In the twelfth year of Ahaz, the king of Judah: Hoshea, the son of Elah, reigned over Israel, in Samaria, for nine years.1 L'anno duodecimo di Achaz re di Giuda, Osea figliuolo di Eia regnò sopra Israele in Samaria per nove anni.
And he did evil before the Lord, but not like the kings of Israel who had been before him.2 Ed ei fece il male nel cospetto del Signore, ma non come i re d'Israele suoi predecessori.
Shalmaneser, the king of the Assyrians, ascended against him. And Hoshea became a servant to him, and he paid him tribute.3 Contro di lui si mosse Salmanasarre degli Assiri, e Osea divenne suo vassallo, e gli pagava tributo.
And when the king of the Assyrians discovered that Hoshea, striving to rebel, had sent messengers to Sais, to the king of Egypt, so as not to present the tribute to the king of the Assyrians, as he had been accustomed to do each year, he besieged him. And having been bound, he cast him into prison.4 Ma avendo scoperto il re degli Assiri, come Osea tentando di ribellarsi avea mandati ambasciadori a Sua re dell'Egitto, per non pagare al re degli Assiri il tributo, che soleva dargli ogni anno, andò ad assediarlo, e presolo lo messe in prigione.
And he wandered through the entire land. And ascending to Samaria, he besieged it for three years.5 Egli fece scorrerie per tutto il paese, e accostatosi a Samaria, la assedio per tre anni.
And in the ninth year of Hoshea, the king of the Assyrians captured Samaria, and he carried away Israel to Assyria. And he stationed them in Halah and in Habor, beside the river of Gozan, in the cities of the Medes.6 E l'anno nono di Osea, il re degli Assiri prese Samaria, e trasportò gl'Israeliti nell' Assiria, e li collocò in Hala, e in Habor, città dei Medi presso al fiume Gozan.
For it happened that, when the sons of Israel had sinned against the Lord, their God, who had led them away from the land of Egypt, from the hand of Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, they worshipped strange gods.7 Imperocché i figliuoli d'Israele avean peccato contro il Signore Dio loro, il quale gli avea tratti dalla terra d'Egitto, dalle mani di Faraone re dell'Egitto, e aveano adorati gli dei stranieri.
And they walked according to the rituals of the nations that the Lord had consumed in the sight of the sons of Israel, and of the kings of Israel. For they had acted similarly.8 E aveano imitati i costumi delle genti distrutte dal Signore all'arrivo de' figliuoli d'Israele, e (i costumi) dei re d'Israele, che avean fatte le stesse cose.
And the sons of Israel offended the Lord, their God, with deeds that were not upright. And they built for themselves high places in all their cities, from the tower of the watchmen to the fortified city.9 E i figliuoli d'Israele avean disgustato il Signore Dio loro con azioni non rette: e si erano eretti de' luoghi eccelsi in tutte le loro città, dalle torri delle sentinelle fino alle città fortificate.
And they made for themselves statues and sacred groves, on every high hill and under every leafy tree.10 E si erano fatti de' boschetti, e si erano erette statue in ogni colle elevato, e sotto ogni pianta ombrosa.
And they were burning incense there, upon altars, in the manner of the nations that the Lord had removed from their face. And they did wicked deeds, provoking the Lord.11 Ed ivi bruciavano incensi sopra gli altari ad imitazione delle genti, le quali il Signore avea disperse alla loro venuta: e fecero cose iniquissime, provocando ad ira il Signore:
And they worshipped impurities, concerning which the Lord instructed them that they should not do this word.12 E adorarono le immondezze contro il divieto fatto loro dal Signore.
And the Lord testified to them, in Israel and in Judah, through the hand of all the prophets and seers, saying: “Return from your wicked ways, and keep my precepts and ceremonies, in accord with the entire law, which I instructed to your fathers, and just as I sent to you by the hand of my servants, the prophets.”13 E il Signore avea fatte le sue proteste ad Israele, e a Giuda per mezzo di tutti i profeti, e de' Veggenti, dicendo: Convertitevi dai pessimi vostri andamenti, e osservate i miei precetti, e le cerimonie a norma di tutte le leggi intimate da me a' padri vostri, e come ho mandato a dirvi pe' miei servi i profeti.
But they did not listen. Instead, they hardened their necks to be like the neck of their fathers, who were not willing to obey the Lord, their God.14 Eglino però non ascoltarono, ma indurarono la loro cervice imitando la durezza de' padri loro, i quali ubbidir non vollero al Signore loro Dio.
