1 And it happened that these words were heard by Judith, a widow who was the daughter of Merari, the son of Idox, the son of Joseph, the son of Oziel, the son of Elai, the son of Jamnor, the son of Gideon, the son of Raphaim, the son of Ahitub, the son of Melchiel, the son of Enan, the son of Nathaniel, the son of Salathiel, the son of Simeon, the son of Ruben.	1 En aquellos días llegó todo esto a oídos de Judit, hija de Merarí, hijo de Ox, hijo de José, hijo de Oziel, hijo de Helcías, hijo de Ananías, hijo de Gedeón, hijo de Rafaín, hijo de Ajitob, hijo de Elías, hijo de Jilquías, hijo de Eliab, hijo de Natanael, hijo de Salamiel, hijo de Sarasadai, hijo de Israel.
2 And her husband was Manasseh, who died in the days of the barley harvest.	2 Su esposo Manasés, que era de su misma tribu y de su misma familia, había muerto durante la cosecha de la cebada:
3 For he was standing over those who bound sheaves in the field, and the heat overcame his head, and he died in Bethulia, his own city, and he was buried there with his fathers.	3 mientras vigilaba a los que ataban las gavillas en el campo, tuvo una insolación que lo postró en cama, y murió en Betulia, su ciudad. Allí fue sepultado con sus padres, en el campo que está situado entre Dotaim y Belamón.
4 But Judith, his bereaved, was a widow now for three years and six months.	4 Judit había permanecido viuda en su casa durante tres años y cuatro meses.
5 And she made herself a private chamber in the upper part of her house, in which she stayed enclosed with her handmaids.	5 Sobre la terraza de su casa se había hecho levantar una carpa; llevaba un sayal sobre su cuerpo y vestía ropas de luto.
6 And she had haircloth around her waist, and she fasted all the days of her life, except Sabbaths, and new moons, and the feasts of the house of Israel.	6 Ayunaba todos los días, excepto los sábados, los novilunios y los días de fiesta y de regocijo del pueblo de Israel.
7 Moreover, she was exceedingly elegant in appearance, and her husband left her many riches, and an abundant household, as well as the ownership of plentiful herds of oxen and flocks of sheep.	7 Era muy hermosa y de aspecto sumamente agradable. Su esposo Manasés le había dejado oro y plata, servidores y servidoras, ganados y campos, y ella había quedado como dueña de todo.
8 And she was greatly renowned among all, because she feared the Lord very much, nor was there anyone who spoke an ill word about her.	8 Nadie podía reprocharle nada, porque era muy temerosa de Dios.
9 And so, when she heard that Uzziah had promised that he would hand over the city with the passing of five days, she sent to the elders Chabris and Charmis.	9 Judit se enteró de las amargas quejas que el pueblo, descorazonado por la falta de agua, había dirigido al jefe de la ciudad. También se enteró de la respuesta que les había dado Ozías, cuando juró entregar la ciudad a los asirios en el término de cinco días.
10 And they came to her, and she said to them: “What is this word, by which Uzziah has consented to hand over the city to the Assyrians, if within five days no help arrives for us?	10 Envió entonces a la servidora que estaba al frente de todos sus bienes, para que llamara a Cabris y Carmis, ancianos de la ciudad.
11 And who are you to test the Lord?	11 Estos se presentaron, y ella les dijo: «Escúchenme, por favor, jefes de la población de Betulia. Ustedes se equivocaron hoy ante el pueblo, al jurar solemnemente que entregarían la ciudad a nuestros enemigos, si el Señor no viene a ayudarnos en el término fijado.
12 This is not a word that will provoke mercy, but rather one that may excite wrath and enkindle fury.	12 Al fin de cuentas, ¿quiénes son ustedes, para tentar así a Dios y usurpar su lugar entre los hombres?
13 You have set a time limit for the mercy of the Lord, and you have established a day for him, according to your choice.	13 ¡Ahora ustedes ponen a prueba al Señor todopoderoso, pero esto significa que nunca entenderán nada!
14 But, since the Lord is patient, let us be repentant about this same matter, and let us beg his indulgence with many tears.	14 Si ustedes son incapaces de escrutar las profundidades del corazón del hombre y de penetrar los razonamientos de su mente, ¿cómo pretenden sondear a Dios, que ha hecho todas estas cosas, y conocer su pensamiento o comprender sus designios? No, hermanos; cuídense de provocar la ira del Señor, nuestro Dios.
15 For God will not threaten like man, nor will he be inflamed to anger like a son of man.	15 Porque si él no quiere venir a ayudarnos en el término de cinco días, tiene poder para protegernos cuando él quiera o para destruirnos ante nuestros enemigos.
16 And, for this reason, let us humble our souls before him, and, continuing to serve him in a spirit of humility,	16 No exijan entonces garantías a los designios del Señor, nuestro Dios, porque Dios no cede a las amenazas como un hombre ni se le impone nada como a un mortal.
17 let us speak to the Lord with tears, so that he may act according to his will in his mercy toward us. So then, just as our heart is disturbed by their arrogance, so also may we glory in our humility.	17 Por lo tanto, invoquemos su ayuda, esperando pacientemente su salvación, y él nos escuchará si esa es su voluntad.
