Proverbs 1

1 The parables of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel,	1 Parabole di Salomone figliuolo di David, re d'Israele.
2 in order to know wisdom and discipline,	2 Donde apparar la sapienza, e la disciplina,
3 to understand words of prudence, and to accept the instruction of doctrine, justice and judgment, and equity,	3 E intendere gli avvertimenti della prudenza, e abbracciare le istruzioni della dottrina, la giustizia, la rettitudine, e l'equità:
4 so as to give discernment to little ones, knowledge and understanding to adolescents.	4 Donde i piccoli si provveggano di sagacità, i giovinetti di sapere, e di intelligenza.
5 By listening, the wise shall become wiser and the intelligent shall possess governments.	5 Il saggio, che ascolterà, crescerà in sapienza, e colui, che intenderà, starà al timone:
6 He shall turn his soul to a parable and to its interpretation, to the words of the wise and their enigmas.	6 Comprenderà le parabole, e la loro interpretazione, le parole de' saggi, e i loro enimmi.
7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. The foolish despise wisdom as well as doctrine.	7 I timor del Signore egli o il principio della sapienza: la sapienza, e la dottrina è disprezzata dagli stolti.
8 Listen, my son, to the discipline of your father, and forsake not the law of your mother,	8 Ascolta, figliuol mio, i precetti del padre tuo, e non metter da banda le ammonizioni della tua madre:
9 so that grace may be added to your head and a collar to your neck.	9 Onde tu acquisti corona al tuo capo, e collana al tuo collo.
10 My son, if sinners should entice you, do not consent to them.	10 Figliuol mio, se i peccatori ti adescherrano, tu non fare a modo di coloro.
11 If they should say: “Come with us. We will lie in wait for blood. We will lay traps against the innocent, without cause.	11 S'ei diranno: Vieni con noi, insidieremo alla vita altrui, nasconderemo i lacci tesi a colui, che inutilmente è senza colpa:
12 Let us swallow him alive, like Hell, and whole, like one descending into the pit.	12 Lo ingoieremo vivo, come fa l'inferno, e tutto intero, come un che cade in un baratro.
13 We will discover every precious substance. We will fill our houses with spoils.	13 Troveremo ricchezze grandi d'ogni maniera, ed empieremo di spoglie le nostre case.
14 Cast your lot with us. One purse will be for us all.”	14 Unisci la sorte tua colla nostra, una sola borsa sarà tra tutti noi.
15 My son, do not walk with them. Preclude your feet from their paths.	15 Figliuol mio, non andar con costoro: tien lungi dalle vie loro i tuoi passi.
16 For their feet rush to evil, and they hurry to shed blood.	16 Perocché i loro piedi corrono al male, ed ei si affrettano a spargere il sangue;
17 But a net is thrown in vain before the eyes of those who have wings.	17 Ma indarno si tende la rete dinanzi agli occhi dei pennuti augelli:
18 Likewise, they lie in ambush against their own blood, and they undertake deceits against their own souls.	18 Costoro di più le insidie tendono alla propria lor vita, e le frodi macchinano contro le anime loro.
19 Thus, the ways of all those who are greedy seize the souls of those who possess.	19 Cosi le ruberie di tutti gli avari ruban le anime di quelli, che se le appropiano.
20 Wisdom forewarns far and wide; she bestows her voice in the streets.	20 La sapienza esce fuora cantando, alza la voce sua nelle piazze,
21 She cries out at the head of crowds; at the entrance of the gates of the city, she offers her words, saying:	21 Là, dove si aduna la moltitudine, ella si fa sentire, alle porte (della città) ella espone i suoi documenti, e dice:
22 “Little ones, how long will you choose to be childish, and how long will the foolish desire what is harmful to themselves, and how long will the imprudent hate knowledge?	22 Fino a quando, o fanciulli, amerete voi la fanciullaggine? e ameranno gli stolti quello, che ad essi nuoce? e gli imprudenti avranno in odio la scienza?
23 Be converted by my correction. Lo, I will offer my spirit to you, and I will reveal my words to you.	23 Volgetevi a udire le mie riprensioni: ecco che io vi comunicherò il mio spirito, e voi farò nota la mia dottrina.
24 For I called, and you refused. I extended my hand, and there was no one who watched.	24 Perché io chiamai, e voi non obbediste, stesi la mano, e nissun vi fece attenzione,
25 You have despised all my counsels, and you have neglected my rebukes.	25 Disprezzaste tutti i miei consigli, e poneste in non cale le mie riprensioni;
26 Similarly, I will ridicule you at your demise, and I will mock you, when that which you feared shall overcome you.	26 Io pure nella perdizione vostra riderò, e vi schernirò allora quando sopravverrà a voi quello, che temevate.
27 When sudden calamity rushes upon you, and your demise advances like a tempest, when tribulation and anguish overcome you,	27 Quando improvvisa sciagura vi investirà, e la morte, quasi turbine, vi sorprenderà; quando sopra di voi si getterà la tribolazione, e l'affanno.
28 then they will call to me, and I will not heed, they will arise in the morning, and not find me.	28 Allora costoro mi invocheranno, ed io non gli esaudirò, si alzeranno, solleciti, e non mi troveranno:
29 For they held hatred for discipline, and they would not accept the fear of the Lord;	29 Perocché ebbero in odio la disciplina, e non abbracciarono il timor del Signore.
30 they would not consent to my counsel, but they detracted from all of my corrections.	30 E non porser le orecchie aì miei consigli, e si fecer beffe di tutte le mie correzioni.
31 Therefore, they shall eat the fruit of their way, and they shall have their fill of their own counsels.	31 Mangeranno pertanto i frutti delle opere loro, e si satolleranno de' loro consiglj.
32 The loathing of the little ones shall destroy them, and the prosperity of the foolish shall perish them.	32 La indocilità di questi fanciulli sarà la loro morte, e la prosperità degli stolti li manderà in rovina.
33 But whoever will listen to me shall rest without terror, and shall have full enjoyment of abundance, without fear of evils.”	33 Ma chi ascolta me avrà riposo senza paure, e sarà nell'abbondanza scevro dal timore de' mali.
