CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINDIODATI
In the twelfth year of Ahaz, the king of Judah: Hoshea, the son of Elah, reigned over Israel, in Samaria, for nine years.1 L’ANNO duodecimo di Achaz, re di Giuda, Osea, figliuolo di Ela, cominciò a regnare sopra Israele, in Samaria; e regnò nove anni.
And he did evil before the Lord, but not like the kings of Israel who had been before him.2 E fece quello che dispiace al Signore; non però come gli altri re d’Israele, che erano stati davanti a lui.
Shalmaneser, the king of the Assyrians, ascended against him. And Hoshea became a servant to him, and he paid him tribute.3 Salmaneser, re degli Assiri, salì contro a lui; ed Osea gli fu fatto soggetto, e gli pagava tributo.
And when the king of the Assyrians discovered that Hoshea, striving to rebel, had sent messengers to Sais, to the king of Egypt, so as not to present the tribute to the king of the Assyrians, as he had been accustomed to do each year, he besieged him. And having been bound, he cast him into prison.4 Ma il re degli Assiri scoperse una congiura in Osea; perciocchè egli avea mandati ambasciatori a So, re d’Egitto, e non avea pagato il tributo annuale al re degli Assiri; laonde il re degli Assiri lo serrò, e lo mise ne’ ceppi in carcere.
And he wandered through the entire land. And ascending to Samaria, he besieged it for three years.5 E il re degli Assiri salì per tutto il paese, e venne in Samaria, e vi tenne l’assedio tre anni.
And in the ninth year of Hoshea, the king of the Assyrians captured Samaria, and he carried away Israel to Assyria. And he stationed them in Halah and in Habor, beside the river of Gozan, in the cities of the Medes.6 L’anno nono di Osea, il re degli Assiri prese Samaria, e menò gl’Israeliti in cattività in Assiria; e li fece abitare in Hala, ed in Habor, presso al fiume Gozan, e nelle città di Media
For it happened that, when the sons of Israel had sinned against the Lord, their God, who had led them away from the land of Egypt, from the hand of Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, they worshipped strange gods.7 Or questo avvenne, perciocchè i figliuoli d’Israele aveano peccato contro al Signore Iddio loro, il quale li avea tratti fuor del paese di Egitto, di sotto alla mano di Faraone, re di Egitto; ed aveano riveriti altri dii;
And they walked according to the rituals of the nations that the Lord had consumed in the sight of the sons of Israel, and of the kings of Israel. For they had acted similarly.8 ed erano camminati negli statuti delle genti, le quali il Signore avea scacciate d’innanzi a loro, e negli statuti che i re d’Israele aveano fatti;
And the sons of Israel offended the Lord, their God, with deeds that were not upright. And they built for themselves high places in all their cities, from the tower of the watchmen to the fortified city.9 ed aveano copertamente fatte cose che non erano diritte inverso il Signore Iddio loro, e si aveano edificati degli alti luoghi in tutte le lor città, dalle torri delle guardie, fino alle città forti;
And they made for themselves statues and sacred groves, on every high hill and under every leafy tree.10 e si aveano rizzate statue, e boschi, sopra ogni alto colle, e sotto ogni albero verdeggiante.
And they were burning incense there, upon altars, in the manner of the nations that the Lord had removed from their face. And they did wicked deeds, provoking the Lord.11 E quivi aveano fatti profumi in ogni alto luogo, come le genti che il Signore avea trasportate via d’innanzi a loro; ed aveano fatte cose malvage, per dispettare il Signore;
And they worshipped impurities, concerning which the Lord instructed them that they should not do this word.12 ed aveano servito agl’idoli, de’ quali il Signore avea lor detto: Non fate ciò.
