1 And it happened that these words were heard by Judith, a widow who was the daughter of Merari, the son of Idox, the son of Joseph, the son of Oziel, the son of Elai, the son of Jamnor, the son of Gideon, the son of Raphaim, the son of Ahitub, the son of Melchiel, the son of Enan, the son of Nathaniel, the son of Salathiel, the son of Simeon, the son of Ruben.	1 E dopo questo addivenne che avendo udito queste parole Iudit vedova, la qual era figliuola di Merari, figliuolo di Idox, figliuolo di Iosef, figliuolo di Ozia, figliuolo di Elai, figliuolo di Iamnor, figliuolo di Gedeon, figliuolo di Rafaim, figliuolo di Achitob, figliuolo di Melchia, figliuolo di Enan, figliuolo di Natania, figliuolo di Salatiel, figliuolo di Simeon, figliuolo di Ruben;
2 And her husband was Manasseh, who died in the days of the barley harvest.	2 e lo marito di Iudit fu Manasse, lo qual morì nel tempo della mietitura dell' orzo;
3 For he was standing over those who bound sheaves in the field, and the heat overcame his head, and he died in Bethulia, his own city, and he was buried there with his fathers.	3 però ch' egli stava sopra quelli che ligavano li fasci nel campo, e il caldo li percosse lo capo, e per questo morissi nella sua città chiamata Betulia, e ivi fu seppellito con li padri suoi.
4 But Judith, his bereaved, was a widow now for three years and six months.	4 Ed era Iudit già stata vedova (e senza marito) tre anni e sei mesi.
5 And she made herself a private chamber in the upper part of her house, in which she stayed enclosed with her handmaids.	5 E nella parte di sopra della sua casa si fece una camera secreta, nella quale con le sue fanciulle sì stava chiusa.
6 And she had haircloth around her waist, and she fasted all the days of her life, except Sabbaths, and new moons, and the feasts of the house of Israel.	6 E avea sopra li suoi lombi lo cilicio, e digiunava tutti li dì della vita sua, fuori che li sabbati e li primi dì della luna e le feste della casa d' Israel.
7 Moreover, she was exceedingly elegant in appearance, and her husband left her many riches, and an abundant household, as well as the ownership of plentiful herds of oxen and flocks of sheep.	7 Ed era di uno troppo elegante aspetto, alla quale lo marito suo li avea lasciato molte ricchezze, e una grande famiglia, e (molte) possessioni piene di armenti di buoi e di greggie di pecore.
8 And she was greatly renowned among all, because she feared the Lord very much, nor was there anyone who spoke an ill word about her.	8 E questa era sopra tutti famosissima, però che temea molto Iddio, e non si trovava chi dicesse di lei una mala parola.
9 And so, when she heard that Uzziah had promised that he would hand over the city with the passing of five days, she sent to the elders Chabris and Charmis.	9 E avendo udilo (Iudit), che Ozia avea promesso che passato il quinto dì daria la città (allo esercito di Oloferne), mandò alli due principali della terra, cioè Cabri e Carmi.
10 And they came to her, and she said to them: “What is this word, by which Uzziah has consented to hand over the city to the Assyrians, if within five days no help arrives for us?	10 E vennero a lei, e disse loro: che cosa è questa, che ha consentito Ozia, di dar la città agli Assirii, se fra spazio di cinque di non verrà a voi adiutorio?
11 And who are you to test the Lord?	11 E chi siete voi, i quali tentate lo Signore Iddio?
12 This is not a word that will provoke mercy, but rather one that may excite wrath and enkindle fury.	12 Queste non sono le parole, le quali vi provocheranno la misericordia (di Dio), ma più tosto conciteranno contro a voi ira, e accenderanno lo furore (di Dio).
13 You have set a time limit for the mercy of the Lord, and you have established a day for him, according to your choice.	13 Voi vi avete posto il tempo della misericordia di Dio, e nel vostro arbitrio gli avete ordinato (e statuto) lo dì.
14 But, since the Lord is patient, let us be repentant about this same matter, and let us beg his indulgence with many tears.	14 Ma perchè Iddiò è paziente, in questo istesso pentiamoci, e dimandiamo perdonanza a lui con lacrime.
15 For God will not threaten like man, nor will he be inflamed to anger like a son of man.	15 Però che Iddio non si conduce come l' uomo, nè si infiammerà ad iracondia come lo figliuolo dell' uomo.
16 And, for this reason, let us humble our souls before him, and, continuing to serve him in a spirit of humility,	16 E però umiliamo l' anime nostre a lui, e nel spirito umiliato e contrito serviamo a lui.
17 let us speak to the Lord with tears, so that he may act according to his will in his mercy toward us. So then, just as our heart is disturbed by their arrogance, so also may we glory in our humility.	17 Diciamo piagnendo al Signore, che faccia secondo la sua volontade con noi la misericordia sua; che sì come il cuore nostro è conturbato nella superbia loro, così ci gloriamo della nostra umiltade.