18 For we have not followed the sins of our fathers, who abandoned their God in order to worship strange gods.	18 Porque no hay nadie en nuestro tiempo, ni hay entre nosotros, en el día de hoy, tribu, ni familia, ni comarca, ni ciudad que adore dioses fabricados por mano de hombre, como sucedía en los tiempos pasados.
19 Because of this crime, they were given over to their enemies: to the sword, and to pillaging, and to confusion. But we know no other God except him.	19 A causa de eso, nuestros padres fueron entregados a la espada y a la depredación, y sucumbieron miserablemente delante de nuestros enemigos.
20 Let us wait with humility for his consolation, and the Lord our God will requite our blood by the afflictions of our enemies, and he will humble all the nations that will rise up against us, and he will cause them to be without honor.	20 Nosotros, en cambio, no reconocemos otro Dios fuera de él; por eso esperamos que no nos despreciará, ni a nosotros ni a ninguno de nuestra raza.
21 And now, brothers, because you are the elders among the people of God, and their very soul hangs upon you, rescue their hearts by your eloquence, so that they may remember that our fathers were tested in order to prove whether or not they truly worshiped their God.	21 Si nosotros nos rendimos, caerá toda la Judea y nuestro Santuario será saqueado. Entonces tendremos que responder con nuestra propia sangre por esa profanación.
22 They are obliged to remember how our father Abraham was tested, and being proved by many tribulations, he was made the friend of God.	22 Además, el Señor hará rezar sobre nuestra cabeza, en medio de las naciones donde estaremos cautivos, la matanza de nuestros hermanos, la deportación de la gente del país y la devastación de nuestra herencia; y seremos objeto de burla y escarnio por parte de nuestros conquistadores.
23 So Isaac, so Jacob, so Moses, and all that have pleased God, passed through many tribulations, remaining faithful.	23 Porque nuestra esclavitud no nos hará ganar la benevolencia de los vencedores, sino que el Señor, nuestro Dios, la convertirá en deshonra.
24 But those who did not accept the trials with the fear of the Lord, and who brought forward their impatience and the disgrace of their murmuring against the Lord,	24 Por eso, hermanos, demos un buen ejemplo a nuestros hermanos, ya que su vida depende de nosotros, y lo más sagrado que tenemos, el Templo y el altar, también dependen de nosotros.
25 were exterminated by the exterminator, and they perished by serpents.	25 Más aún, demos gracias al Señor, nuestro Dios, que nos somete a prueba, lo mismo que a nuestros padres.
26 And as for us, therefore, let us not revenge ourselves for these things that we suffer.	26 Recuerden todo lo que hizo con Abraham y en qué forma probó a Isaac, y todo lo que le sucedió a Jacob en Mesopotamia de Siria, cuando apacentaba las ovejas de Labán, hermano de su madre:
27 But, in considering these same sufferings to be less than our sins deserve, let us believe that the scourges of the Lord, by which we are corrected like servants, have occurred for our improvement and not for our destruction.”	27 así como a ellos los purificó para probar sus corazones, de la misma manera, nosotros no somos castigados por él, sino que el Señor golpea a los que están cerca de él, para que eso les sirva de advertencia».
28 And Uzziah and the elders said to her: “All the things that you have spoken are true, and there is nothing reprehensible in your words.	28 Ozías le respondió: «En todo lo que has dicho te has expresado con sensatez y nadie puede contradecir tus palabras.
29 Now, therefore, pray for us, because you are a holy woman, and one fearing God.”	29 No es esta la primera vez que se manifiesta tu sabiduría: desde que eras joven, todo el pueblo conoce tu inteligencia y la bondad de tu corazón.
30 And Judith said to them: “You know that what I have been able to say is of God.	30 Pero ahora el pueblo está consumido por la sed y nos ha obligado a ejecutar lo que le hemos propuesto y a comprometernos con un juramento que no nos es lícito violar.
31 So, concerning that which I propose to do, examine whether or not it is from God, and pray that God may act to strengthen my plan.	31 Tú, que eres una mujer piadosa, ruega por nosotros para que el Señor envíe la lluvia que llenará nuestras cisternas, y así no quedaremos exhaustos».
32 You will stand at the gate this night, and I will go forth with my handmaid. And pray that, just as you have said, within five days the Lord may look kindly on his people Israel.	32 Judit les respondió: «Escúchenme, porque voy a hacer algo que se transmitirá de generación en generación a los hijos de nuestra estirpe.
33 But I am not willing to have you examine my actions, and, until I report to you, let nothing else be done, except to pray for me to the Lord our God.”	33 Esta noche, ustedes se ubicarán ante la Puerta de la ciudad. Yo saldré con mi servidora, y antes del plazo fijado para entregar la ciudad a nuestros enemigos, el Señor, por mi intermedio, visitará a Israel.
34 And Uzziah, the leader of Judah, said to her, “Go in peace, and may the Lord be with you to take revenge among our enemies.” So, turning back, they departed.	34 No traten de averiguar lo que voy a hacer, porque no les diré nada hasta haber ejecutado mi proyecto.»
	35 Ozías y los jefes le dijeron: «Vete en paz, y que el Señor Dios vaya delante de ti para escarmiento de nuestros enemigos».
	36 Luego salieron de la carpa y regresaron a sus puestos.
