Proverbs 22

CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINJERUSALEM
A good name is better than many riches. And good esteem is above silver and gold.1 Le renom l'emporte sur de grandes richesses, la faveur, sur l'or et l'argent.
The rich and poor have met one another. The Lord is the maker of them both.2 Riche et pauvre se rencontrent, Yahvé les a faits tous les deux.
The clever saw evil and hid himself. The innocent continued on and was afflicted with damage.3 L'homme avisé voit le malheur et se cache, les niais passent outre, à leurs dépens.
The end of moderation is the fear of the Lord, riches and glory and life.4 Le fruit de l'humilité, c'est la crainte de Yahvé, la richesse, l'honneur et la vie.
Weapons and swords are on the way of the perverse. But he who guards his own soul withdraws far from them.5 Epines et pièges sur le chemin du pervers, qui tient à la vie s'en éloigne.
The proverb is: A youth is close to his way; even when he is old, he will not withdraw from it.6 Instruis le jeune homme selon ses dispositions, devenu vieux, il ne s'en détournera pas.
The rich rule over the poor. And the borrower is servant to the lender.7 Le riche domine les pauvres, du créancier l'emprunteur est esclave.
Whoever sows iniquity will reap evils, and by the rod of his own wrath he will be consumed.8 Qui sème l'injustice récolte le malheur et le bâton de sa colère disparaîtra.
Whoever is inclined to mercy shall be blessed, for from his bread he has given to the poor. Whoever gives gifts will acquire victory and honor. But he carries away the soul of the receiver.9 L'homme bienveillant sera béni, car il donne de son pain au pauvre.
Cast out the one who ridicules, and conflict will go out with him, and accusations and insults will cease.10 Chasse le railleur et la querelle cessera, procès et mépris s'apaiseront.
Whoever loves cleanness of heart, because of the grace of his lips, will have the king as his friend.11 Celui qui aime les coeurs purs, qui a la grâce sur les lèvres, a le roi pour ami.
The eyes of the Lord watch over knowledge. And the words of the iniquitous are supplanted.12 Les yeux de Yahvé protègent le savoir, mais il confond les discours du traître.
The lazy one says: “There is a lion outside. I might be slain in the midst of the streets.”13 Le paresseux dit: "Il y a un lion dehors! dans la rue je vais être tué!"
The mouth of a foreign woman is a deep pit; the Lord was angry with him who will fall into it.14 Fosse profonde, la bouche des étrangères: celui que Yahvé réprouve y tombe.
Foolishness has been bound to the heart of a child, and a rod of discipline shall cause it to flee.15 La folie est ancrée au coeur du jeune homme, le fouet de l'instruction l'en délivre.
Whoever slanders the poor, so as to augment his own riches, will give it away to one who is richer, and will be in need.16 Opprimer un pauvre, c'est l'enrichir, donner au riche, c'est l'appauvrir.
Incline your ear, and listen to the words of the wise. Then apply your heart to my doctrine.17 Prête l'oreille, entends les paroles des sages, à mon savoir applique ton coeur,
It shall be beautiful to you, if you preserve it in your inner self, and it shall overflow from your lips,18 car il y aura plaisir à les garder au-dedans de toi, à les avoir toutes assurées sur tes lèvres.
so that your confidence may be in the Lord. Therefore, I also have revealed it to you this day.19 Pour qu'en Yahvé soit ta confiance, je veux t'instruire aujourd'hui, toi aussi.
Behold, I have written it for you in three ways, and with meditations and knowledge,20 N'ai-je pas écrit pour toi 30 chapitres de conseils et de science,
so that I might reveal to you, firmly and with words of truth, in order to respond about these things to those who sent you.21 pour te faire connaître la certitude des paroles vraies et que tu rapportes des paroles sûres à quit'enverra?
Do not act with violence toward the pauper because he is poor. And do not weary the needy at the gate.22 Ne dépouille pas le faible, car il est faible, et n'opprime pas à la porte le pauvre,
For the Lord will judge his case, and he will pierce those who have pierced his soul.23 car Yahvé épouse leur querelle et ravit à leurs ravisseurs la vie.
Do not be willing to be a friend to an angry man, and do not walk with a furious man,24 Ne te lie pas avec un homme emporté, ne va pas avec un homme irascible,
lest perhaps you learn his ways, and take up a stumbling block to your soul.25 de peur que tu n'apprennes ses manières et n'y trouves un piège pour ta vie.
Do not be willing to be with those who certify with their hands, and who offer themselves as a guarantee against debts.26 Ne sois pas de ceux qui topent dans la main, qui se portent garants pour dettes;
For if you do not have the means to restore, what reason should there be for him to take the covering from your bed?27 si tu n'as pas de quoi t'acquitter, on prendra ton lit de dessous toi.
Do not cross beyond the ancient limits that your fathers have set.28 Ne déplace pas la borne antique que posèrent tes pères.
Have you seen a man swift in his work? He shall stand in the sight of kings, and not before those who are disreputable.29 Vois-tu un homme preste à sa besogne? Au service des rois il se tiendra, il ne se tiendra pas auservice des gens obscurs.
