1 But all men are vain, who are not under the knowledge of God, and who, from these good things that are seen, were not able to understand he who is, nor, by paying attention to the works, did they acknowledge he who was the artisan.	1 Or vani sono tutti gli uomini, i quali non hanno cognizione di Dio; e dalle buone cose, che veggonsi non sono giunti a conoscere colui, che è, né dalla considerazione delle opere conobber chi fosse l'artefice:
2 Instead, they had considered either the fire, or the air, or the atmosphere, or the circle of stars, or the great sea, or the sun and moon, to be the gods that rule the world.	2 Ma dei, e rettori del mondo credettero essere o il fuoco, o il vento, o il mobil aere, o il coro delle stelle, o la massa delle acque, o il sole, o la luna.
3 If they, being delighted by such sights, supposed them to be gods, let them know how great the Lord of them is in splendor. For he who created all things is the author of beauty.	3 Che se rapiti dalla bellezza di tali cose ne fecero dei, comprender debbono quanto più bello di esse sia il loro Signore, mentre tutte queste cose dall'autore della bellezza furono fatte.
4 Or, if they wondered at their power and their effects, let them understand by these things, that he who created them is mightier than they are.	4 Se poi la virtù ammirarono, e gli effetti delle medesime cose, da queste debbon intendere, che colui, il qual le creò, in virtù le sorpassa:
5 For, by the greatness of the creation and its beauty, the creator of these will be able to be seen discernibly.	5 Imperocché dalla grandezza, e bellezza della creatura potrà intelligibilmente vedersi il lor Creatore:
6 Yet, up to this point, the complaint about this is lesser. For perhaps they made a mistake in this, while desiring and seeking to find God.	6 Eppure meno è da dolersi di questi. Perocché errano forse in cercando Dio, e bramando di ritrovarlo.
7 And, indeed, having some familiarity with him through his works, they search, and they are persuaded, because the things that they are seeing are good.	7 Conciossiaché lui cercano, investigando le opere sue, e ne rimangono presi, perché buone sono le cose, che veggonsi.
8 But, then again, neither can their debt be ignored.	8 Contuttociò neppur a questi si dee perdonare;
9 For, if they were able to know enough so that they could value the universe, how is it they did not easily discover the Lord of it?	9 Imperocché se poteron saperne tanto da penetrare le cose del mondo, come mai il Signore di esso non iscopersero più agevolmente?
10 Yet they are unhappy, and their hope is among the dead, for they have called ‘gods’ the works of the hands of men, gold and silver, the inventions of skill, and the likeness of animals, or a useless stone, the work of an ancient hand.	10 Ma sgraziatissimi sono, e la loro speranza hanno in cose morte coloro, che danno il nome di dei alle opere delle mani degli uomini, all'oro, all'argento lavorato con arte, e alle immagini di animali, o ad un vil sasso, opera di antica mano.
11 Or, it is as if a craftsman, a workman of the forest, had cut straight wood, and, with his expertise, shaved off all of its bark, and, with his skill, diligently fashioned a vessel, practical for use in life,	11 Come quando un legnaiuolo perito tronca una diritta pianta dal bosco, e con buon modo tutta ne rade la corteccia, e dell'arte sua ne forma un mobile atto a servire per le bisogne della vita,
12 and even the remains of his work were exhausted in the preparation of food;	12 E degli avanzi di tal lavoro ne fa uso per farsi da mangiare;
13 and, from the remainder of this, which has become useful for nothing, a curved piece of wood and full of knots, he diligently carves it in his spare time, and, through the knowledge of his art, forms it and makes it in the image of a man,	13 E un pezzo di questi non buono a farne nulla, bischenco, e pieno di nodi, a tempo avanzato lo lavora diligente mente collo scalpello, e secondo le regole dell'arte sua gli da figura, e lo fa simile all'immagine di un uomo,
14 or something comparable to an animal, thoroughly rubbing it with red ochre, to make it red with the color of the pigment, and to cover every imperfection which is in it;	14 Ovver gli di somiglianzà ad alcuno animale; e lo liscia col minio, e gli da color rosso col belletto, e lo pulisce da tutte le sue macchie,
15 and it is as if he made a fitting resting place for it, even setting it in a wall and fastening it with iron,	15 E degna stanza a lui prepara, e lo colloca alla muraglia, dove lo assicura col ferro,
16 providing for it, lest it should fall, knowing that it is unable to help itself, for it is an image and it is in need of help.	16 Affinchè non vada per terra, usando per esso tal diligenza, perché sa, ch'ei non può da se aitarsi, perché è un simolacro, ed ha bisogno di aiuto:
17 And then, making an offering, he inquires about his wealth, and about his sons, and about marriage. And he is not ashamed to talk to that which has no soul.	17 E a lui porge voti, e lo consulta intorno alle sue facoltà, e intorno a' figliuoli, e intorno ad un matrimonio; e non si vergogna di parlare con uno, che è senz'anima:
18 And for health, indeed, something unhealthy is being prayed to, and for life, he petitions what is dead, and for help, he calls upon something helpless,	18 E da un invalido chiede con suppliche la sanità, e da un morto la vita, e in suo aiuto invoca un impotente:
19 and for a good journey, he entreats that which is unable to walk, and for acquiring, and for working, and for success in all things, he entreats that which is useless in all things.	19 E per fare un viaggio si raccomanda a chi nop può muoversi, e per far degli acquisti, o qualche lavoro, e pel felice evento di qualsisia cosa, fa preghiere a chi non è buono a nulla.
