1 About this time, God said to Jacob, “Arise and go up to Bethel, and live there, and make an altar to God, who appeared to you when you fled from your brother Esau.”	1 Da gebot Gott dem Jakob: »Mache dich auf, ziehe nach Bethel hinauf, nimm dort deinen Wohnsitz und errichte dort einen Altar für den Gott, der dir erschienen ist, als du vor deinem Bruder Esau flohst!«
2 In truth, Jacob, having called together all his house, said: “Cast away the foreign gods that are in your midst and be cleansed, and also change your garments.	2 Da befahl Jakob seiner Familie und allen anderen, die bei ihm waren: »Schafft die fremden Götter weg, die ihr bei euch habt, reinigt euch und legt andere Kleider an!
3 Arise, and let us go up to Bethel, so that we may make an altar there to God, who heeded me in the day of my tribulation, and who accompanied me on my journey.”	3 Wir wollen aufbrechen und nach Bethel hinaufziehen: dort will ich einen Altar errichten dem Gott, der mich zur Zeit meiner Not erhört hat und auf dem Wege, den ich gezogen bin, mit mir gewesen ist.«
4 Therefore, they gave him all the foreign gods which they had, and the earrings which were in their ears. And then he buried them under the terebinth tree, which is beyond the city of Shechem.	4 Darauf übergaben sie dem Jakob alle fremden Götter, die in ihrem Besitz waren, und ebenso ihre Ohrringe, und Jakob vergrub sie unter der Terebinthe, die bei Sichem steht.
5 And when they had set out, the terror of God invaded all the surrounding cities, and they dared not pursue them as they withdrew.	5 Als sie dann aufbrachen, fiel ein Schrecken Gottes auf die Ortschaften der ganzen Umgegend, so daß sie die Söhne Jakobs nicht verfolgten.
6 And so, Jacob arrived at Luz, which is in the land of Canaan, also named Bethel: he and all the people with him.	6 So kam denn Jakob nach Lus, das im Lande Kanaan liegt – das ist Bethel –, er samt allen Leuten, die sich bei ihm befanden.
7 And he built an altar there, and he called the name of that place, ‘House of God.’ For there God appeared to him when he fled from his brother.	7 Er baute dort einen Altar und nannte die Stätte ›der Gott von Bethel‹, weil Gott sich ihm dort geoffenbart hatte, als er vor seinem Bruder floh.
8 About the same time, Deborah, the nurse of Rebekah, died, and she was buried at the base of Bethel, under an oak tree. And the name of that place was called, ‘Oak of Weeping.’	8 Damals starb Debora, die Amme der Rebekka, und wurde unterhalb Bethels unter der Eiche begraben, die seitdem die ›Klageeiche‹ heißt.
9 Then God appeared again to Jacob, after he returned from Mesopotamia of Syria, and he blessed him,	9 Da erschien Gott dem Jakob zum zweitenmal seit seiner Rückkehr aus Nord-Mesopotamien und segnete ihn;
10 saying: “You will no longer be called Jacob, for your name shall be Israel.” And he called him Israel,	10 und Gott sagte zu ihm: »Dein Name ist Jakob; aber künftig sollst du nicht mehr Jakob heißen, sondern ›Israel‹ soll dein Name sein«; so gab er ihm den Namen Israel (32,29).
11 and he said to him: “I am Almighty God: increase and multiply. Tribes and peoples of nations will be from you, and kings will go forth from your loins.	11 Weiter sagte Gott zu ihm: »Ich bin der allmächtige Gott; sei fruchtbar und mehre dich! Ein Volk, ja eine ganze Menge (oder: Schar, Gemeinde) von Völkern soll aus dir werden (oder: von dir stammen), und Könige sollen unter deinen leiblichen Nachkommen sein.
12 And the land that I gave to Abraham and Isaac, I will give to you, and to your offspring after you.”	12 Und das Land, das ich Abraham und Isaak gegeben habe, will ich dir geben und es auch deiner Nachkommenschaft nach dir verleihen.«
13 And he withdrew from him.	13 Hierauf fuhr Gott von ihm in die Höhe empor an der Stätte, wo er mit ihm geredet hatte.
14 In truth, he set up a monument of stone, in the place where God had spoken to him, pouring out libations over it, and pouring oil,	14 Da errichtete Jakob einen Denkstein an der Stätte, wo er mit ihm geredet hatte, ein Denkmal von Stein, und goß ein Trankopfer auf dasselbe aus und begoß es mit Öl.
