1 Then Holofernes said to her: “Be steadfast in soul, and do not be terrified in your heart. For I have never harmed a man who was willing to serve king Nebuchadnezzar.	1 Alors Holoferne lui dit : Ayez bon courage, et n'ayez aucune crainte dans votre coeur, car je n'ai jamais fait de mal à quiconque a voulu servir le roi Nabuchodonosor.
2 But if your people had not despised me, I would not have lifted up my lance over them.	2 Si votre peuple ne m'avait pas méprisé, je n'aurais point levé ma lance contre lui.
3 But now, tell me, for what reason have you withdrawn from them, and why has it pleased you to come to us?”	3 Mais maintenant, dites-moi pour quoi vous les avez quittés, et pourquoi il vous a plu de venir vers nous.
4 And Judith said to him: “Receive the words of your maidservant. For, if you will follow the words of your maidservant, the Lord will accomplish an excellent thing by you.	4 Et Judith lui dit : Recevez les paroles de votre servante; car, si vous ajoutez foi à ce que votre servante vous dira, Dieu achèvera d'accomplir envers vous Ses desseins.
5 For, as Nebuchadnezzar the king of the earth lives, and as his power lives, which is with you for the chastising of all straying souls: not only men serve him through you, but also the beasts of the field are submissive to him.	5 Vive Nabuchodonosor, roi de la terre, et sa puissance qui est en vous pour châtier toutes les âmes égarées; car non seulement les hommes lui sont asservis par vous, mais même les bêtes des champs lui obéissent.
6 For the diligence of your mind is being reported to all nations, and it has been revealed to all of this age that you alone are good and powerful in all his kingdom, and your discipline is being announced beforehand in all the provinces.	6 Car la sagesse de votre esprit est célèbre dans toutes les nations, et le monde entier publie que vous êtes seul bon et puissant dans tout son royaume, et votre discipline militaire est louée dans toutes les provinces.
7 This is not hidden, what Achior has said, nor are we ignorant of what you have ordered to befall him.	7 On sait aussi ce qu'a dit Achior, et on n'ignore pas de quelle manière vous avez voulu qu'il fût traité.
8 For it is agreed that our God is so offended with sins that he has commanded, through his prophets to the people, that he will deliver them up for their sins.	8 Car il est certain que notre Dieu est tellement irrité par les péchés de Son peuple, qu'Il lui a fait dire par Ses prophètes qu'Il le livrerait à cause de ses offenses.
9 And since the sons of Israel know that they have offended their God, your trembling is upon them.	9 Et parce que les fils d'Israël savent qu'ils ont offensé leur Dieu, la terreur de vos armes les a saisis.
10 Moreover, now also a famine has assailed them, and, by drought of water, they are already counted among the dead.	10 De plus, la famine les a envahis, et le manque d'eau les fait déjà compter parmi les morts.
11 And finally, they have a plan to put to death their herds, and to drink their blood.	11 Ils ont même résolu de tuer leurs bestiaux, pour en boire le sang.
12 And the sacred things of the Lord their God, which God instructed them not to touch, among the grain, wine, and oil, these they have decided to expend, and they are willing to consume the things that they ought not to touch with their hands. Therefore, because they do these things, it is certain that they will be given over to perdition.	12 Et ayant du blé, du vin et de l'huile qui sont consacrés au Seigneur leur Dieu, et auxquels Dieu leur a défendu de toucher, ils sont résolus de les employer à leur usage, et ils veulent consumer des choses qu'il ne leur est pas même permis de toucher des mains. Puis donc qu'ils font cela, il est certain qu'ils seront livrés à la ruine.
13 And I, your maidservant, knowing this, have fled from them, and the Lord has sent me to report to you these same things.	13 Et moi, votre servante, connaissant cela, je me suis enfuie d'auprès d'eux; et le Seigneur m'a envoyée vous annoncer moi-même ces choses.
14 For I, your maidservant, worship God even now that I am with you, and your maidservant will go out, and I will pray to God.	14 Car votre servante adore son Dieu, même maintenant auprès de vous; et je sortirai, et je prierai Dieu,
15 And he will tell me when he will repay them for their sins, and I will return and announce it to you, so that I may bring you through the midst of Jerusalem, and you will hold all the people of Israel, like sheep that have no shepherd, and there will not be so much as one dog that barks against you.	15 et Il me dira quand Il les châtiera pour leurs péchés, et je viendrai vous l'annoncer, Je vous conduirai alors au milieu de Jérusalem, et tout le peuple d'Israël sera devant vous comme des brebis sans pasteur, et il n'y aura pas même un chien qui aboie contre vous,
16 For these things have been told to me through the providence of God.	16 car toutes ces choses m'ont été révélées par la providence de Dieu.
17 And because God has been angry with them, I have been sent to report these same things to you.”	17 Et parce que Dieu est irrité contre eux, Il m'a envoyée pour vous les annoncer.
18 And so, all these words were pleasing before Holofernes, and before his servants, and they wondered at her wisdom, and they said to one another:	18 Or toutes ces paroles plurent à Holoferne et à ses gens; et ils admiraient la sagesse de Judith, et ils se disaient l'un à l'autre:
19 “There is not another woman so great upon the earth: in appearance, in beauty, and in charming words.”	19 Il n'y a pas sur la terre une femme semblable à celle-ci pour l'aspect, la beauté, ou pour la sagesse des paroles.
20 And Holofernes said to her: “God has done well, who sent you ahead of the people, so that you may give them into our hands.	20 Alors Holoferne lui dit : Dieu a bien fait de vous envoyer devant ce peuple, pour nous le livrer entre les mains.
21 And if your promise is good, if your God will do this for me, he will also be my God, and you will be great in the house of Nebuchadnezzar, and your name will be renowned through all the earth.”	21 Et parce que vos promesses sont bonnes, si votre Dieu fait cela pour moi, il sera aussi mon Dieu; et vous serez grande dans la maison de Nabuchodonosor, et votre nom sera cité dans toute la terre.