And they cast aside his ordinances, and the covenant that he formed with their fathers, and the testimonies which he testified to them. And they pursued vanities and acted vainly. And they followed the nations that were all around them, concerning the things which the Lord had commanded them not to do, and which they did.15 E rigettarono le sue leggi, e il patto fermato da lui co' padri loro, e gli avvertimenti fatti ad essi da lui, e andaron dietro alle vanità, e infatuirono, e imitarono le nazioni circonvicine, intorno alle quali il Signore avea loro ordinato di non fare quel che esse facevano.
And they abandoned all the precepts of the Lord, their God. And they made for themselves two molten calves and sacred groves. And they adored the entire celestial army. And they served Baal.16 E posero in non cale tutti i comandi del Signore Dio loro: e si fecero due vitelli di getto, e de' boschetti, e adorarono tutta la milizia del cielo, e rendettero onore a Baal,
And they consecrated their sons and their daughters through fire. And they devoted themselves to divinations and soothsaying. And they delivered themselves into the doing of evil before the Lord, so that they provoked him.17 E consagrarono i lor figliuoli, e le figlie per mezzo del fuoco; e si applicarono agl'indozzamenti, ed agli auguri: e si vendettero per fare ogni male dinanzi al Signore, provocandolo a sdegno.
And the Lord became vehemently angry with Israel, and he took them away from his sight. And there remained no one, except the tribe of Judah alone.18 E il Signore si adirò altamente contro Israele, e se lo tolse davanti, e non rimase se non la sola tribù di Giuda.
But even Judah did not keep the commandments of the Lord, their God. Instead, they walked in the errors of Israel, which they had wrought.19 Ma nemmeno lo stesso Giuda osservò i comandamenti del Signore Dio suo, ma imitò i traviamenti, ne' quali incorse Israele.
And the Lord cast aside all of the offspring of Israel. And he afflicted them, and he delivered them into the hand of despoilers, until he drove them away from his face,20 E Dio rigettò tutta la stirpe d'Israele, e li punì, e dielli in potere de' loro oppressori, sino a tanto che gli ebbe rigettati dal suo cospetto;
even from that time when Israel was torn away from the house of David, and they appointed for themselves Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, as king. For Jeroboam separated Israel from the Lord, and he caused them to sin a great sin.21 Fin da quel tempo, in cui Israele fece scissura dalla casa di Davidde, e si elesse per suo re Geroboam figliuolo di Nabath (perchè Geroboam separò Israele dal Signore, e lo indusse a commettere il gran peccato.)
And the sons of Israel walked in all the sins of Jeroboam, which he had done. And they did not withdraw from these,22 Imitarono i figliuoli d'Israele tutte le iniquità commesse da Geroboam, nè mai le abbandonarono,
even when the Lord carried away Israel from his face, just as he had said by the hand of all his servants, the prophets. And Israel was carried away from their land into Assyria, even to this day.23 Fino a tanto che il Signore si tolse dinanzi Israele, come avea predetto per mezzo di tutti i profeti suoi servi. E Israele fù trasportato dalla sua terra nell' Assiria, dov' è anche in oggi.
Then the king of the Assyrians brought some from Babylon, and from Cuthah, and from Avva, and from Hamath, and from Sepharvaim. And he located them in the cities of Samaria, in place of the sons of Israel. And they possessed Samaria, and they lived in its cities.24 E il re degli Assiri menò gente da Babilonia, e da Cutha, e da Avah, e da Ernath, e da Sepharvaim, e diede ad essi stanza nelle città della Samaria in luogo de' figliuoli d'Israele. E quelli possedettero la Samaria, e dimorarono in quelle città.
And when they had begun to live there, they did not fear the Lord. And the Lord sent lions among them, which were killing them.25 E quando cominciarono a dimorarvi, non temevano il Signore; e il Signore mandò contro di loro dei leoni, i quali gli uccidevano.
And this was reported to the king of the Assyrians, and it was said: “The peoples that you transferred and caused to live in the cities of Samaria, they are ignorant of the ordinances of the God of the land. And so the Lord has sent lions among them. And behold, they have killed them, because they were ignorant of the rituals of the God of the land.”26 E ne fu portata la nuova al re de gli Assiri, e gli fu detto: Le genti, che tu hai trasportate ad abitare le città della Samaria, non han cognizione del culto del Dio di quel paese; e il Signore ha mandato contro di loro dei leoni, i quali gli uccidono, perchè ei non sanno i riti del Dio del paese.
