Proverbs 19

CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
Better is the poor who walks in his simplicity, than the rich who twists his lips and is unwise.1 Better a poor man who walks in his integrity than he who is crooked in his ways and rich.
Where there is no knowledge of the soul, there is no good. And whoever hurries with his feet will stumble.2 Without knowledge even zeal is not good; and he who acts hastily, blunders.
The foolishness of a man undermines his steps. And then he seethes in his soul against God.3 A man's own folly upsets his way, but his heart is resentful against the LORD.
Riches adds many friends. But from the pauper, even those whom he had become separated.4 Wealth adds many friends, but the friend of the poor man deserts him.
A false witness shall not go unpunished. And whoever speaks lies will not escape.5 The false witness will not go unpunished, and he who utters lies will not escape.
Many honor the character of one who is powerful, and there are friends for a giver of gifts.6 Many curry favor with a noble; all are friends of the man who has something to give.
The brothers of the poor man hate him. Moreover, even his friends have withdrawn far from him. Whoever pursues only words shall have nothing.7 All the poor man's brothers hate him; how much more do his friends shun him!
But whoever possesses reason loves his own soul. And one who guards prudence shall discover good things.8 He who gains intelligence is his own best friend; he who keeps understanding will be successful.
A false witness shall not go unpunished. And whoever speaks lies will perish.9 The false witness will not go unpunished, and he who utters lies will perish.
Fine things are not fitting for the foolish, nor is it fitting for a servant to rule over princes.10 Luxury is not befitting a fool; much less should a slave rule over princes.
The doctrine of a man is known through patience. And his glory is to pass beyond iniquities.11 It is good sense in a man to be slow to anger, and it is his glory to overlook an offense.
Like the roaring of a lion, so also is the wrath of a king. And his cheerfulness is like the dew upon the grass.12 The king's wrath is like the roaring of a lion, but his favor, like dew on the grass.
A foolish son is the grief of his father. And an argumentative wife is like a roof that is continually leaking.13 The foolish son is ruin to his father, and the nagging of a wife is a persistent leak.
A house and its riches are given by parents. But a prudent wife is particularly from the Lord.14 Home and possessions are an inheritance from parents, but a prudent wife is from the LORD.
Laziness sends one into a deep sleep, and a dissolute soul will go hungry.15 Laziness plunges a man into deep sleep, and the sluggard must go hungry.
Whoever guards a commandment guards his own soul. But whoever neglects his own way will die.16 He who keeps the precept keeps his life, but the despiser of the word will die.
Whoever is merciful to the poor lends to the Lord. And he will repay him for his efforts.17 He who has compassion on the poor lends to the LORD, and he will repay him for his good deed.
Teach your son; do not despair. But do not set your soul toward putting him to death.18 Chastise your son, for in this there is hope; but do not desire his death.
Whoever is impatient will sustain damage. And when it has been taken away, he will set up another.19 The man of violent temper pays the penalty; even if you rescue him, you will have it to do again.
Listen to counsel and take up discipline, so that you may be wise in your latter days.20 Listen to counsel and receive instruction, that you may eventually become wise.
There are many intentions in the heart of a man. But the will of the Lord shall stand firm.21 Many are the plans in a man's heart, but it is the decision of the LORD that endures.
An indigent man is merciful. And a pauper is better than a deceitful man.22 From a man's greed comes his shame; rather be a poor man than a liar.
The fear of the Lord is unto life. And he shall linger in plentitude, without being visited by disaster.23 The fear of the LORD is an aid to life; one eats and sleeps without being visited by misfortune.
The lazy conceals his hand under his arm, and he will not so much as bring it to his mouth.24 The sluggard loses his hand in the dish; he will not even lift it to his mouth.
When the pestilent are scourged, the foolish will become wiser. But if you chastise the wise, he will understand discipline.25 If you beat an arrogant man, the simple learn a lesson; if you rebuke an intelligent man, he gains knowledge.
Whoever afflicts his father and flees from his mother is disreputable and unhappy.26 He who mistreats his father, or drives away his mother, is a worthless and disgraceful son.
Son, do not cease listening to doctrine, and do not be ignorant of the sermons of knowledge.27 If a son ceases to hear instruction, he wanders from words of knowledge.
An unjust witness ridicules judgment. And the mouth of the impious devours iniquity.28 An unprincipled witness perverts justice, and the mouth of the wicked pours out iniquity.
Judgments are prepared for those who ridicule. And striking hammers are prepared for the bodies of the foolish.29 Rods are prepared for the arrogant, and blows for the backs of fools.