And the Lord testified to them, in Israel and in Judah, through the hand of all the prophets and seers, saying: “Return from your wicked ways, and keep my precepts and ceremonies, in accord with the entire law, which I instructed to your fathers, and just as I sent to you by the hand of my servants, the prophets.”13 E benchè il Signore avesse protestato ad Israele, ed a Giuda, per tutti i suoi profeti, e per tutti i veggenti, dicendo: Convertitevi dalle vostre vie malvage, ed osservate i miei comandamenti ed i miei statuti, seguendo tutta la Legge, la quale io ho comandata a’ padri vostri, e la quale io vi ho comandata per li profeti, miei servitori;
But they did not listen. Instead, they hardened their necks to be like the neck of their fathers, who were not willing to obey the Lord, their God.14 non però aveano ubbidito; anzi aveano indurato il lor collo, come i padri loro, che non aveano creduto al Signore Iddio loro;
And they cast aside his ordinances, and the covenant that he formed with their fathers, and the testimonies which he testified to them. And they pursued vanities and acted vainly. And they followed the nations that were all around them, concerning the things which the Lord had commanded them not to do, and which they did.15 ed aveano sprezzati i suoi statuti, e il suo patto, il quale egli avea contratto coi lor padri; e le protestazioni ch’egli avea fatte a loro stessi; ed erano camminati dietro alla vanità, onde si erano invaniti; e dietro alle genti ch’erano d’intorno a loro, delle quali il Signore avea lor comandato, che non facessero come esse;
And they abandoned all the precepts of the Lord, their God. And they made for themselves two molten calves and sacred groves. And they adored the entire celestial army. And they served Baal.16 ed aveano lasciati tutti i comandamenti del Signore Iddio loro, e si aveano fatti due vitelli di getto, e de’ boschi; ed aveano adorato tutto l’esercito del cielo, ed aveano servito a Baal;
And they consecrated their sons and their daughters through fire. And they devoted themselves to divinations and soothsaying. And they delivered themselves into the doing of evil before the Lord, so that they provoked him.17 ed aveano fatti passare i lor figliuoli, e le lor figliuole, per lo fuoco; ed aveano atteso a indovinamenti, e ad augurii; e si erano venduti a far ciò che dispiace al Signore, per dispettarlo.
And the Lord became vehemently angry with Israel, and he took them away from his sight. And there remained no one, except the tribe of Judah alone.18 Perciò, il Signore si adirò grandemente contro ad Israele, e li rimosse dal suo cospetto, e non vi restò, se non la tribù di Giuda sola.
But even Judah did not keep the commandments of the Lord, their God. Instead, they walked in the errors of Israel, which they had wrought.19 Ma anche Giuda non osservò i comandamenti del Signore Iddio suo; anzi camminò negli statuti di que’ d’Israele, ch’essi aveano fatti.
And the Lord cast aside all of the offspring of Israel. And he afflicted them, and he delivered them into the hand of despoilers, until he drove them away from his face,20 Perciò, il Signore sdegnò tutta la progenie d’Israele, e li afflisse, e li diede in mano di predatori, finchè li ebbe cacciati via dal suo cospetto.
even from that time when Israel was torn away from the house of David, and they appointed for themselves Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, as king. For Jeroboam separated Israel from the Lord, and he caused them to sin a great sin.21 Perciocchè, dopo ch’egli ebbe stracciato Israele d’addosso alla casa di Davide, e ch’essi ebbero costituito re Geroboamo, figliuolo di Nebat, Geroboamo sviò Israele di dietro al Signore, e gli fece commettere un gran peccato.
And the sons of Israel walked in all the sins of Jeroboam, which he had done. And they did not withdraw from these,22 Ed i figliuoli d’Israele camminarono in tutti i peccati che Geroboamo avea commessi, e non se ne rivolsero;
even when the Lord carried away Israel from his face, just as he had said by the hand of all his servants, the prophets. And Israel was carried away from their land into Assyria, even to this day.23 intanto che il Signore tolse via Israele dal suo cospetto, siccome ne avea parlato per tutti i profeti, suoi servitori; ed Israele fu menato in cattività d’in su la sua terra in Assiria, ove è stato infino ad oggi
Then the king of the Assyrians brought some from Babylon, and from Cuthah, and from Avva, and from Hamath, and from Sepharvaim. And he located them in the cities of Samaria, in place of the sons of Israel.
And when they had begun to live there, they did not fear the Lord. And the Lord sent lions among them, which were killing them.25 Or da prima che cominciarono ad abitar quivi, quelle genti non riverivano il Signore; laonde il Signore mandò contro a loro de’ leoni, i quali uccidevano molti di loro.
And this was reported to the king of the Assyrians, and it was said: “The peoples that you transferred and caused to live in the cities of Samaria, they are ignorant of the ordinances of the God of the land. And so the Lord has sent lions among them. And behold, they have killed them, because they were ignorant of the rituals of the God of the land.”26 Ed egli fu detto al re degli Assiri: Le genti che tu hai tramutate, e fatte abitare nelle città di Samaria, non sanno le leggi dell’Iddio del paese; laonde egli ha mandato contro a loro de’ leoni che le uccidono; perciocchè non sanno le leggi dell’Iddio del paese.