18 For we have not followed the sins of our fathers, who abandoned their God in order to worship strange gods.	18 Però che noi non siamo seguitati i peccati de' nosiri padri, i quali abbandonarono il suo Dio, e adorarono i dii d'altri.
19 Because of this crime, they were given over to their enemies: to the sword, and to pillaging, and to confusion. But we know no other God except him.	19 Per lo qual peccato dati furono in uccisione e in rubamento e in confusione alli nemici loro; ma noi non sappiamo altro Iddio fuori che lui.
20 Let us wait with humility for his consolation, and the Lord our God will requite our blood by the afflictions of our enemies, and he will humble all the nations that will rise up against us, and he will cause them to be without honor.	20 Aspettiamo dunque umilmente la consolazione sua, e cercherà lo sangue nostro nelle afflizioni de' nostri nemici, e umilierà tutte le genti le quali si levano contro a noi, e faralle lo nostro Signore Dio sanza onore.
21 And now, brothers, because you are the elders among the people of God, and their very soul hangs upon you, rescue their hearts by your eloquence, so that they may remember that our fathers were tested in order to prove whether or not they truly worshiped their God.	21 E ora, fratelli, i quali siete li maggiori nel popolo di Dio, e da voi dipende l'anima loro, al parlare vostro dirizzate i cuori loro, acciò che si ricordino, che i padri nostri furono tentati, acciò che fossero provati se amavano il suo Iddio veramente.
22 They are obliged to remember how our father Abraham was tested, and being proved by many tribulations, he was made the friend of God.	22 Debbonsi ricordare, come il padre nostro Abraam fu tentato, e provato per molte tribolazioni fu fatto amico di Dio.
23 So Isaac, so Jacob, so Moses, and all that have pleased God, passed through many tribulations, remaining faithful.	23 Così Isaac, così Iacob, così Moisè, e tutti quelli i quali piacquero a Dio, per molte tribolazioni passarono fedeli.
24 But those who did not accept the trials with the fear of the Lord, and who brought forward their impatience and the disgrace of their murmuring against the Lord,	24 Ma quelli, li quali non riceverono le tentazioni con lo timore di Dio, e la impazienza sua e lo impeto della sua mormorazione proferirono contro a Dio,
25 were exterminated by the exterminator, and they perished by serpents.	25 furono esterminati dallo esterminatore, e perirono dalli serpenti.
26 And as for us, therefore, let us not revenge ourselves for these things that we suffer.	26 E noi non cerchiamo vendetta per quelle cose che noi siamo afflitti.
27 But, in considering these same sufferings to be less than our sins deserve, let us believe that the scourges of the Lord, by which we are corrected like servants, have occurred for our improvement and not for our destruction.”	27 Ma pensiamo questi esser piccoli supplizii per i peccati nostri, e crediamo che gli flagelli del Signore siano avvenuti a noi, come a servi suoi, per nostra emendazione, e non a nostra perdizione.
28 And Uzziah and the elders said to her: “All the things that you have spoken are true, and there is nothing reprehensible in your words.	28 E dissero a lei Ozia e quelli altri principali: tutte quelle cose che tu hai parlato sono vere, e nel tuo parlare non v'è reprensione alcuna.
29 Now, therefore, pray for us, because you are a holy woman, and one fearing God.”	29 Ora adunque priega per noi, però che tu sei una donna santa e che teme Iddio.
30 And Judith said to them: “You know that what I have been able to say is of God.	30 E disse loro Iudit: come voi conoscete esser da Dio quello ch' io ho potuto dire,
31 So, concerning that which I propose to do, examine whether or not it is from God, and pray that God may act to strengthen my plan.	31 così anco provate, quello ch' io ho deliberato di fare, se è da Dio; e pregate che Iddio facci il mio consiglio stabilire.
32 You will stand at the gate this night, and I will go forth with my handmaid. And pray that, just as you have said, within five days the Lord may look kindly on his people Israel.	32 Voi starete alla porta questa notte, e io uscirò con Abra mia serva; e pregate che così come voi avete detto, che in cinque dì Iddio abbi riguardo (e abbi rispetto) al suo popolo d'Israel.
33 But I am not willing to have you examine my actions, and, until I report to you, let nothing else be done, except to pray for me to the Lord our God.”	33 Ma io non voglio che voi sappiate quello ch' io mi voglio fare; e persino ch' io non vi dico altro, non si facci altro se non pregare per me al Signore Iddio nostro.
34 And Uzziah, the leader of Judah, said to her, “Go in peace, and may the Lord be with you to take revenge among our enemies.” So, turning back, they departed.	34 E disse a lei Ozia principe di Giuda: va in pace, e il Signore sia teco in vendetta delli nostri nemici. E partendosi se n'andarono.
