sanza anima,
18 And for health, indeed, something unhealthy is being prayed to, and for life, he petitions what is dead, and for help, he calls upon something helpless,	18 e a pregare lo infermo (e la statua inferma e debile) per la sanitade; priega il morto per la vita, e invoca il suo adiutorio disutile;
19 and for a good journey, he entreats that which is unable to walk, and for acquiring, and for working, and for success in all things, he entreats that which is useless in all things.	19 e per la via priega colui che non puote andare; e di guadagnare e d' adoperare e del fine di tutte le cose domanda colui il quale è disutile in tutte le cose.