Then the king of the Assyrians commanded, saying: “Lead to that place one of the priests, whom you brought as a captive from there. And let him go and live with them. And let him teach them the ordinances of the God of the land.”27 E il re degli Assiri comandò, e disse: Si meni colà uno dei sacerdoti, che sono stati di là condotti in ischiavitù, ed egli vada a stare con quegli, e insegni loro il culto del Dio del paese.
And so, when one of the priests, who had been led away captive from Samaria, had arrived, he lived in Bethel. And he taught them how they should worship the Lord.28 Essendo adunque andato uno de' sacerdoti condotti schiavi dalla Samaria, abitò a Bethel, e insegnava a coloro la maniera di onorare il Signore.
And each of the nations made gods of their own, and they placed them in the shrines of the high places, which the Samaritans had made: nation after nation, in their cities in which they were living.29 Ma ciascheduna nazione si formò il suo Dio, e li collocarono negli adoratori eccelsi eretti dai Samaritani: ogni nazione (ebbe il suo) in ogni città da lei abitata.
So the men of Babylon made Soccoth-benoth; and the men of Cuth made Nergal; and the men of Hamath made Ashima;30 Perocché i Babilonesi fecero i Socoth-benoth, e i Cutei, Nergel, e quelli di Emath fecero Asima.
and the Avvites made Nibhaz and Tartak. Then those who were from Sepharvaim burned up their children with fire, for the gods of Sepharvaim: Adram-melech and Anam-melech.31 E gli Hevei fecero Nebahaz, e Tharthac: e quei di Sepharvaim bruciavano i lor figliuoli in onore di Adramelech, e di Anamelech dei di Sepharvaim.
But nevertheless, they worshipped the Lord. Then they made for themselves, from the least of the people, priests of the high places. And they placed them in the shrines of the high places.32 E con tutto questo adoravano il Signore. E della gente più vile crearono sacerdoti de' luoghi eccelsi, e li collocavano negli alti adoratori.
And though they worshipped the Lord, they also served their own gods, according to the custom of the nations from which they had been transferred into Samaria.33 E adorando il Signore, servivano insieme a' loro dei secondo il costume delle genti, donde erano stati trasportati a Samaria:
Even to the present day, they follow the ancient customs; they do not fear the Lord, and they do not keep his ceremonies, and judgments, and law, and commandment, which the Lord had instructed to the sons of Jacob, whom he named Israel.34 Ei perseverano sino al dì d'oggi nell' antico costume: non temono il Signore, e non osservano le sue cerimonie, e i riti, e le leggi, e i comandamenti intimati dal Signore a' figliuoli di Giacobbe, cui egli diede il soprannome d'Israele:
And he had struck a covenant with them, and he had commanded them, saying: “You shall not fear foreign gods, and you shall not adore them, and you shall not worship them, and you shall not sacrifice to them.35 Con essi aveva egli fermato il patto, e avea lor comandato: Non temete gli dei stranieri, e non gli adorate, e non rendete loro culto veruno, né offerite loro sacrifizi:
But the Lord, your God, who led you away from the land of Egypt, with great strength and with an outstretched arm, him shall you fear, and him shall you adore, and to him shall you sacrifice.36 Ma il Signore Dio vostro, il quale vi ha tratti dalla terra d'Egitto con possanza grande, e colla forza del suo braccio, lui temete, lui adorate, e a lui offerite sagrifizi.
Also, the ceremonies, and judgments, and law, and commandment, which he wrote for you, you shall keep so that you do them for all days. And you shall not fear strange gods.37 E osservate, e adempite costantemente le cerimonie, e i riti, e la legge, e i comandamenti dati a voi per iscritto: e non temete gli dei stranieri:
And the covenant, which he struck with you, you shall not forget; neither shall you worship strange gods.38 E non ponete in dimenticanza il patto, che egli fermò con voi; e non rendete culto agli dei stranieri,
But you shall fear the Lord, your God. And he will rescue you from the hand of all your enemies.”39 Ma temete il Signore Dio vostro; ed ei vi libererà dalle mani di tutti i vostri nemici.
Yet truly, they did not listen to this. Instead, they acted in accord with their earlier custom.40 Quelli però non dieder retta, ma secondo l'antico loro costume operarono.
And such were these nations: to some extent fearing the Lord, yet nevertheless also serving their idols. As for their sons and grandsons, just as their fathers acted, so also did they act, even to the present day.41 Queste genti pertanto renderon culto al Signore, ma con tutto questo servirono anche agli idoli loro; imperocché quello, che fecero i padri loro, lo hanno fatto i loro figliuoli, e i nipoti sino al dì d'oggi.
