1 And so David, having reviewed his people, appointed over them tribunes and centurions.	1 Davide, tendo feito resenha da sua gente, nomeou sobre ela chefes de milhar e chefes de centena.
2 And he placed a third part of the people under the hand of Joab, and a third part under the hand of Abishai, the son of Zeruiah, the brother of Joab, and a third part under the hand of Ittai, who was from Gath. And the king said to the people, “I, too, will go forth with you.”	2 Pôs um terço das suas tropas sob o mando de Joab, outro terço sob o mando de Abisai, filho de Sarvia irmão de Joab, e outro terço sob o mando de Etai de Get. O rei disse ao povo: Eu sairei também convosco.
3 And the people responded: “You shall not go out. For if we flee, there will not be great concern in them for us. Or if one half part of us will fall, they will not care much. For you are considered as one for ten thousand. Therefore, it is better that you should be in the city to strengthen us.”	3 Todavia o povo respondeu: Não sairás, porque, ainda que os inimigos nos ponham em fuga, não terão isto por uma grande coisa; mesmo que morra metade de nós, não lhes dará isso maior cuidado. Tu, porém és considerado como dez mil. Logo é melhor que fiques na cidade para nos socorrer.
4 And the king said to them, “I will do whatever seems good to you.” Therefore, the king stood beside the gate. And the people went out by their troops, by hundreds and by thousands.	4 O rei disse-lhes: Farei o que vos parecer bem. E pôs-se o rei junto à porta (da cidade), e o povo Ia desfilando, formado em esquadrões de cem e de mil homens.
5 And the king ordered Joab and Abishai and Ittai, saying, “Preserve for me the boy Absalom.” And all the people heard the king commanding all the leaders on behalf of Absalom.	5 O rei deu esta ordem a Joab, a Abisai e a Etai: Poupai-me o meu filho Absalão. E todo o povo ouviu a ordem que o rei dava a todos os seus generais em favor de Absalão.
6 And so, the people departed into the field against Israel. And the battle took place in the forest of Ephraim.	6 Saiu, enfim , o povo à campanha contra Israel, e deu-se a batalha no bosque de Efraim
7 And the people of Israel were cut down in that place by the army of David. And a great slaughter occurred on that day: twenty thousand men.	7 Ali o povo de Israel foi derrotado pelo exército de Davide, e naquele dia houve um a grande mortandade de vinte mil homens.
8 Now the battle in that place was dispersed over the face of all the land. And there were many more of the people whom the forest had consumed, than the sword had devoured, on that day.	8 O combate estendeu-se sobre a superfície de toda aquela terra, e foram muito mais os que pereceram (fugindo) pelo bosque, do que aqueles que pereceram à espada.
9 Then it happened that Absalom, riding on a mule, met the servants of David. And when the mule had entered under a thick and large oak tree, his head became trapped in the oak. And while he was suspended between heaven and earth, the mule on which he had been sitting continued on.	9 Ora aconteceu que, indo Absalão montado num macho, se encontrou com a gente de Davide. Tendo entrado o macho por baixo dum frondoso e grande carvalho, enredou-se a cabeleira (de Absalão) nos ramos do carvalho; pasando adiante o macho em que la montado, ficou ele pendurado entre o céu e a terra.
10 Then a certain one saw this and reported it to Joab, saying, “I saw Absalom hanging from an oak.”	10 Vendo isto um homem, avisou Joab, dizendo: Eu vi Absalão pendurado dum carvalho.
11 And Joab said to the man who had reported it to him, “If you saw him, why did you not stab him to the ground, and I would have given you ten shekels of silver and a belt?”	11 Joab disse ao homem que lhe dava esta notícia: Se o viste, por que o não abateste? Eu dar-te-ia dez siclos de prata e um cinto.
