Therefore, hear my speeches, Job, and listen to all my words.1 Toi donc, Job, entends mes arguments, sois attentif à toutes mes paroles.
Behold, I have opened my mouth; let my tongue speak along with my throat.2 J’ai commencé et je parle.
My words are from my simple heart, and my lips will speak a pure judgment.3 Ce sera pour dire des paroles de science, je ne dirai rien qui ne soit vrai.
The Spirit of God made me, and the breath of the Almighty gave me life.4 33:5 Réponds-moi donc si tu le peux; prépare tes arguments et donne la réplique.
If you can, answer me, and oppose me to my face.5 33:6 Devant Dieu je ne suis pas plus que toi, moi aussi j’ai été pétri d’argile;
Behold, God has made me, just as he also has made you, and I, likewise, have been formed of the same clay.6 33:4 fait par le souffle de Dieu, je suis vivant grâce à l’esprit du Puissant.
So, truly, do not let my wonders terrify you, and do not let my eloquence be burdensome to you.7 Tu n’as pas à craindre, comme avec sa terreur, tu ne sentiras pas le poids de ma main.
For you have spoken in my hearing, and I have heard the voice of your words, saying:8 Du as donc dit devant moi, et je l’ai bien entendu:
“I am clean and without sin; I am immaculate, and there is no iniquity in me.9 “Je suis innocent et sans fautes, je suis pur de tout crime.
Yet he has discovered blame in me, and so he has treated me like his enemy.10 C’est Dieu qui me cherche des prétextes et qui me traite en ennemi.
He has put my feet in fetters; he has kept watch over all my ways.”11 Il a mis des entraves à mes pieds, il surveille tous mes pas.”
Therefore, it is for this reason that you have not been justified. For I tell you that God is greater than man.12 Je te réponds: Tu as tort de parler ainsi, car Dieu est bien plus grand qu’un humain.
Do you contend against him because he has not responded to all of your words?13 Pourquoi lui fais-tu ce reproche qu’il laisse sans réponse toutes tes paroles?
God speaks once, and he does not repeat the same thing a second time.14 Car Dieu parle, mais il ne le répète pas deux fois.
Through a dream in a vision of the night, when a deep sleep falls over men, and they are sleeping in their beds,15 Ce peut être un rêve, une vision dans la nuit: tandis que l’homme repose sur sa couche, il tombe dans un état de torpeur,
then, he opens the ears of men, and, educating them, he teaches discipline,16 et Dieu alors parle à l’oreille des humains, il les effraie par des apparitions.
so that he may divert a man from the things that he is doing, and may free him from pride,17 Il veut arrêter l’homme dans son projet et le guérir de son orgueil.
rescuing his soul from corruption and his life from passing away by the sword.18 C’est ainsi qu’il épargne à son âme la tombe et l’empêche de descendre au séjour des morts.
Likewise, he rebukes by sorrow in bed, and he causes all of his bones to become weak.19 Il corrige aussi l’être humain par la douleur, quand il est en proie aux frissons de la fièvre:
Bread becomes abominable to him in his life, and, to his soul, the meat which before he desired.20 quand il prend en dégoût son pain, et perd tout son appétit;
His body will waste away, and his bones, which had been covered, will be revealed.21 quand il maigrit à vue d’œil, et déjà n’a plus que la peau sur les os;
His soul has approached corruption, and his life has drawn near to what is deadly.22 lorsque son âme approche de la fosse, et que sa vie aboutit au séjour des morts.
If there were an angel speaking for him, one among thousands, to declare the fairness of the man,23 Mais alors un ange se penche sur lui, un parmi des milliers, un de ceux qui rappellent aux humains leur devoir.
he will have mercy on him, and he will say, “Free him, so that he will not descend to destruction. I have found a reason to be favorable to him.24 Il prend pitié de lui et il implore: “Ne l’oblige pas à descendre dans la fosse, j’ai trouvé le moyen de racheter sa vie!”
His body is consumed by suffering. Let him return to the days of his youth.”25 Sa chair alors reprend vie: c’est une jeunesse! il revient aux jours de son adolescence;
He will beg pardon from God, and he will be soothing to him; and he will look upon his face in jubilation, and he will restore his justice to man.26 Il se tourne vers Dieu qui le prend en grâce, il va le visiter et fait éclater sa joie, proclamant aux humains la justice de Dieu.
He will consider mankind, and he will say: “I have sinned and truly I have offended, yet I was not treated as I deserved.”27 Il reconnaît devant les humains: “J’avais péché, commis l’injustice, et je n’en ai pas été puni.
He has freed his soul from continuing into destruction, so that, in living, it may see the light.28 Il m’a racheté, arraché à la fosse, et je vois encore la lumière!”
Behold, all these things God works three times within each one,29 Oui, voilà comment Dieu agit, deux fois, trois fois pour la même personne.
so that he may revive their souls from corruption and enlighten them with the light of life.30 C’est ainsi qu’il le ramène de la fosse, pour que brille sur lui la lumière des vivants.
Pay attention Job, and listen to me; and remain silent, while I speak.31 Sois donc attentif, Job, écoute-moi, tais-toi un peu, que je parle.
Yet, if you have anything to say, answer me and speak, for I want you to be treated justly.32 S’il y a quelque chose à redire, dis-le, parle, j’aimerais que tu aies raison.
But if you do not have anything to say, then listen to me. Be quiet and I will teach you wisdom.33 Sinon, tais-toi, écoute-moi, fais silence, que je t’enseigne la sagesse.