15 and he called the name of that place, ‘Bethel.’	15 Und Jakob nannte die Stätte, wo Gott mit ihm geredet hatte, ›Bethel‹ (d.h. Haus Gottes).
16 Then, departing from there, he arrived in springtime at the land that leads to Ephrath. And there, when Rachel was giving birth,	16 Hierauf zogen sie von Bethel weiter; und als sie nur noch eine Strecke Weges bis nach Ephrath zu gehen hatten, wurde Rahel von Geburtswehen befallen und hatte eine schwere Niederkunft.
17 because it was a difficult birth, she began to be in danger. And the midwife said to her, “Do not be afraid, for you will have this son also.”	17 Als sie nun bei der Geburt schwer zu leiden hatte, sagte die Wehmutter zu ihr: »Laß dir nicht bange sein! Denn du wirst auch diesmal einen Sohn haben.«
18 Then, when her life was departing because of the pain, and death was now imminent, she called the name of her son Benoni, that is, the son of my pain. Yet truly, his father called him Benjamin, that is, the son of the right hand.	18 Als ihr dann aber die Seele (= das Leben) entfloh – denn sie mußte sterben –, nannte sie ihn ›Benoni‹ (d.h. mein Schmerzenskind oder: Unglückssohn), sein Vater aber nannte ihn ›Benjamin‹ (d.h. Glückssohn).
19 And so Rachel died, and she was buried in the way that leads to Ephrath: this place is Bethlehem.	19 So starb Rahel und wurde auf dem Wege nach Ephrath, das jetzt Bethlehem heißt, begraben.
20 And Jacob erected a monument over her sepulcher. This is the monument to Rachel’s tomb, even to the present day.	20 Jakob errichtete dann einen Denkstein auf ihrem Grabe; das ist der Denkstein, der auf dem Grabe Rahels noch heute steht.
21 Departing from there, he pitched his tent beyond the Tower of the Flock.	21 Hierauf zog Israel weiter und schlug sein Zelt jenseits von Migdal-Eder (d.h. Herdenturm) auf.
22 And when he was living in that region, Reuben went out, and he slept with Bilhah the concubine of his father, which was not such a small matter as to be hidden from him. Now the sons of Jacob were twelve.	22 Während nun Israel sich in jener Gegend aufhielt, ging Ruben hin und verging sich mit Bilha, dem Nebenweibe seines Vaters; und Israel erfuhr es.– Jakob hatte aber zwölf Söhne.
23 The sons of Leah: Reuben the first born, and Simeon, and Levi, and Judah, and Issachar, and Zebulun.	23 Die Söhne der Lea waren: Ruben, der Erstgeborene Jakobs, ferner Simeon, Levi, Juda, Issaschar und Sebulon.
24 The sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin.	24 Die Söhne der Rahel waren: Joseph und Benjamin.
25 The sons of Bilhah, handmaid of Rachel: Dan and Naphtali.	25 Die Söhne der Bilha, der Leibmagd Rahels, waren: Dan und Naphthali,
26 The sons of Zilpah, handmaid of Leah: Gad and Asher. These are the sons of Jacob, who were born to him in Mesopotamia of Syria.	26 und die Söhne der Silpa, der Leibmagd Leas, waren: Gad und Asser. Dies sind die Söhne Jakobs, die ihm in Nord-Mesopotamien geboren worden waren.
27 And then he went to his father Isaac in Mamre, the city of Arba: this place is Hebron, where Abraham and Isaac sojourned.	27 Jakob kam dann zu seinem Vater Isaak nach Mamre, der Stadt Arbas, das ist Hebron, woselbst Abraham und Isaak als Fremdlinge gewohnt hatten.
28 And the days of Isaac were completed: one hundred and eighty years.	28 Isaak brachte aber sein Leben auf hundertundachtzig Jahre;
29 And being consumed by old age, he died. And he was placed with his people, being old and full of days. And his sons, Esau and Jacob, buried him.	29 da verschied Isaak und starb und wurde zu seinen Stammesgenossen versammelt, alt und lebenssatt; und seine Söhne Esau und Jakob begruben ihn.