12 And he said to Joab: “Even if you weighed out to my hands one thousand silver coins, I would never lay my hands on the son of the king. For in our hearing the king ordered you and Abishai and Ittai, saying, ‘Keep for me the boy Absalom.’	12 Ele respondeu a Joab: Ainda que pusesses nas minhas mãos mil siclos de prata, de nenhuma sorte estenderia minha mão contra o filho do rei, porque todos nós ouvimos a ordem que o rei deu a ti, a Abisai, e a Etai, quando disse: Poupai-me o meu filho Absalão.
13 Then too, if I had acted with such audacity, against my own life, this would never have been able to be hidden from the king. And would you then have stood by my side?”	13 Se eu, com risco da minha vida, tivesse procedido tão temerariamente, de nenhum modo isto se poderia ocultar ao rei; e tu mesmo opor-te-ias (ao rei, defendendo-me)?
14 And Joab said, “It will not be as you wish. Instead, I will be assailing him in your sight.” Then he took three lances in his hand, and he fixed them in the heart of Absalom. And while he was still clinging to life upon the oak,	14 Joab disse: Não será o que dizes, mas à tua vista o matarei. Tomou, pois, na mão três langas, e traspassou com elas o coração de Absalão. Quando ele ainda palpitava pendurado no carvalho,
15 ten young men, armor bearers of Joab, ran up, and striking him, they killed him.	15 correram dez jovens escudeiros de Joab, que, a golpes, o acabaram de matar.
16 Then Joab sounded the trumpet, and he held back the people, lest they pursue Israel in their flight, for he was willing to spare the multitude.	16 Joab tocou a trombeta, e, querendo poupar a multidão (dos vencidos). Impediu que a sua gente fosse no alcance dos Israelitas que fugiram.
17 And they took Absalom, and they threw him into a great pit in the forest. And they piled an exceedingly great heap of stones over him. But all of Israel fled to their own tents.	17 Tomaram Absalão, lançaram-no numa grande cova no bosque, e arremessaram sobre ele um grandíssimo montão de pedras. Todos os Israelitas fugiram para as suas tendas.
18 Now Absalom had raised up for himself, when he was still alive, a monument, which is in the Valley of the King. For he said, “I have no son, and so this shall be the memorial to my name.” And he called the monument by his own name. And it is called the Hand of Absalom, even to this day.	18 Absalão, quando ainda vivia, tinha feito levantar para si um monumento no vale do Rei, porque tinha dito: Eu (já) não tenho filhos, e este será uma memória do meu nome. E deu o seu nome a este monumento, o qual ainda hoje se chama a Mão de Absalão.
19 Then Ahimaaz, the son of Zadok, said, “I will run and report to the king that the Lord has accomplished judgment for him, from the hand of his enemies.”	19 Aquimaas, filho de Sadoc, disse: Deixa-me correr a levar ao rei a boa notícia de que o Senhor lhe fez justiça (libertando-o) do poder de seus inimigos.
20 And Joab said to him: “You shall not be the messenger on this day. Instead, you shall report on another day. I am not willing for you to give the report today, because the son of the king is dead.”	20 Joab disse-lhe: Não lhe levarás hoje a notícia, mas outro dia; não quero que lha leves hoje, porque morreu o filho do rei.
21 Then Joab said to Hushai, “Go, and report to the king what you have seen.” Hushai reverenced Joab, and he ran.	21 Joab disse a um cusita: Parte e vai anunciar ao rei o que viste. Ele fez-lhe uma profunda reverência e partiu a correr.
22 And Ahimaaz, the son of Zadok, said to Joab again, “What prevents me from running after Hushai also?” And Joab said to him: “Why do you want to run, my son? You would not be the bearer of good news.”	22 Aquimaas, filho de Sadoc, disse novamente a Joab: Que embaraço há para que eu não vá também correndo atrás do cusita? Joab respondeu-lhe: Por que queres tu correr, ó meu filho? Esta mensagem não te aproveitaria.