Then the king of the Assyrians commanded, saying: “Lead to that place one of the priests, whom you brought as a captive from there. And let him go and live with them. And let him teach them the ordinances of the God of the land.”27 Allora il re degli Assiri comandò, e disse: Fatevi andare uno dei sacerdoti che ne avete menati in cattività; a vadasi, ed abitisi là, e quel sacerdote insegni a quelli che vi andranno le leggi dell’Iddio del paese.
And so, when one of the priests, who had been led away captive from Samaria, had arrived, he lived in Bethel. And he taught them how they should worship the Lord.28 Così uno dei sacerdoti, ch’erano stati menati in cattività di Samaria, venne, ed abitò in Betel, ed insegnò a coloro in qual maniera doveano riverire il Signore.
And each of the nations made gods of their own, and they placed them in the shrines of the high places, which the Samaritans had made: nation after nation, in their cities in which they were living.29 Nondimeno ciascuna di quelle genti si faceva i suoi dii, e li misero nelle case degli alti luoghi, che i Samaritani aveano fatti; ciascuna nazione li mise nelle sue città, dove abitava.
So the men of Babylon made Soccoth-benoth; and the men of Cuth made Nergal; and the men of Hamath made Ashima;30 Ed i Babiloni fecero Succot-benot, e i Cutei Nergal, e gli Hamatei Asima;
and the Avvites made Nibhaz and Tartak. Then those who were from Sepharvaim burned up their children with fire, for the gods of Sepharvaim: Adram-melech and Anam-melech.31 e gli Avvei fecero Nibhaz e Tartac; ed i Sefarvei bruciavano i lor figliuoli col fuoco ad Adrammelec e ad Anammelec, dii di Sefarvaim.
But nevertheless, they worshipped the Lord. Then they made for themselves, from the least of the people, priests of the high places. And they placed them in the shrines of the high places.32 E anche riverivano il Signore; e si fecero de’ sacerdoti degli alti luoghi, presi di qua e di là d’infra loro, i quali facevano i lor sacrificii nelle case degli alti luoghi.
And though they worshipped the Lord, they also served their own gods, according to the custom of the nations from which they had been transferred into Samaria.33 Essi riverivano il Signore, e insieme servivano a’ lor dii, secondo la maniera delle genti, d’infra le quali erano stati trasportati là.
Even to the present day, they follow the ancient customs; they do not fear the Lord, and they do not keep his ceremonies, and judgments, and law, and commandment, which the Lord had instructed to the sons of Jacob, whom he named Israel.34 Infino a questo giorno essi fanno secondo i lor costumi antichi; essi non riveriscono il Signore, e non fanno nè secondo i loro statuti e costumi, nè secondo la legge e i comandamenti che il Signore ha dati a’ figliuoli di Giacobbe, al quale pose nome Israele;
And he had struck a covenant with them, and he had commanded them, saying: “You shall not fear foreign gods, and you shall not adore them, and you shall not worship them, and you shall not sacrifice to them.35 co’ quali il Signore avea fatto patto, e a’ quali avea comandato, e detto: Non riverite altri dii e non li adorate, e non servite, nè sacrificate loro;
But the Lord, your God, who led you away from the land of Egypt, with great strength and with an outstretched arm, him shall you fear, and him shall you adore, and to him shall you sacrifice.36 anzi riverite il Signore, il quale vi ha tratti fuor del paese di Egitto, con gran forza, e con braccio steso; esso adorate, ed a lui sacrificate.
Also, the ceremonies, and judgments, and law, and commandment, which he wrote for you, you shall keep so that you do them for all days. And you shall not fear strange gods.37 Ed osservate di mettere sempre in opera gli statuti, e gli ordinamenti, e la Legge, e i comandamenti, ch’egli vi ha scritti; e non riverite altri dii.
And the covenant, which he struck with you, you shall not forget; neither shall you worship strange gods.38 E non dimenticate il patto che io ho fatto con voi; e non riverite altri dii.
But you shall fear the Lord, your God. And he will rescue you from the hand of all your enemies.”39 Ma riverite il Signore Iddio vostro; ed egli vi libererà da tutti i vostri nemici.
Yet truly, they did not listen to this. Instead, they acted in accord with their earlier custom.40 Ma essi non ubbidirono; anzi fecero secondo il loro costume antico.
And such were these nations: to some extent fearing the Lord, yet nevertheless also serving their idols. As for their sons and grandsons, just as their fathers acted, so also did they act, even to the present day.41 Così quelle genti riverivano il Signore, e insieme servivano alle loro sculture. I lor figliuoli anch’essi, e i figliuoli de’ lor figliuoli fanno, infino ad oggi, come fecero i lor padri
