1 But when they had ceased speaking, it happened that Holofernes, being very indignant, said to Achior:	1 Or, lorsqu'ils eurent cessé de parler, Holoferne, transporté de fureur, dit à Achior:
2 “Because you have prophesied to us, saying that the people of Israel may be defended by their God, and so as to reveal to you that there is no God, except Nebuchadnezzar:	2 Parce que tu as fait le prophète, en nous disant que le peuple d'Israël sera défendu par son Dieu; pour que je te montre qu'il n'y a pas d'autre dieu que Nabuchodonosor,
3 when we will have struck them all as one man, then you also will pass away with them by the sword of the Assyrians, and all Israel will perish into perdition with you.	3 lorsque nous les aurons tous frappés comme un seul homme, alors tu périras toi-même avec eux par le fer des Assyriens, et tout Israël périra avec toi.
4 And you will be shown that Nebuchadnezzar is the lord of the whole earth. And then, the sword of my army will pass through your sides, and, being stabbed, you will fall among the wounded of Israel, and you will breathe no longer, when you have been destroyed with them.	4 Et tu connaîtras ainsi que Nabuchodonosor est le seigneur de toute la terre; et alors le glaive de mes soldats traversera tes chairs, et tu tomberas percé de coups parmi les blessés d'Israël, et tu n'en échapperas pas, mais tu périras avec eux.
5 And furthermore, if you consider your prophecy to be true, do not let your countenance fall, and let the paleness that has taken hold of your face depart from you, if you claim that these my words cannot be fulfilled.	5 Si tu crois que ta prophétie est véritable, que ton visage ne soit pas abattu, et que la pâleur dont il est couvert disparaisse de toi, si tu penses que mes paroles ne peuvent s'accomplir.
6 But so that you may know that you will experience these things together with them, behold, from this hour you will be associated with their people, so that, when they receive the punishment that they deserve from my sword, you will fall under the same vengeance.”	6 Et pour que tu saches que tu subiras ce sort avec eux, voici que, dès cette heure, tu seras joint à ce peuple, afin que, lorsque mon glaive leur fera souffrir la peine qu'ils méritent, tu sois soumis à la même vengeance.
7 Then Holofernes instructed his servants to apprehend Achior, and to lead him through to Bethulia, and to deliver him into the hands of the sons of Israel.	7 Alors Holoferne ordonna à ses serviteurs de prendre Achior, de le mener vers Béthulie, et de le livrer aux mains des fils d'Israël.
8 And, taking him, the servants of Holofernes traveled through the plains. But when they approached close to the mountains, the slingers of stones went forth against them.	8 Et les serviteurs d'Holoferne, s'étant saisis de lui, s'en allèrent dans la plaine; mais lorsqu'ils se furent approchés des montagnes, les frondeurs de la ville sortirent contre eux.
9 Then, diverting by the side of the mountain, they tied Achior, hands and feet, to a tree, and so they abandoned him, bound with ropes, and they returned to their lord.	9 Et eux, se détournant du côté de la montagne, lièrent Achior à un arbre par les mains et par les pieds; et l'ayant ainsi attaché avec des cordes, ils le laissèrent là, et revinrent vers leur maître.
10 Thereafter, the sons of Israel, descending from Bethulia, came to him. Releasing him, they brought him to Bethulia. And so, standing him in the midst of the people, they interrogated him as to what event caused the Assyrians to abandon him, bound.	10 Or les fils d'Israël, étant descendus de Béthulie, vinrent à lui, le délièrent et le conduisirent dans la ville, et, l'amenant au milieu du peuple, ils lui demandèrent pourquoi les Assyriens l'avaient abandonné lié de la sorte.
11 In those days, the rulers of that place were Uzziah, the son of Micah of the tribe of Simeon, and Chabris, also called Gothoniel.	11 En ce temps-là Ozias, fils de Micha, de la tribu de Siméon, et Charmi qui s'appelait aussi Gothoniel, étaient les chefs de Béthulie.
12 And so, in the midst of the elders and in the sight of everyone, Achior explained all that he had said in reply to the questioning of Holofernes, and in what manner the people of Holofernes wanted to have him killed because of this word,	12 Et Achior, au milieu des anciens et en présence de tous, raconta tout ce qu'il avait répondu à Holoferne lorsqu'il en avait été interrogé, et comment les gens d'Holoferne avaient voulu le tuer parce qu'il avait ainsi parlé,
13 and how Holofernes himself, being angry, had ordered him to be handed over to the Israelites, for this reason: so that when he would prevail over the sons of Israel, then he would also command Achior himself to be executed by diverse torments, because he had said that the God of heaven is their defender.	13 et comment Holoferne lui-même, irrité, avait commandé qu'on le livrât pour ce motif aux Israélites, afin qu'après avoir vaincu les fils d'Israël, il fît aussi mourir Achior de divers supplices, parce qu'il avait dit : Le Dieu du ciel est leur défenseur.
14 And when Achior had declared all these things, all the people fell on their faces, adoring the Lord, and, communing together with mourning and weeping, they poured out their prayers with one mind to the Lord,	14 Et lorsqu'Achior eut rapporté toutes ces choses, tout le peuple se prosterna le visage contre terre, adorant le Seigneur; et mêlant ensemble leurs lamentations et leurs pleurs, ils répandirent d'un même coeur leurs prières devant le Seigneur,
15 saying: “O Lord, God of heaven and earth, behold their arrogance, and gaze upon our humility, and attend to the face of your holy ones, and reveal that you do not abandon those who rely on you, and that those who rely on themselves and who glory in their own strength, you humble.”	15 en disant : Seigneur, Dieu du ciel et de la terre, contemplez leur orgueil, et voyez notre abaissement, et considérez la face de Vos saints, et faites voir que Vous n'abandonnez pas ceux qui présument de Votre bonté, et que Vous humiliez ceux qui présument d'eux-mêmes et se glorifient de leurs propres forces.
16 And so, when their weeping was ended, and the prayer of the people throughout the entire day was completed, they consoled Achior,	16 Après ces pleurs, et après la prière du peuple pendant tout le jour, ils consolèrent Achior,
17 saying: “The God of our fathers, whose power you have predicted, will give to you this in return: that you, instead, will see the destruction of them.	17 en disant : Le Dieu de nos pères, dont vous avez relevé la puissance, vous récompensera, et vous fera cette grâce de voir vous-même leur ruine.
18 Truly, when the Lord our God will give this freedom to his servants, may God also be with you in our midst, so that, just as it pleases you, everyone who is with you may keep company with us.”	18 Et lorsque le Seigneur notre Dieu aura mis ainsi Ses serviteurs en liberté, qu'il soit aussi votre Dieu au milieu de nous, afin que, selon qu'il vous plaira, vous viviez avec nous, vous et tous les vôtres.
19 Then Uzziah, after the council was ended, received him into his own house, and he made him a great supper.	19 L'assemblée étant finie, Ozias le reçut dans sa maison, et lui donna un grand festin.
20 And all the elders were invited; together they refreshed themselves at the completion of their fast.	20 Il avait invité tous les anciens, et, le jeûne étant terminé, ils prirent ensemble leur nourriture.
21 In truth, after this, all the people were called together, and they prayed throughout the entire night within the assembly, petitioning help from the God of Israel.	21 On réunit ensuite tout le peuple, et toute la nuit ils prièrent dans le lieu de leur assemblée, demandant du secours au Dieu d'Israël.