23 And he responded, “But what if I do run?” And he said to him, “Run.” Then Ahimaaz, running along a shorter way, passed Hushai.	23 (Aquimaas) respondeu: Seja o que for, eu correrei. Joab disse-lhe: Corre. Correndo, pois, Aquimaas por um atalho, passou adiante do cusita.
24 Now David was sitting between the two gates. Truly, the watchman, who was at the summit of the gate upon the wall, lifting up his eyes, saw a man running alone.	24 Davide estava sentado entre as duas portas. A sentinela que estava por cima da porta, sobre a muralha, levantando os olhos, viu vir um homem correndo sozinho e gritou para advertir o rei. O rei respondeu: Se vem só, traz alguma boa nova. Entretanto, apressando-se ele e estando já próximo,
25 And crying out, he told the king. And the king said, “If he is alone, there is good news in his mouth.” But as he was advancing and drawing nearer,	25 .
26 the watchman saw another man running. And so, crying out from the height, he said: “Another man has appeared, running alone.” And the king said, “This one also is a good messenger.”	26 a sentinela descobriu outro homem que corria, e, gritando de cima, disse: Eu vejo lá vir correndo outro homem só. O rei disse: Também este traz alguma boa nova.
27 Then the watchman said, “The running of the closest one seems like the running of Ahimaaz, the son of Zadok.” And the king said, “He is a good man, and he arrives bearing good news.”	27 A sentinela disse: Observo que o modo de correr do primeiro me parece ser o correr de Aquimaas, filho de Sadoc. O rei disse: É um homem de bem, e vem (certamente) trazer boas novas.
28 Then, Ahimaaz, crying out, said to the king, “Be well, O king.” And reverencing the king prone on the ground before him, he said, “Blessed be the Lord your God, who has enclosed the men who had lifted up their hands against my lord the king.”	28 Aquimaas, gritando, disse ao rei: Vitória! E, prostrado em terra, diante do rei, e fazendo-lhe uma profunda reverência; disse: Bem-dito seja o Senhor, teu Deus, que destroçou os homens que se tinham sublevado contra o rei, meu senhor.
29 And the king said, “Is there peace for the boy Absalom?” And Ahimaaz said: “I saw a great tumult, O king, when your servant Joab sent me, your servant. I know nothing else.”	29 O rei disse: Está vivo o meu filho Absalão? Aquimaas respondeu-lhe: Quando o teu servo Joab me enviou a ti, que (também) sou teu servo, ó rei, eu vi um grande tumulto; não sei mais nada.
30 And the king said to him, “Pass, and stand here.” And when he had passed and stood still,	30 O rei disse-lhe: Afasta-te e espera aí. Tendo ele passado e estando no seu lugar,
31 Hushai appeared. And approaching, he said: “I bear good news, my lord the king. For today the Lord has judged for you, from the hand of all who had risen up against you.”	31 chegou o cusita que disse: Ó rei, meu senhor, trago-te um a boa nova, porque o Senhor julgou hoje em teu favor, libertando-te da mão de todos aqueles que se sublevaram contra ti.
32 But the king said to Hushai, “Is there peace for the boy Absalom?” And responding, Hushai said to him, “May the enemies of my lord the king, and all who rise against him for evil, be as the boy is.”	32 O rei disse ao cusita: Está vivo o meu filho Absalão? Cusi, respondendo-lhe, disse: Assim suceda aos inimigos do rei, meu senhor, e a todos os que se sublevam contra ele para o perderem, como sucedeu àquele jovem.
33 And so the king, being greatly saddened, ascended to the upper room of the gate, and he wept. And as he went, he was speaking in this manner: “My son Absalom! Absalom my son! Who can grant to me that I may die on your behalf? Absalom, my son! My son, Absalom!”	33 Então o rei, cheio de tristeza subiu ao quarto, que estava por cima da porta, e pôs-se a chorar. E, andando, dizia assim: Meu filho Absalão! Absalão, filho meu! Quem me dera ter morrido por ti, Absalão, meu filho, filho meu, Absalão.
